1956 Martin 000-28, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
1956 Martin 000-28: gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood, fresh setup, voice wide open like the summer sky. We love getting vintage Martin pieces in like this 000, since it affords us the opportunity to compare newer guitars against their vintage predecessors. The breathy, opened up character waiting under the strings of this 000-28 is something to experience firsthand; the graceful string-to-string balance dovetails with a sweet spot setup for both flatpicks and fingertips.
The Sitka Spruce top has patinaed to a handsome amber, and the V neck carve feels familiar as an old friend’s embrace. Our repair team has just gone over this guitar from tailblock to tuners and given it a clean bill of health! This is a lovely opportunity to snag a piece of true vintage for yourself, our 1956 Martin 000-28. If you dig in a bit, this beauty sings out loud and clear; this ain’t the preacher’s daughter.

For this guitar, we have to go back all the way to 1890, when Franz Sulzner ordered a custom 1-26 from the Martin guitar factory. Documented on page 85 of Philip F. Gura’s “C.F. Martin and His Guitars,” this 1-26 appears with a note explaining Sulzner’s connection with the Martin business. This was to be a size 1 guitar, the largest that Martin built in the nineteenth century (“ladies guitars” and smaller came as 2s, 3s, and so on).
While a standard 26 style in many ways, this guitar was customized in the factory per Sulzner’s requests to include an Ivory-bound fretboard and fret markers. The Ivory bindings and “half herringbone” top trim are standard to the 26 style, but to our knowledge no others 26-style guitars from this period feature Ivory bindings across both the body and fretboard. Of course the friction tuning pegs are also Ivory, and the back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood. Adirondack Spruce on top.
Suffice it to say, this 1890 Martin 1-26 has no twin anywhere across the planet: a piece of history in a category to itself.

1969 was the last year Martin would use Brazilian Rosewood on their standard models, and this D-28 lucked out with a gorgeous set that would be the apple of any luthier’s eye today. Sitka Spruce on top, 28-style appointments, black pickguard, and a 1 11/16 inch nut all make for a good-looking Dread from the sixties with a slick setup. There are only so many Martins from this era that have remained with their original owners, and this is one of the few!
The voice has more balance and note separation than we’d expect from a Dreadnought, and the bass response is also more focused. Combined with extra clarity in the upper mids and trebles, that extra articulation makes for a great guitar for flatpicked solos and lead work. The slim neck also lends itself to fast playing, so if you like to tear it up like Bryan Sutton or Tony Rice this 1969 D-28 is an excellent candidate for the job. Our repair team have gone over every inch and have given it a clean and stable bill of health; plenty of life left to the saddle and the frets are freshly leveled, crowned, and polished.
A great Martin Dread with a vintage, opened up voice that’s less muddy and more articulate.

One of the holy grails of Martin: a 1931 OM-18. Freshly restored to peak playing condition by our very own repair staff, this OM-18 has the voice of a well-seasoned angel over 80 years in the making, but the hot-off-the-presses playability of a new instrument! Weighing in at a lean 3lb 3oz, this OM-18 has an immense voice; the bass is dry and pronounced, and those treble strings crackle with energy.
It’s always a joy when we have the opportunity to bring these vintage gems back into the limelight, and this one is particularly successful crowd pleaser: everyone who lays hands on it has been blown away by the huge, clean tone. It practically plays itself with an impressive responsive and energetic fundamental.

There’s more raw, rich vintage tone wrapped up in this 1950 Martin D-28 than a whole stack of Bluegrass pickers would know what to do with–and that’s an understatement. The bass response is immense but well-focused; pluck the low E string and it cracks like a rifle (a really big, high-caliber rifle). The middle register is warm and equally precise, perfectly separated from trebles which are themselves sweet and articulate, not shrill. We’re looking at a definitive Bluegrass cannon, in all its Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce glory. In pretty good shape for its 66-year-old self, this D-28 is one of the best Dreadnoughts we’ve had through the shop in some time, and thanks to its new neck this 1950 Martin has an adjustable truss rod, so you can be certain it will continue to play powerfully and easily. Set up butter smooth, she practically plays herself. This D-28 comes in a Martin molded plastic hardshell case, but we can also supply the original case if desired.

1969 was a very good year to be a Martin D-28–this newly restored Dreadnought has miles and miles of sweet tunes behind it, and many miles yet before it. All the superlatives which made Martin guitars legendary–their thunderous projection, warmth, clarity, and depth–are out in full force once you tune this D-28 up to pitch.
Flatpickers! You have no idea how clean and energetic a tone you can get from the Sitka Spruce top on this guitar, almost without trying. If you’re interested in a beautiful piece of guitar history that’s optimized for flatpicking Bluegrass, Blues, and anything in between, we’d recommend taking this Martin for a spin. Brazilian Rosewood was becoming increasingly scarce by 1969, so we were happily surprised to find such an excellent set for the back and sides on this Dread. Do yourself a favor and come play this D-28 before it goes!

This Dreadnought feels patriotic every day of the year! Adorned with stars across the fretboard and stripes across the three-piece Indian Rosewood back and Sitka Spruce top, this Martin D-76 is number 1,855 of 1,976 guitars that Martin built in commemoration of the United States’ Bicentennial, making this the guitar for the year of 1855 (the last year of the California Gold Rush).
In excellent shape, this D-76 has a rich voice that’s backed up by Martin’s trademark Dreadnought projection, making this a Fourth of July firecracker for Bluegrass or Old Time flatpickers, and comes with its original Martin hardshell case in a unique shade of soft blue.

Needless to say, this old Martin’s seen a lot of the world since it was first played in 1951, and because of those travels this 000-28 has got some powerful stories to tell. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are completely opened up, rendering that strong, vigorous vintage tone which Martin lovers pore through every antique store and pawn shop in search of. This 000-28 has a responsive Spruce top and an agile, energetic voice that really lends itself to American Traditional fingerpicking arrangements, but has plenty of sustain and projection for flatpicking as well.
With the necessary setup work out of the way, this 000-28 is in peak playing condition, meaning that all that rich, explosively opened-up tone can be played with ease. Ready for many more decades of great music, this guitar reminds us what true vintage really sounds like.

The long and varied career of the Martin Guitar Company has had many fascinating turns across the decades. Back in the 1930s, Martin tried their hand at building Archtop guitars, many of which were later retopped as flattop acoustics. The C-2 Conversion we have here is just such a guitar–and we steel-string players couldn’t be happier. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are chocolate-rich (as is the voice), and the Spruce top has been masterfully braced for maximum projection. This is an excellent example of Martin’s early OM designs: tight waist, compact curves, and a well-balanced voice with low-end rumble that’s perfectly attuned to sweet, present treble strings.
According to its owner–tthe Irish multi-instrumentalist virtuoso John Doyle–this one was built in 1937, and is excellently broken-in and opened up, and plays with a vigorous tonality matched only by its shocking clarity. Martin’s OM shape gives this guitar a dynamic range which excels at fingerstyle with a thumbpick to bring out the crisp bass notes, or with flatpicks to make tunes sound full and complex, and the rounded neck profile is exceedingly comfortable on the hands. A guitar of this uniqueness won’t be here long; you’ll need to come play it before it’s gone!

A Bluegrass champion has risen, just in time for the holidays! And it comes to us straight from the hands of a Bluegrass legend, Mr. Tim Stafford of Blue Highway fame. This 1946 Martin D-28 of Stafford’s has been one of his staple guitars for quite a long time, and now you have the opportunity to add it to your arsenal, instead. Featuring the kind of straight-grained Brazilian Rosewood that was then an industry standard (and now is all but impossible to find) and a darkly sunburst Sitka Spruce top, this D-28 is a jaw-dropper. This kind of vigorous, muscular tone, you know it’s a Bluegrass machine, with clean highs and a low-end that is big, but controlled. Almost 70 years old, this working relic plays like it’s 20, and is set up for Bluegrass-style attack. With all that bark, you’d think it was a three-headed dog–take one bite, and you won’t like the taste of anything else. According to Wayne Henderson, this guitar was retopped by Martin in the late 40s, when it was still a baby, so the top has been played in and fully opened up since then. This D-28 is true vintage, and bears the marks of musicmaking with pride.

Just when you think you’ve got the vintage Martin sound memorized, there comes a guitar like this 1957 D-21 to turn it on its head. Think of it this way: this D-21 has had 58 years in which to learn how to sound good–and brother, this guitar took notes. The voice that comes screaming out of this Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce box is true vintage, broken in, opened up, and raring to go. The trebles are crisp and sweet, and the bass rolls like a kettle drum. Flatpickers will have their solos explode across the airwaves with the great projection and sustain, and Traditional-style fingerpickers have a strong, articulate voice in which to express themselves and their favorite arrangements. And this isn’t just your run-of-the-mill Martin from the 50’s–this D-21 has recently had a tune up at the hands of our own Ken Jones, who has restored this guitar to the playing condition of its adolescence.
Ever wonder what gorgeous vintage woods could do with a new pair of legs? Cover many more miles of great music, that’s what. Now, you can rest assured that this D-21 is ready for another 30 years. All that warmth, that punchy growl, the big, loud bark–all of that has been preserved for the next chapter of its life–in your hands. This guitar comes with a Martin molded hardshell case.

This is a guitar with all the strength, projection, and vintage tone that only a vintage Martin can provide. The 60’s were a great decade for Martin guitars, and this 1967 D-28 shows it with its Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Sitka Spruce top. All that premium-grade tonewood, combined with almost 50 years’ of musicmaking, make for a complex and responsive guitar with an expansive middle register and an articulate, tight low-end. There’s no overwhelming boom-chuck here: just an instrument optimally balanced across its registers and coupled with great projection. The Ivoroid and Mother-of-Pearl appointments are simple and matter-of-fact, like the tone; a guitar which is ready to get to work. This D-28 is true vintage: the woods have opened up well, and it has the vintage look of an instrument well-played for hundreds of hours. Plus, we’ve refretted the fretboard and reset the neck, so this D-28 from the end of the sixties (and hence the end of production Brazilian Rosewood Martins) plays like its brand new and is in great shape for another thirty years’ worth of tunes. This guitar comes with a molded Martin Hardshell case.

We’ve got another fine addition to our Martin family in the store today: a 1954 Martin 000-21 in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce! This vintage Martin has a nice, fat voice and a warm, woody tone that’s completely opened up. The 000 body provides a tight articulation across the registers, and that Brazilian Rosewood back and sides gives the guitar some great projection, making it an excellent choice for more rockin styles of music or Appalachian Trad. Flatpicked, this guitar’s got plenty of bark to go around, and the narrow nut/saddle allows for easy playing. Thanks to the 14 fret neck, the tone is a bit darker than other 000’s, and has more low-end to boast about. This Martin has been making music for 60 years, most recently with four time Grammy award-winner David Holt, it’s present owner, and it’s ready for more.

The 1920’s were a good decade for Martin Guitars, and this 1926 00-18 is a fine example of the calibre of instrument America was producing at that time. The warmth, vigor, and bright tone of this 00 is very impressive; the guitar has completely opened up, given its almost centenarian status. For an instrument of this age, it’s in remarkable condition, with minimal play wear and only a minor crack that our own Ken Jones repaired. Pick this baby up out of its case, and you’ll be shocked at how light it is–and that lightweight construction translates into a Mahogany soundbox that has heaps and heaps of volume and a Adirondack Spruce top. Fingerstylists and Traditional musicians, this guitar will sing beneath your fingertips.

Every now and then, you get to play a guitar which just blows you away. When you put this 1927 Martin 0-28K Parlor in your hands, we guarantee that’s exactly what will happen. This is true vintage: 88 years old, and still going strong. This Parlor has had some work done along the way, most recently a new bridge and plate built and installed by luthier Bill Tippin, but its still just as warm and vigorous as it always was. The all-Koa body is a great example of this wood’s characteristics: the grain is tightly quilted, the color between burnt amber and caramel, and the tone is fabulously rich and energetic. This guitar has completely opened up, and plays extraordinarily easily; definitely a fingerstylist’s wet dream. Traditional Ivoroid bindings, Herringbone and Zigzag trim, and original tuners complete the image of the fabled pre-war Martin guitar. Think of all the generations of parlor guitars that came from this design–what we have here is one of the archtypes of the model. The guitar’s got great projection and trebles which sing and a sweet middle register. This guitar comes with a TKL hardshell case.
