1941 Martin 000-28 Brazilian/Engelmann
Martin lovers, rejoice! We just landed a sweet old package in the shop: a 1941 Martin 000-28, formerly owned by famed guitarist of Union Station, co-founder of Blue Highway, and accomplished producer of performers like Kenny Chesney: Tim Stafford. This guitar has bucketfuls of tone; it's got tone spilling out of the sound hole the second you pull it out of the case. And what a wonderful sound this Martin makes! The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and the Engelmann Spruce top have opened up completely, giving the guitar a strong, hearty, mature character. This one's definitely not over the hill yet: it sounds as loud and as strong as someone in their prime. It belts it out, too—and the entire instrument vibrates as you play it; it's an enveloping experience. Lastly, this guitar is over seven decades old, but still has almost surgical articulation. It is, of course, a survivor of a tempestuous 74 years, and it bears the scars of all that blood, sweat, and tears proudly, and doesn't suffer for it acoustically at all. And, to prevent any scars in the future, this Martin comes with a TKL tweed hardshell case.

Here we have a rare Martin 00-21 from 1987, one of only nineteen ever made. Made from East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce this little guitar has plenty volume and overtones. Playing this guitar feels like a breeze, it is small and intimate and can be held for hours. But don’t let the small size fool you — it has plenty of sound to give. And if somehow that’s not enough it even comes with a brand new L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup so you can play this one anywhere and still be sure to move the masses. At 28 years old this guitar is in incredible shape. Now all it needs is a new home to give it another few decades of love.

Occasionally a guitar comes along with an exceptionally fine voice and the owner of whatever store it ends up in just has to buy it for him or herself. Such was the case for Danny Brevard, the founder of Acoustic Pro Musician, when this 1976 Martin D-35 Shaded Top came through the door. When we acquired Danny’s store upon his retirement, he decided to finally part ways with his long-time companion and placed it in our care to sell on his behalf. This guitar is the embodiment of what we have come to expect from the pairing of East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. It has a balanced voice with great projection that will cut nicely through in a group playing session. It is easy to see why Danny kept this one for himself for so long!
Before we made this guitar available for sale, Stephen Kinnaird, a certified Martin repairman, gave it a beautiful neck reset and full setup. The bridge, saddle, nut, finish and frets are all original. Danny replaced the pickguard (the original is still in the case) with a TorTis® pickguard and also installed upgraded Gotoh Gold open-backed tuners. The guitar is fabulous and the price is right. Original “Blue” Martin case included!

Here we have a great 12 string D-35 from the fine folks at C.F. Martin and Co. This D12-35 is made from a three piece Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Sitka Spruce top. There really is nothing quite like a Martin 12 string, this one has plenty of that famous Martin tone to offer up, whether you are strumming or doing some light fingerpicking, this guitar will rumble on the lows on sparkle on the highs. Playability is a big issue on 12 string guitars, often the action is exceptionally tough on the left hand, not so here, this one plays as easy as its 6 string counterpart.

Here we go everybody, buckle in for this one. We have an absolute cream of the crop 1927 Martin 00-18. This is what the pre-war Martin tone is all about. Sound flies out of this guitar with the lightest touch, and it is oh so sweet. Dig in a little bit and you get that great woody growl from the Mahogany and Adirondack (Red) Spruce. This is one of the lightest guitars we have come across – be careful picking it up or you may end up tossing it across the room! This is truly a special instrument that we feel represents exactly what people think of when they talk about a Pre War Martin.

We have been extremely fortunate recently to have two truly great pre-war Martins come in to the shop, both of which happen to be 00s. This is a 00-40H built from top shelf Brazilian Rosewood (good luck finding a set of Brazilian this nice these days) and a fine, tight-grained Adirondack Spruce top. The pre-war tone in full force here: this guitar is loud, with the mature complexity that you can’t find in a new guitar. Playing this guitar is all romance; it takes you back in time to that golden era–and this 00-40H plays incredibly smoothly. A proud survivor of the 80 years, this guitar has decades of music left in it, and let’s face it, they don’t make ’em like these anymore: you owe it to yourself to play this guitar before all of its brethren disappear.
We loved this one so much that we teamed up with Al Petteway and recorded it on our latest album: Dream Guitars Volume II Hand Picked, track #1, “I Don’t Want To Be Sad No More.”

Here we have a wonderful prewar 1937 Martin D-28 in Adirondack Spruce and straight-grained, quartersawn Brazilian Rosewood. The owner bought it when he was just 14 yrs old and he’s owned it ever since. He’s now unable to play, as he’s 89 years young, and wants someone else to love and play this fine ’37 Martin. But there’s more to the story, his daughter is a divorced, single mom putting herself through a Masters Degree program and struggling to pay for the last year of her schooling. The sale of this guitar will not only ensure that one of the best old Martins continues to make music, but it will also allow a 89 year old Father to help his daughter and grandchildren have a better life. That’s what we call a win-win in the guitar world.
This 1937 Martin D-28 was sent back to Martin in the 1970s and they re-topped the guitar. We had Master Luthier Bill Tippin go over it so that it sounds amazing and plays like a new guitar. See the condition notes for details. Here’s a chance at one of the rare D-28 from the finest era but priced right do to it’s condition. Could be a great candidate for a re-top project to restore it to 1937 specs!

The Grandson of the owner of this 1934 Martin 000-18 brought it to us in all original condition. It needed a little love so we enlisted Master Luthier Bill Tippin to bring it back to it’s glory. Bill truly loves to work on vintage gems, especially ones like this. We were able to keep it completely original but for a new bridge and thin sister plate added to the bridgeplate. See the condition statement for details.
As for the tone, this is a sweetheart! Powerful, dry, throaty, everything you want in a Prewar Mahogany/Adirondack Martin. It’s a featherweight and the notes just fill the room. The setup is perfect and it plays beautifully. Bill carefully rounded the bar fret ends for a great feel. This one has some patina and very cool wear, but it’s solid and ready for another 80+ years of music!
