1923 Gibson F-5 Lloyd Loar, Maple/Spruce
Amazing. This is among the rarest, and finest, Gibson mandolins we’ve had the pleasure of hosting: a 1923 F-5 Lloyd Loar. All original, right down to the virzi inside, and still in great playing shape today, 100 years later. That in itself is amazing–this beauty is still going strong! This ’23 Loar comes to us with serial number 72857, carved body of Maple body with Spruce top, light sunburst finish, smooth tuner operation and weighs in just over two pounds.
The Loar era has forever changed the definition of the American mandolin, and here we have a pristine example of his early magic that’s inspired so many generations of builders and players.

A gorgeous, mostly original Gibson F4 from 1920. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top and a Varnish finish throughout, Ivoroid bindings and half rope rosette trim, original inlaid tuners and pickguard—it’s a sweetheart. Gibson wasn’t using adjustable bridges until the 1920s, so we believe this bridge was added afterwards, although the footprint of the bridge matches the impressions in the top finish. If it is replaced, it appears to have been done very early in its life. Our repair staff recently went over it from tuner to tail and have given it a clean bill of health (and refretting it for a killer setup).

From the famed workbench of Wayne Henderson, we have another Henderson F5 Mandolin here to prove what an F-style mando is supposed to sound like! This 2002 F5 has a gorgeous sunburst finish, Grained Ivoroid trim, and custom-made brass tailpiece with a hinged cover engraced with Wayne’s own moniker. Lloyd Loar would be proud to call this mandolin a descendant of his own creations–quick response, stellar string-to-string separation, and impressive projection.
Weighing in at 2lbs on the nose, this Henderson F5 is a Maple-and-Spruce featherweight in the hands, but offers some meaty sustain, especially with the crystalline treble strings. Lots of chop for a Bluegrass session, but clarity and articulation enough for Jazz and experimental flavors, too. There are only ever a few of Wayne’s mandolins available on the market: jump before this one disappears!

Here we have a beautiful Mendel octave mandolin in Granadillo and Sitka Spruce. As the name suggests, this wonderful instrument is intended to be tuned an octave below standard mandolin tuning, but is equally happy in alternate tunings. The sound is at once familiar yet refreshing. The unison-string chime of the mandolin family is present, but the strident, higher-pitched wail of the mandolin is replaced with a warmth and intimacy that harkens back to the Old World. And because of the larger air volume within the body, notes ring out and sustain like a church bell. An exquisite instrument that’s different in all the right ways.

Here we have a mint condition 2004 Phoenix Mandolins Deluxe Model. Insanely Figured Maple and Adirondack Spruce, strung with medium Thomastik strings for a gorgeous sound with superb playability. Rolfe Gerhardt hand makes these versatile Mandolins for players who want the best. You won’t believe the great feel these have!
From the Phoenix website: “The Deluxe Model was created as the result of requests by professional musicians who want a medium-string mandolin that would excel at all kinds of music but was styled with the clean, elegant appearance of the Neoclassical, and…would include a built-in pickup. To distinguish it from the Neoclassical: the Deluxe is colored with a lightly-sunburst, warm, violin dark-brown under the hybrid varnish; the Grover tuners are gold with custom black parts and buttons; and the fingerboard features the trademarked abalone vine created for the Unicorn Master Models of the 1970s and included on the “Pickin'” fingerboard poster.”

And now for something completely different. We’ve got an incredible Giant Cittern from the one and only Stefan Sobell, one of the original pioneers in modern Cittern and Bouzouki innovation for Irish and folk music. This fearsome piece was commissioned by Joseph Sobol in 1992, at the time one of only six that Stefan had ever built to these dimensions. Since then, this Cittern was also owned by Henry Kaiser for a time, and we’ve got it now! Decked out with Indian Rosewood back and sides and a European Spruce top and 12 strings—yep. You can rig this one a variety of ways; we’ve got it set up sort of as as 12-string guitar in CGCGCD, and it fills the entire room at first pluck! It also takes to DADGAD, guitar Standard—the sky’s the limit with our Sobell Giant Ciittern in your hands.

Stefan Sobell is not currently making any mandolin family instruments due to his large backlog of guitar orders. So these are becoming very hard to find. This is the first we’ve seen in quite a while and it’s a good one. These early mandos from Stefan are loud and clear with his distinct European tone. They excel at Celtic music and this one plays great and is in lovely condition. This particular mando is on the album “First Flight” by Gerald Trimble.
