Here we have a mint condition 2004 Phoenix Mandolins Deluxe Model. Insanely Figured Maple and Adirondack Spruce, strung with medium Thomastik strings for a gorgeous sound with superb playability. Rolfe Gerhardt hand makes these versatile Mandolins for players who want the best. You won’t believe the great feel these have!
From the Phoenix website: “The Deluxe Model was created as the result of requests by professional musicians who want a medium-string mandolin that would excel at all kinds of music but was styled with the clean, elegant appearance of the Neoclassical, and…would include a built-in pickup. To distinguish it from the Neoclassical: the Deluxe is colored with a lightly-sunburst, warm, violin dark-brown under the hybrid varnish; the Grover tuners are gold with custom black parts and buttons; and the fingerboard features the trademarked abalone vine created for the Unicorn Master Models of the 1970s and included on the “Pickin'” fingerboard poster.”

Stumble into the world of banjos, and you just don’t know what you’ll find. The S.S. Stewart Banjeaurine we have in the store today is just such a find: a nylon, five-string banjo tuned up to Open C. These instruments were immensely popular in the Banjo Orchestras between the 1888 and 1910s, where they were relied on for the majority of the solos in those ensembles. This particular style of banjo was invented by S.S. Stewart himself, and later replicated by many of the major names in the banjo industry of the early Twentieth Century in America. In 1894, you could have purchased this little gem for $50!This S.S. Stewart Banjeaurine has a sweet, warm voice, new head (installed by banjo builder and master carver R.M. Anderson), and a smooth setup–with enough projection to work well by itself or if you’re looking to start the next Banjo Orchestra Revival of the 21st Century!

The tone of a good open back Clawhammer banjo can be quite enchanting, transporting the listener to a simpler time back to the mountains, maybe on Grandpas porch. This S.S. Stewart Banjo is just on of those kinds of instrument, built in the 1890’s, it could have very well been played on a porch in the mountains. This banjo has a great open and plunky sound perfect for clawhammer style. Lawrence Brown, a master Lute maker, made the new neck on this Banjo, and is excellent. It is easy to play and even easier on the eyes with its beautifully engraved inlays.

The 2010 Sheppard Madrigal we’ve got in the shop today is a special kind of beast. Not only is it a 12-string guitar in East Indian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce, it’s also south paw friendly! And it boasts basically every special feature and custom option that Gerald Sheppard offers. You name it, the lefty Madrigal’s got it. Arm, rib, and cutaway bevel: check. L.R. Baggs I-Mix preamp and pickup system: ready to rock. Blue Paua rosette, back strip, and inlay: stunning. Deluxe “American Vintage” hardshell case and Mammoth Fossilized Ivory nut and saddle: you bet. Unfortunately for everyone in the shop, we aren’t left-hand players, so we aren’t able to bring out the full potential of this awesome creature, but from what we’ve been able to pick out sounds absolutely rich and resonant, with a low-end that is well-balanced and maintains pitch like a pro. This guitar is five years old, but to look at it you wouldn’t guess it was older than five months; it’s in almost mint condition. If you’re a left-handed player who’s tired of settling for cheaper guitars without all the bells and whistles that your right-handed brethren seem to have a monopoly on, this Sheppard Madrigal 12-string is seriously worth your time. We can say with confidence that there aren’t many options on the market right now that can compare to this south paw powerhouse.

And now for something completely different. We’ve got an incredible Giant Cittern from the one and only Stefan Sobell, one of the original pioneers in modern Cittern and Bouzouki innovation for Irish and folk music. This fearsome piece was commissioned by Joseph Sobol in 1992, at the time one of only six that Stefan had ever built to these dimensions. Since then, this Cittern was also owned by Henry Kaiser for a time, and we’ve got it now! Decked out with Indian Rosewood back and sides and a European Spruce top and 12 strings—yep. You can rig this one a variety of ways; we’ve got it set up sort of as as 12-string guitar in CGCGCD, and it fills the entire room at first pluck! It also takes to DADGAD, guitar Standard—the sky’s the limit with our Sobell Giant Ciittern in your hands.

They excel at Celtic music and this one plays great and is in lovely condition. This particular mando is on the album “First Flight” by Gerald Trimble.
