Hamblin SJ Flamed Mahogany/Cedar Made For Jim Tozier
Kent Hamblin has worked with Charles Fox and taught at the Roberto-Venn school of luthery so it’s little surprise that his guitars are well crafted and elegantly designed. We particularly like his sense of style, how the small elements create his look. This SJ was originally made for recording artist Jim Tozier and is defined by it’s stunning fiddle back Flamed Mahogany and Red Cedar top. These woods give it a boisterous voice that is clear and warm. The 25.6″ scale invites Drop D and DADGAD or is home in Standard and the wider spacings are perfect for fingerstyle. Framed in curly Maple from top to bottom this is a sophisticated guitar that is stunning on many levels. This instrument features:

Herman Hauser I needs no introduction to the classical world. However, aside from the family of Spanish guitars for which he is best known, Hauser I also built a number of other instruments according to the musical trends of the turn of the twentieth century, among them zithers and even lutes. Here we have an example of his Vienna Hybrid model, a design favored in the Munich music scene with Maple body over Spruce, an adjustable neck, mustache bridge, and zero fret. The sound is lively and quick, with a punchy, bright treble register that cuts through the mix. The bass register is energetic and brassy and projects with a crisp sweetness. Playability is superb, plus this Vienna model with its thin sides (only 3” at the tail) weighs in just over three pounds.
A remarkable example of one of traditional lutherie’s giants, this Hauser I Vienna model is a testament to his enduring legacy.Other keywords: classical guitar, classical, nylon string, luthier, lutherie, fingerstyle, marquetry, handmade, french polished, steve newbrough, andy jurik, 339867, viena, veinna, russell cleveland

Two names that have inspired generations, Hermann Hauser and Andrés Segovia. This gorgeous example of the living tradition in which Hauser III works comes to us from 1999 in Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce, opened up and balanced from tuners to bridge. The Segovia model is based on the man’s 1937 Hauser I, the very design that has so informed classical guitar for the better part of the last century.
Excellent note separation across the registers, and a warm bass response clarified by a focused fundamental. A veil of haunting treble overtones round out the voice and lend extra depth to sustained notes.
This Segovia model from Hauser III is a prime example of the heirloom-grade classical guitar. Here, tradition excels.

It’s a rare day when we get to spend it with one of Drew Heinonen’s guitars. This SJ comes to us from 2018 with fantastically Figured Sapele back and sides (The Tree devotees take note), Cedar on top, and the Olson-inspired Abalone dove inlays and multi-laminated neck. Slender profile for an agile lefthand feel, and a light buildweight to boot. This particular wood combination balances a crisp fundamental with just enough warm overtones to make for a voice that’s complex, but has good motion and separation across the registers. The bass in particular has a sweet blooming quality when big chords are left to ring out.

Drew Heinonen’s builds are a nod to Jim Olson, but with a flavor and tone all Drew’s own. This 2016 SJ is a beautiful example of that with Fiddleback Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and elegant wood appointments. It weighs in at a slim four pounds flat, and we love the slim carve of the neck for easy playability. You can lean into this one with an aggressive flatpicking attack and get a lot of bark, or sweetness with fingers. The trebles are smooth, cool, and oh so clear.

We’re more than excited to announce our latest partnership with builder Drew Heinonen—and what better way to cut the ribbon to this enterprise than with a brand new 2018 SJ in Bubinga and Sinker Redwood? Bedecked with MOP and Paua Abalone trim and a 42-style treatment across the fretboard, our first Heinonen proves that good looks can get you pretty far in life, but what about that tone? With an aesthetic sympathetic to Jim Olson’s own, it’s not a stretch to expect a similar flavor to the voice as well, which is exactly what we’re here to report.
The name of the game here is clarity. That, and balance. And dynamism. This Heinonen SJ offers a colorful tone palette that works well for a wide range of styles, and we found this guitar soaked up a heavy attack as easily as a gentler touch without topping out. There’s a touch of the Olson smoothness here, but a different brand of energetic response that’s all Drew’s own. The smooth contour of the C profile neck felt like glass in our hands. Speaking of glass, the UV-cured Cardinal finish Drew uses is here buffed to a mirror sheen that’s velvet smooth to the touch.
The experience of playing this Heinonen SJ is one characterized by easy playability, responsiveness, and an expansive dynamic range.Other keywords: james olson, dana bourgeois, bourgeois guitars, olson guitars, t. drew heinonen, fingerstyle, cedar creek, gotoh tuners

Here’s a Henderson that stands apart. Not only were Wayne’s legendary hands involved—Rudie Blazer (of Blazer & Henkes), John Arnold, and Don Wilson all pitched in for this 2010 000-42. Old-growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (plus headstock veneer); Red Spruce top that Arnold harvested after Hurricane Opal; Mahogany neck block from a 150-year-old mantle; hand engraved tuners from Blazer & Henkes’ shop. The list goes on. The neck is carved in an homage to blues guitar necks of old, and is chunky in hand and features a 1 7/8” nut to boot. Don’t be scared, we found this neck to be effortlessly playable, and quite comfortable. There’s a familiarity and confidence that comes from having good contact with the neck along your hand, and this one has that in spades. Dark blue Abalone bedecks the Red Spruce top with black purflings to really set it off, and the Ivoroid bindings bring it all together. This 000-42 is 100% a Henderson, but the top is signed by everyone to further set this one apart. It was even featured in a Fretboard Journal article in 2014 (https://www.fretboardjournal.com/features/four-kind-watching-luthiers-wayne-henderson-don-wilson-rudie-blazer-john-arnold-work/).
