2019 Halland DC-H, African Blackwood/European Spruce
Here we go! This fantastic example of modern lutherie from Gage Halland is his DC-H model from 2019, here in African Blackwood and European Spruce, and dressed to the nines with EVO frets, a multiscale fingerboard, twinned arm and rib bevels (featuring his hallmark lamb’s tongue detail work), and pinless bridge in the style of Michael Greenfield (with whom Gage apprenticed for several years before striking out on his own). This is our first instrument from Gage Halland’s Portland, Oregon shop—and we don’t want to let it go. This brand new OMC-H is loud, it’s crisp, and it is an absolute pleasure to play. Here’s the skinny: Honduran Mahogany back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, tasteful sunburst, and an arm bevel with lamb’s tongue ends. Pinless Ebony bridge, bone nut and saddle, deep Florentine Cutaway, and a Hoffee flight case for maximum protection. The fit and finish on this guitar is flawless—we’d expect no less from a builder who apprenticed under Michael Greenfield—and the setup is like spreading warm butter over steaming toast; you melt right in.
The tone of this Halland OMC-H is equal parts clarity, Mahogany crunch, and smooth projection. We had a blast in standard tuning, as well as DADGAD, and we’re more than happy to report that this beauty holds up so well to picks, we almost forgot to test its mettle as a fingerstyle guitar. On that front, the Halland excels. Isn’t this guitar brand new? You wouldn’t notice by the tone alone: it already sounds wide open and chock full of energy.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, handmade, contemporary guitar, abalone, gotoh

This Grand Concert from Kent Hamblin is characterized by focus, balance, and a meaty midrange that really fills out the voice. It was built in 2005, and has over 15 years of opening up under its belt—and it shows in the ease with which it responds to both a light touch and more aggressive attack. Note definition is crisp and distinct, giving chords a technicolor aspect that we find particularly enveloping in altered tunings. A soft V neck in Mahogany with slick, fast setup makes for an effortless playing experience, and this Hamblin’s further outfitted with a comfy 1 13/16” nut for a spacious fretting feel. The tonewoods Kent pulled together here are astounding. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides feature dramatic black silk lines, and the European Spruce top has yellowed nicely with age (all the better to show off its tight grain patterns). The weight ratio between the neck and body is dialed in for a comfortable balance that keeps the GC square on your leg. Everything about this Hamblin just feels comfortable and sweetly familiar—and it’s got enough gears under the hood for years of good music yet.

Kent Hamblin’s 100th guitar is a phenomenal fingerstyle machine. And it’s decked out with appropriately wonderful tonewoods: highly figured The Tree Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce in Kent’s Grand Concert body size. The balance from bass to treble, frets one to 20, is oh-so-crisp; fingerstyle tunes in Standard or DADGAD are rich and complex, and at the same time precise. Playability is effortless with a slinky setup to boot, and when not in play this Hamblin is lovely to behold: these tonewoods are the cream of the crop, and the Snakewood bindings set off the Spruce and Mahogany handsomely.
We can’t recommend this Hamblin more highly: it’s the perfect combination of beauty and power, with the looks to back it up.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, gc, gotoh, ameritage, snake wood, evo frets, cutaway

Now this is a real treat. We’ve landed a lively 2005 Hamblin GC with primo tonewoods and an exquisitely balanced voice that’s available now. Brazilian Rosewood pulled from Jeff Traugott’s own personal stash, here paired with a Carpathian Spruce top and 25.4” scale, makes for extra clarity and sustain. This Hamblin’s string to string balance is such that all the registers work together very evenly, with no emphasis of one over the other, allowing big chords and multi string solos to ring out crisply. It holds up very well under a pick in standard tuning, as well as DADGAD, and the lightweight build (4lbs on the nose) and glassy setup make for a smooth ride every time we pick up the instrument.
This 2005 Hamblin GC is the guitar for you, if you’re looking for balance, clarity, and playability.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, brazilain, grand concert, waverly, cedar creek

This is a striking Hamblin SJ crafted from dramatic striped Ebony and a premium Italian Spruce top. The Ebony makes for tremendous sustain and big push of energy off the back that makes this a very loud and immediate guitar. Italian Spruce is one of the very strongest top woods we have and it always provides great clarity and sparkle in addition to power. This is a guitar with a big voice that is well suited for any style where volume is appreciated but it’s also a lovely voice and allows you to emote when played more softly.

There’s nothing small sounding about this “Small Jumbo” from Kent Hamblin. Amazon Rosewood and lovely fine-grained Italian Spruce combine to reward the player with a lush warmth accented by clear and balanced highs. Befitting a jumbo-class guitar, the bass is rich and full, yet it never overpowers. Flamed Koa accents and binding provide a beautiful and fitting complement. I didn’t want to put this one down.

Kent Hamblin has worked with Charles Fox and taught at the Roberto-Venn school of luthery so it’s little surprise that his guitars are well crafted and elegantly designed. We particularly like his sense of style, how the small elements create his look. This SJ was originally made for recording artist Jim Tozier and is defined by it’s stunning fiddle back Flamed Mahogany and Red Cedar top. These woods give it a boisterous voice that is clear and warm. The 25.6″ scale invites Drop D and DADGAD or is home in Standard and the wider spacings are perfect for fingerstyle. Herman Hauser I needs no introduction to the classical world. However, aside from the family of Spanish guitars for which he is best known, Hauser I also built a number of other instruments according to the musical trends of the turn of the twentieth century, among them zithers and even lutes. Here we have an example of his Vienna Hybrid model, a design favored in the Munich music scene with Maple body over Spruce, an adjustable neck, mustache bridge, and zero fret. The sound is lively and quick, with a punchy, bright treble register that cuts through the mix. The bass register is energetic and brassy and projects with a crisp sweetness. Playability is superb, plus this Vienna model with its thin sides (only 3” at the tail) weighs in just over three pounds.
A remarkable example of one of traditional lutherie’s giants, this Hauser I Vienna model is a testament to his enduring legacy.Other keywords: classical guitar, classical, nylon string, luthier, lutherie, fingerstyle, marquetry, handmade, french polished, steve newbrough, andy jurik, 339867, viena, veinna, russell cleveland
1999 Hauser III Segovia Model, Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce
Two names that have inspired generations, Hermann Hauser and Andrés Segovia. This gorgeous example of the living tradition in which Hauser III works comes to us from 1999 in Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce, opened up and balanced from tuners to bridge. The Segovia model is based on the man’s 1937 Hauser I, the very design that has so informed classical guitar for the better part of the last century.
Excellent note separation across the registers, and a warm bass response clarified by a focused fundamental. A veil of haunting treble overtones round out the voice and lend extra depth to sustained notes.
This Segovia model from Hauser III is a prime example of the heirloom-grade classical guitar. Here, tradition excels.
