1964 Kono 3 Rosewood/Spruce
Here is a a rare and historic early Kono No. 3 Model guitar crafted in 1964. At this point Masaru Kohno did not use the ‘h’ in Kohno. This vintage Kono guitar features Rosewood and Spruce for that crisp, robust tone that professionals have come to expect from Masaru’s instruments. The super playable, smooth action on the Rosewood fretboard and 51mm nut makes this early Kohno extremely playable. A testament to the quality of Kohno guitars is how well this one has stood the test of time. Nearly 50 years old and still plays perfectly with plenty of remaining saddle. This is a wonderful collectible Kono from the first years of Master Masaru Kohno’s illustrious career.

Another client commission gone right! Our friend Kevin Kopp worked with us to pull off a custom RJ (Robert Johnson) model for one of our clients, and we couldn’t be more impressed by the results. Petite but curvaceous, with a voice to match. The voice is characterized by a roundness and warmth that quickly fires out of the soundhole; even balance across the registers for fingerpicking goodness. We picked out one of our personal sets of Brazilian Rosewood and sent it to Kevin for the build, which he paired with European Spruce on top and a period correct sunburst, Maple bindings, and Waverly tuners. The short scale, 24 3/4” fingerboard joins the body at the 12th fret, activating the top for added warmth and playability, and the medium-thick C neck profile feels instantly familiar and easy in hand.

Lots of blues grumble and crack! Super fun from tuner to tail. Short scale with a chunky neck to boot; we simply love the Kopp L-02T. Brand new Kopp L-02, anyone? This beautiful little blues machine features Mahogany back and sides, a torrefied Adirondack Spruce top, and a dark sunburst with tiger stripe pickguard for maximum mojo. We love how easily this L-02 plays; and the baked Adi top gives the voice a crisp and opened up flavor we’d expect from a proper vintage cannon, but here in a shiny new package. The short scale (24.75”) neck lends warmth and bloom, and we loved taking this one down to Open D for some country blues fingerpicking.

To celebrate his 10th anniversary, Kevin Kopp pulled out all the stops (and a few neighboring stops, too) for this force-of-nature K-200. Beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a lovely hand rubbed sunburst to make that grain pop! In remaining true to tradition, he then added a hand painted pickguard, Waverly tuners, and a rectangle bridge plus MOP block inlays. The voice is nothing short of incredible. Bass response to shake your bones, and those trebles cut right through the mix. Clean projection, and when you dig in, it digs in too. When you let up, the tone remains crisp and defined. Well, it really does it all, and it does it all really well. Our 2016 Kopp K-200 10th Anniversary is a powerhouse.

Hot off the presses! We’ve just landed a brand new Kopp Nick Lucas model, straight from Kevin’s shop to ours. Paul is a big fan of all things Nick Lucas, so we decided to commission this particular beauty with the classic 13-fret neck and Celtic fretboard inlays. Flame Maple back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, and a lovely burst to tie it all together. Kevin’s voiced this one with a firecracker mentality that’s excellent for fingerpicking, blues, and backing up your golden vocals. The bridge is made of Madagascar Rosewood, you’ll find a Bone nut, saddle, and pins, and a thin (read: 0.004”) lacquer finish to keep things resonant as possible. Tiger stripe pickguard and Waverly tuners are the icing and cherry on the cake.

Kevin Kopp started his own business after working for ten years in the Gibson Custom Shop. His guitars are reminiscent of old Gibsons. This particular model was made famous by Leo Kottke, who still plays one in his shows. This is Kevin’s Trail Boss Jumbo model crafted in Flamed Maple and Spruce and adorned witha Cherry sunburst throughout. With full Ivoroid bindings and firestripe pickguard it has a cool vintage Gibson style. The voice is big and bad as you might guess…

Jason Kostal plus Michael Watts—the result is delicious indeed. These two have collaborated for a unique take on the Somogyi Modified Dreadnought body: shrink by 15%, then add a 12-fret neck and new bracing scheme, and the result is this piece of magic, the MDW. The smaller body dimensions make for an easy and effortless playing experience, as does the 12-fret neck join and 25” scale. Paired with Fiddleback Mahogany and German Spruce, the result is a combination of a quick fundamental and a sweet warmth in the overtones. It’s exquisite for fingerstyle thanks to those qualities and a crisp, easy balance from string to string and across the registers. This MDW (or MD Watts if you like) was recently finished in 2020 and is like new, but already quite wide awake and singing. Plus, that means this Kostal is only going to get better from this point forward—and it’s already so strong.

With a guitar from Jason Kostal, we know we’ve got a special treat in store. After apprenticing under the godfather of modern guitarbuilding, Ervin Somogyi, Kostal struck out on his own several years back, and he’s been hard at work honing his own style and voice. The result? This work of elegance from 2020. Here Jason lets the tonewoods speak for themselves—dark Indian Rosewood, pale German Spruce, Rosewood bridge and two-tone headstock veneers. At the soundhole he used his trademark Stained Glass rosette to add a splash of color (here a mix of purples, lilacs, and earthy pinks); otherwise, it’s the quality of the craftpersonship and the materials that dictate the aesthetic.
That understated quality is echoed in the voice to a degree as well. Note definition is smooth and balanced across the registers, and we love that the response is even and consistent along the fretboard. There are also some haunting treble overtones that come out under a delicate and spacious touch which we loved. The setup is silk smooth to the touch, just like every other aspect of this Kostal OM.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, stain glass rosette, hoffee, 2-tone headstock, 171

The bass register has a rich and rolling fundamental that fits in well with a warm midrange. The trebles are crisp and defined, and cut through the mix. The trebles have a sweetness and overtone bloom that really fills out the voice. Is it really basically new? Surprisingly yes, considering the voice is so rich and opened up. Big voice! Comfortable body. We love this 2018 Kostal OM. Not only does it feature some seriously gorgeous woods (Figured Koa back and sides, German Spruce top) and Jason’s two-tone headstock, it also packs a fierce wallop with even a light touch. Crisp, clean balance from string to string, with a particularly lively bass response. The Koa lends an evenness to note definition that’s really sweet: big chords ring out in articulate, technicolor glory. The setup is slinky and smooth just the way we like it for standard, DADGAD, and beyond. It even holds up well under a pick. This is the kind of guitar you just don’t want to put down—precisely what we’ve come to expect from Jason Kostal.

Jason Kostal manages to fit a lot into his 00 model. This particular example comes to us from 2015, when Jason built it for the Memphis Guitar Show, and has a gorgeous set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides, and a creamy German Spruce top. The Stained Glass rosette has an orange-and-red flair that’s reminiscent of fall leaves, and at the headstock you’ll find Jason’s two-tone veneer of Ebony over Rosewood. 12 frets to the body, Gotoh 510 tuners in gold and Ebony, and a 1 3/4” nut for easy playing.
The voice of this Kostal 00 is smooth to the point of transparency. We love how individual notes ring out with clarity and definition, and remain distinct to each other. The trebles have a cool, liquid quality to them that’s particularly mesmerizing, especially when you tune the guitar down. Built in 2015 but with hardly a mark on it, this Kostal 00 is in incredible condition to keep on making music.Other keywords: custom guitar, lutherie, luthier, hoffee, flight case, fingerstyle, oo, parlor guitar, somogyi
