Built as the Cedar-topped twin to Kolaya #31, a Cocobolo-and-White–Spruce MJ, this Kolaya is a powerful example of how Cedar can give a guitar extra warmth in the middle registers while simultaneously fattening the trebles and coloring the bass. Played in standard or dropped into DADGAD, the Kolaya has a pronounced and well-defined bass, and the setup strikes a perfect balance for both fingerstyle and flatpicking approaches.
Need trebles with delicious overtones that hang in the air? The Kolaya MJ is here to help. Need vigorous sustain? Got it! We love Brad Daniels’ aesthetic here, with the spalted woods inlaid into the fretboard extension, and the overall fit and finish is flawless.

In our shop of fingerstyle guitars, this 2012 Kolaya (Brad Daniels) MJ fits perfectly. With its 16″ lower bout and Cocobolo back and sides, this guitar exhibits deep, rolling bass notes, themselves crisp and well-defined. Fleshed out with a balanced middle register and trebles with a juicy brand of clarity, thanks to the White Spruce top, this MJ is the envy of less well-balanced guitars everywhere.
Fingerstyle arrangements are lush and complex, each string present and articulate–and dropped down to DADGAD and beyond, this Kolaya MJ remains fresh and projective. The C profile neck is gracefully contoured and feels instantly familiar in your left hand, and Daniels‘ contemporary aesthetic lends this guitar a unique, understated sense of style.

Saul Koll’s Super Glide Almighty feels right at home in your hands with a satin finish and Charlie Christian Vintage Vibe pickups, plus two three-way switches for a ton of tone possibilities. Bigsby tailpiece and trem adds even more versatility to the mix. The body is semi-hollow with a bass side F hole, and weighs in at a solid eight pounds, the weight of which adds sustain to the energetic CC pickups. Asymmetrical curves along the body and at the headstock, plus offset MOP position markers, rounds out the image of a modern powerhouse. This beauty comes to us from 2017 but is like new.

Smooth to a T and balanced like a dancer. This 1959 Masaru Kono performs with precision and elegance, with a lovely balance across the registers and a bell-like clarity in the mids and trebles. We love this evenness, which makes this an excellent Classical for recording, or the artist who needs the string-to-string balance to be dialed in. Going strong since 1959, this Kono has had a few repairs and is in great playing shape. Indian Rosewood body with Spruce on top, 650mm scale with a Rosewood fingerboard, and a Spanish Cedar neck that features more of a C-shaped profile than the U shape commonly found on nylon string instruments.

A blast from the past which packs a wallop! Our 1964 No. 2 from Masaru Kono (later spelled Kohno) is a keen example of why we love well-preserved old guitars: the voice has opened up completely, and the projection is there in spades.
This Concert Classical is in great working shape considering its age; there’s only the usual play wear across the Indian Rosewood and Spruce typical for a five-decades-old guitar. The bass response is very lively and crisp, and pairs well with the sparkling trebles. Simply appointed, but voiced for articulation and clarity, this Kono No. 2 is a great deal for a vintage classical that’s ready to roll for many more years to come.
