Lehmann Model 2000 Koa/Adirondack Ribbed Back Design
From the Lehmann Website: “Model 2000 is my latest concept in fine guitars for the fingerstylist. It incorporates a ribbed, vaulted back that not only looks stunning, but affects the tone in several positive ways. The volume is increased by focusing the sound towards the soundhole. This in turn lends an amazing clarity of tone, which is ideal for recording and amplification. Thirdly, the projection and carrying power of this instrument are remarkably enhanced by the unique design of the back. The highly arched design of the back makes the guitar very comfortable to hold because the sides are narrowest at the lower boutright where the player’s arm rests. The guitar feels like a thin body instrument, but sacrifices nothing in interior volume. The unique structure of the back provides surprising strength without any bracing being necessary.” We adore this Lehman model 2000, it is crafted from gorgeous Koa and Adirondack Spruce with wonderful adornments such as a fully carved rosette and top trim, intricate fingerboard inlay, slotted headstock, soundport, Ivory accents and of course a vaulted back. The voice is strong, airy and sweet. You can hear Bernie Lehman’s early instruments influence and it makes this a superb fingerstyle guitar and it undoubtably an exquisite and artistic guitar.

From Lehmann Guitars: “The Model Eclipse is patterned after the Selmer Petite Bouche model but with a 21st Century sound. It has remarkable sustain and is able to cut through bricks! The tone of the Model Eclipse is bright and clear, and the volume is guaranteed to please. The sound port opens up the sound of this guitar and lets you hear the instrument better too.” We agree… this is a loud, bright guitar with a genuine 1930s attitude. Gypsy Jazz player extraordinaire Rolly Brown plays a Lehmann and makes it sing. This one is upgrade with Brazilian Rosewood and a gorgeous Adirondack top and outfitted with a pickup so it’s ready for the stage.

Tyler Wells continues to impress! This is the latest model we’ve had the pleasure of offering here at the shop, and we’re frankly on the fence about selling it at all–we just want this one for ourselves. The LHT Fifth is a thin hollowbody with offset F holes/integrated soundports, finished with a hot-under-the-collar black and red sunburst, and simply wired with a Righteous Sounds humbucker. It’s the little details that set this LHT apart from the rest, like the bridge carve with added mass on the bass side, the flawless fit and finish, and most importantly volume and tone knobs that go to eleven. Figured Maple back and sides against a Sitka Spruce top; Mahogany neck plus 24 fret Ebony fingerboard; and a little over five pounds soaking wet.

We are excited to be partnering with the Ukulele Kids Club Inc., along with four outstanding luthiers: Steve Grimes, Jay Lichty, Peter Robson, and Ben Wilborn, as the platform that will sell four one-of-a-kind guitars to help bring the healing power of music to medically fragile children. It is our honor to support the efforts of these altruistic luthiers who have chosen to donate these fine instruments to benefit so many children in need. All partners and luthiers are proud to share that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ukulele Kids Club Inc.
Jay Lichty is a local North Carolina builder who’s been active on the scene for many years. Not only does he build great flattops, he also has a great reputation for his ukuleles. This SJ model has a quick and energetic voice with lovely trebles. Lean in, and it’s got the headroom. Lighter attack? String energy remains crisp and defined. As with all four LFAC guitars, the body is Flame Maple with Sitka Spruce on top, supplied by Steve Grimes.

French builder Bertrand Ligier brings together flawless fit and finish, an eye for the details, and an ear for mixing energy and elegance with this number from 2018. Straight-grain Indian Rosewood back and sides pair up with German Spruce on top (one of our favorite sets we’ve seen in some time), a gorgeously clear French Polish finish throughout, and intricate mosaic rosette for understated good looks. The voice is simply a delight. Lively and energetic strings mix up clearly and dynamically across the registers, with a layer of sweetly cool overtones in the top end that adds a level of bloom and presence to slow passages. We also love the responsiveness of the bass register, which suffuses a warmth across the voice.
Bertrand Ligier’s work is on a top shelf all of its own, reminiscent of both Friederich and Bouchet but all his own. Here’s a great demo performance with our own Andy Jurik putting the 2018 Bertrand Ligier through its paces: https://youtu.be/Wk9r2FskPzU

A piece of resonance history, folks, that’s been around the block a time or two since the 1970s—and it’s still kicking with the best of them. Walter Lipton brought this gorgeous Model C to life all the way back in 1976 with gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Spruce on top, and adorned it with his inlay and marquetry skills, impressive even then. The guitar has certainly been played in and out something fierce, but our repair team has gone over it with their fine-toothed luthier’s comb (available now at StewMac) and made sure everything was stable and shipshape. While they were at it, they refretted the board, so it feels and plays like new, but with the impressive patina of age and hours of use. Lipton’s C is the equivalent of an 0000: lots of bass response and projection, but the trebles really take the cake for their crispness and how easily they cut through the mix.
This is a great opportunity to pick up a piece that others have done the extensive work of playing it in and opening it up. There aren’t many Walter Liptons lying around, and for good reason!

We are lucky to have another amazing guitar to adorn our walls today: a 2007 0000 from Walter Lipton himself! This is the sort of guitar which just begs to be played. First, you are drawn to the gorgeous and interesting Herringbone trim across the European Spruce top and the rosette in alternating bands of black, green, red, and white, Then, when you turn the guitar around, you’ll want to be careful not to let your jaw drop all the way to instrument when you see just how perfectly straight-grained the Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are. Really, take a ruler to those lines; the ruler will look out of square. Add to that a pyramid-style bridge and MOP snowflakes inlaid across the Ebony fretboard, and you’ve got a stunning example of master craftsmanship in your hands. Now: it’s the tone where this guitar really gets to shine. The setup is glossy smooth and perfect for a wide range of applications, but Traditional or Blues arrangements with a thumbpick sound, in particular, reverent. The large body offers powerful projection and sustain, and if you let the harmonics ring in the upper register, you’ll find some sweet overtones that hang in the air for days. When the Brazilian Rosewood and the European Spruce are voiced this well, the guitar exhibits a strong and complex tonality–and Lipton has certainly achieved just that. This is the sort of guitar which plays through you, rather than away from you.

Here we a truly amazing guitar: the 2010 Whyte Laydie Tribute from master luthiers Walter Lipton and Bill Tippin. This joint project celebrates the amazing guitars of its namesake in exquisite detail. Custom etched inlay from Doug Unger adorn this beauty from head to toe and his work is incredibly precise and full of mysteries. A stunning variety of materials were employed to make this one shimmer in an almost iridescent fashion from every angle, but breathtaking looks aside, the tone of this piece is monstrous. Big and lush and full as you would expect from two world class builders working with exhibition grade Brazilian Rosewood that came from the Martin factory many long years ago and a true Master Grade German Spruce top. This is a museum quality piece that is ultimately playable as well. A treasure.

So powerful. Kim Lissarrague fits right in with his Australian contemporaries crafting Classicals that pack heaps of power, projection, and headroom into their builds. The Cedar top is extra thin to help achieve this with a lattice bracing system, as are the sturdy reinforced Ziricote sides and arched Ziricote back. Speaking of which, the figuring on the back here is out of this world! Coming to us from 2021, this Classical is already oh so wide awake.
