2015 Martin D-45E Retro, Indian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
This cannon’s gone electric! Talk about a talkative Dreadnought: we’ve got a 2015 like-new Martin D-45E Retro that’s loud, energetic, with a buttery playability to boot. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides–ditto for the Sitka Spruce top—make for a pretty box all on their own, but then there’s the 45-style Ivoroid and Abalone trim to really set off it off with panache. When you plug this dread in, that’s where a whole new palette of magic unfolds. Martin installed a Fishman Aura VT Enhance on this bad boy, which features a digital acoustic image of several vintage D-45s from Martin’s museum recorded with nine different vintage microphones in Bil Vorndick’s Nashville studio. Run through Fishman’s electronics, the result is a 2015 Martin that, when amplified, sounds like the vintage original. You can easily switch between three different mic blends and the straight pickup tone. So simple, it takes only a moment to dial in the sound you need.
Are you excited yet? Give this D-45E Retro a spin and you won’t be disappointed.Other keywords: C.F. Martin, CF Martin, D45, D 45, 45-style, dreadnaught, abalone, Aura+

A piece of history which gave us goosebumps at first sight: Kevin Odegard’s 1969 Martin D-28, featured on Bob Dylan’s Blood On The Tracks. This was also the last year for such beautiful Brazilian Rosewood to grace a standard D-28, and the decades of playing that Kevin has put it through since have given the Sitka top a well-loved and played-in appearance. We can only guess at how many hours of music this Martin has seen since 1969. The neck feels familiar and intimate with a few faint marks along the back, and the slim 1 11/16” nut makes for quick and easy left hand work. But what really makes us smile? This Martin is still ready for action. Kevin has installed a Fishman Ellipse Blend pickup + mic system, and the setup is dialed in just like a well-oiled tone machine should be. Not only is this D-28 a piece of American history, it’s also a guitar that’s eager to keep singing its heart out. We’re honored Kevin has entrusted a Martin with so much pedigree to our care, and we’re honored to offer it now to you.

Sometimes it’s hard to stand out in the Martin crowd, but with a Custom Shop like this 2013 D-21 spec’d out by George Gruhn we’d say it’s as easy as breathing. Incidentally, that’s also how we’d like to describe the experience of playing this like-new D-21. The setup is slinky and smooth, and responsive enough for fingerpicking when you want to add a different flavor to your playing. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce, and a Spanish Cedar neck outfitted with a true-to-vintage T-bar reinforcement. Flamed Koa bindings and Waverly tuners complete the picture, and hide glue construction keeps this Dreadnought as resonant as possible.
For a guitar in such pristine condition, it’s got quite the opened up voice. We found that the clarity of individual notes, and the articulation between strings and registers, was precise enough to give extra definition to big chords and lead work alike. This Custom Shop D-21 cuts right through the mix, but it plays well with others thanks to a smooth, balanced tone and projection.Other keywords: CF Martin, C.F. If it ain’t broke, why fix it? Martin’s HD-28V is a dreadnought classic that needs no introduction, but this beauty from 1998 isn’t your standard herringbone Martin off the line. This one has been customized with Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, and Adirondack Spruce on top! Add butterbean tuners and a zigzag backstrip to the mix for good measure, and an aged toner top to keep things fresh.
This HD-28V has been played in handsomely since 1998, and has a particularly lively and energetic response. It comes with the original Martin tweed TKL case; not too shabby in our books. And it’s ready for another 20 years of pickin already!

This Martin would have made Jim proud. We’ve seen heaps of Martin signature models over the years, but this 2001 D-21JCB seems to have stolen our hearts in a different way. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce on top, and a 1973-minted dime inlaid into the third fret to memorialize Jim’s passing.
It’s a natural choice for picks, but we were surprised by just how much volume and tone we could coax out of the D-21JCB by fingerpicking. It’s not often we see a Dreadnought lend itself so well to both sides of the aisle. There’s extra juice in the trebles, and it’s a breeze to play. It’s in really stupendous condition, especially considering it’s from 2000.
#52 is waiting for the right person to come along to keep the music going. And it comes, appropriately, in a denim-covered TKL case in a final tip of the hat to Jim.

There might be thousands of Martin OMs singing their hearts out across the world, but there are only 60 60th Anniversary HOM-35s, and only one #60/60. This is the last king of the castle, folks: you won’t find another Martin HOM-35 with Sitka Spruce this tight grained, or Brazilian Rosewood so chocolate rich.
In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of their Orchestra Model, Martin Guitar Company built 60 of these world-class Herringbone OM-35s with great attention to detail and using only the finest tonewoods. As a result of their hard work and dedication, this guitar has an enormous, enveloping voice with a low-end that is total and absolute. Paired with shimmering trebles and subtle overtones, the tone can only be described as majestic.
Fingerstyle arrangements will feel like they were made for this guitar, and the string response is electric quick. A powerhouse in standard tuning, this HOM-35 becomes an entirely different beast in dropped tunings (we found that in DADF#AD this guitar has an even larger voice!), where the string tension of the 14-fret neck comes in handy to keep the guitar intonating cleanly, so you can hear each note as it fills the room. We recommend coming to play this guitar quickly, before it disappears into some lucky player’s hands, or collector’s vault!

A handsome piece of history that’s opened up sweetly, and has been restored to peak playability from the folks at Martin! From the first pluck, we were stunned by the volume, clarity, and sustain of this 1963 Martin D-18. Not only is the setup delightfully easy on the hands, but there’s plenty of meat left on the saddle too. That makes for a better transfer of string energy into the Sitka Spruce top, which in turn cranks up the volume for an edge over your bandmates.
This beauty is a flatpicking machine, with that dry Mahogany crunch and clarity. This ‘63 D-18 has an extra helping of mellow midrange, which sets it apart from a new D-18’s shrillness. Single owner for over 55 years, it’s now finally ready for owner #2. Please note, this guitar comes with the original nut, saddle, bridge, and Grover tuners in the case.

An absolutely wonderful 1888 Martin Style 1-21. All original and it even includes the wooden Coffin Case! This Brazilian Rosewood/Spruce parlor guitar was obviously stored away for most of it’s life. Master Luthier Bill Tippin went over this guitar for us and did a great setup on the bar frets and it plays like a dream. The voice is as big as an OM, just huge like a piano. We all love this little sweetheart. But then we are suckers for a great guitar that’s over 120 years old!

Opened up and broken in: check out our latest vintage D-28. This gem comes to us all the way from 1961, and it’s still in fine working order today. The Brazilian back and sides are nicely quartersawn with black inking and rich clay color, paired with an amber-hued Sitka Spruce top. The soft V neck is slim; coupled with a slick setup this Martin is a breeze to play, and will really belt it out when you dig in.
Our repair team has gone over the guitar and given it a fresh setup and a clean bill of health. There have been a few repairs over the years, but everything’s in great shape and the voice is crisp with a hearty middle register and well-balanced basses and trebles. For this guitar, we have to go back all the way to 1890, when Franz Sulzner ordered a custom 1-26 from the Martin guitar factory. Documented on page 85 of Philip F. Gura’s “C.F. Martin and His Guitars,” this 1-26 appears with a note explaining Sulzner’s connection with the Martin business. This was to be a size 1 guitar, the largest that Martin built in the nineteenth century (“ladies guitars” and smaller came as 2s, 3s, and so on).
While a standard 26 style in many ways, this guitar was customized in the factory per Sulzner’s requests to include an Ivory-bound fretboard and fret markers. The Ivory bindings and “half herringbone” top trim are standard to the 26 style, but to our knowledge no others 26-style guitars from this period feature Ivory bindings across both the body and fretboard. Of course the friction tuning pegs are also Ivory, and the back and sides are Brazilian Rosewood. Adirondack Spruce on top.
Suffice it to say, this 1890 Martin 1-26 has no twin anywhere across the planet: a piece of history in a category to itself.

If we had to limit ourselves to one word to describe this 2016 Martin Custom Shop, we’d use “workhorse.” Dig in with a pick, and there’s heaps of projection, with a woody bass response. Fingerstyle arrangements? There’s an extra helping of articulation and note separation to lend real polyphony to complex chord voicings. Flatpicked fiddle tunes in DADGAD, or a bluesy swing in the style of Lyle Lovett, this 000 does an excellent job of keeping the tone lively and punchy.
Madagascar Rosewood back and sides pair with an Italian Spruce top, with white bindings and 28-style appointments elsewhere. Open back Waverly tuners, Venetian Cutaway, and a short scale neck for an easy playing experience (to say nothing of the smooth, satin-finished neck!).
Martin Custom Shops run the gamut for specs, but they all boast Martin’s finest materials—and this 000 got some extra overtone richness in the trebles and gorgeous sustain.
