1969 was the last year Martin would use Brazilian Rosewood on their standard models, and this D-28 lucked out with a gorgeous set that would be the apple of any luthier’s eye today. Sitka Spruce on top, 28-style appointments, black pickguard, and a 1 11/16 inch nut all make for a good-looking Dread from the sixties with a slick setup. There are only so many Martins from this era that have remained with their original owners, and this is one of the few!
The voice has more balance and note separation than we’d expect from a Dreadnought, and the bass response is also more focused. Combined with extra clarity in the upper mids and trebles, that extra articulation makes for a great guitar for flatpicked solos and lead work. The slim neck also lends itself to fast playing, so if you like to tear it up like Bryan Sutton or Tony Rice this 1969 D-28 is an excellent candidate for the job. Our repair team have gone over every inch and have given it a clean and stable bill of health; plenty of life left to the saddle and the frets are freshly leveled, crowned, and polished.
A great Martin Dread with a vintage, opened up voice that’s less muddy and more articulate.

One of the holy grails of Martin: a 1931 OM-18. Freshly restored to peak playing condition by our very own repair staff, this OM-18 has the voice of a well-seasoned angel over 80 years in the making, but the hot-off-the-presses playability of a new instrument! Weighing in at a lean 3lb 3oz, this OM-18 has an immense voice; the bass is dry and pronounced, and those treble strings crackle with energy.
It’s always a joy when we have the opportunity to bring these vintage gems back into the limelight, and this one is particularly successful crowd pleaser: everyone who lays hands on it has been blown away by the huge, clean tone. It practically plays itself with an impressive responsive and energetic fundamental.

There’s more raw, rich vintage tone wrapped up in this 1950 Martin D-28 than a whole stack of Bluegrass pickers would know what to do with–and that’s an understatement. The bass response is immense but well-focused; pluck the low E string and it cracks like a rifle (a really big, high-caliber rifle). The middle register is warm and equally precise, perfectly separated from trebles which are themselves sweet and articulate, not shrill. We’re looking at a definitive Bluegrass cannon, in all its Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce glory. In pretty good shape for its 66-year-old self, this D-28 is one of the best Dreadnoughts we’ve had through the shop in some time, and thanks to its new neck this 1950 Martin has an adjustable truss rod, so you can be certain it will continue to play powerfully and easily. Set up butter smooth, she practically plays herself. This D-28 comes in a Martin molded plastic hardshell case, but we can also supply the original case if desired.

Widely regarded as the finest year to be a D-28 at the Martin factory, 1937 has been synonymous with the classic Martin Dreadnought sound ever since. So it should come as no surprise that once Martin got into the game of making spec-for-spec recreations of their original vintage instruments that they’d turn to the 1937 D-28 for inspiration. This is one of the original run of 50 D-28 Authentic 1937 guitars built in 2007 with Brazilian Rosewood–and compared to the later Authentic 1937 version with Madagascar Rosewood, the impact of the Brazilian is profound.
Everything about this guitar is period correct, down to the butterbean style tuner knobs. Here’s a short list: forward shifted and hand-scalloped Adirondack Spruce braces, bone nut and saddle, aging toner in the finish to reproduce that vintage yellow, “barrel and heel” neck profile (C at the nut, becoming a soft V at the heel), Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Sprue top, herringbone trim and zigzag back strip. Set up to be the loudest Dreadnought you can imagine, this D-28 Authentic 1937 has an enormous voice, epic sustain, and profoundly rich basses with bell-like trebles. A few minutes with this guitar, and you can tell why the originals are so exceedingly valuable.

1969 was a very good year to be a Martin D-28–this newly restored Dreadnought has miles and miles of sweet tunes behind it, and many miles yet before it. All the superlatives which made Martin guitars legendary–their thunderous projection, warmth, clarity, and depth–are out in full force once you tune this D-28 up to pitch.
Flatpickers! You have no idea how clean and energetic a tone you can get from the Sitka Spruce top on this guitar, almost without trying. If you’re interested in a beautiful piece of guitar history that’s optimized for flatpicking Bluegrass, Blues, and anything in between, we’d recommend taking this Martin for a spin. Brazilian Rosewood was becoming increasingly scarce by 1969, so we were happily surprised to find such an excellent set for the back and sides on this Dread. This is a Dreadnought’s Dreadnought: a 2004 Martin D-41 in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce! In superb condition, this Martin features the D-41 Abalone package, consisting of top trim, rosette, headstock inlay, and fretboard markers. A sharp-dressed guitar for sure, this D-41 has the tone to back up its visual flair, with a huge, rumbling voice that’s rich and opened up.
The bass is 100% Dreadnought with lots of punch and a well-defined edge, and the setup is optimized for flatpicking with a crisp, easy string feel that’s easy on the hands. Putting this guitar through its Bluegrass paces, we found the projection to be fierce without turning into a muddy wash, even when driven hard. The trebles possess a subtle array of overtones that help fill out the voice and lend a little extra color to your solos. Complete with an undersaddle pickup and Martin molded hardshell case, this D-41 is ready for your next gig, or porch session, or airport jam.

We get vintage Martins through our shop all the time, so we’re well-acquanted with that old-school opened-up sound, and there’s a palpable difference compared to newer Martins. This D-45GE, however, offers all the rich, explosive tone of a vintage instrument with only a few years to its name! Modeled after a 1937 D-45 down to the Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides and Adirondack Spruce top, this 2001 D-45GE is a piece-for-piece recreation of one of man’s greatest guitars.
Whether you’re a fingerstylist of a flatpicker, playing Traditional, Bluegrass, or Jazz, this Martin is a finely-honed tool capable of matching you note for note with consistent projection across all six strings. The bass is warm and enveloping, perfectly balanced with the other registers. Under even a delicate touch, this D-45GE lights up like fireworks on July 4th, with sweet treble overtones hanging in the air like smoke from the mortars. In true vintage style, this Martin has a modified “V” neck and a glass-smooth setup for easy playability, and a 1 3/4″ nut.
All of that is to say, this 2001 Martin D-45GE is a marvel of tone, aesthetics, and vintage vibe–the worthy decendent of a living legend.

Adorned with stars across the fretboard and stripes across the three-piece Indian Rosewood back and Sitka Spruce top, this Martin D-76 is number 1,855 of 1,976 guitars that Martin built in commemoration of the United States’ Bicentennial, making this the guitar for the year of 1855 (the last year of the California Gold Rush).

To all you Bluegrass pickers, we apologize: this custom HD-28 from Martin here makes lesser Dreadnoughts sound, well, less. Built to its previous owner’s own specs in 1999, this HD-28 has gorgeous chocolate-dark Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides an Adirondack Spruce top, and is bound up neatly in a herringbone-and-ivoroid binding package. This Dreadnought has been blessed with some fearsome low end growl, and can wind up to a fierce projective force with even a light attack.
By request, Martim finished the Mahogany one-piece neck with a satin finish that feels like velvet to your left hand, and won’t gum up when you really get into that solo at your next session. Practically as clean and unscratched as the day it was finished, this HD-28 is in splendid condition, with miles and miles left in both the saddle and the frets, and comes with a Martin TKL hardshell case to make sure it stays that way.

When dropped into DADGAD or the like, this OMM exudes strength and clarity, with none of the tubbiness in the bass notes that similar guitars struggle against. Whether it’s fingerpicked Irish jigs, English ballads, or American Blues, this Martin offers an excellent separation of notes and hearty sustain. We’re looking at a fingerstylist’s dream Dreadnaught, folks: encompassing sonority with an excellent balance across the strings, and a newly refretted fingerboard (by our own Ken Jones) for a glassy playing experience. Explorations into lowered tunings like DADGAD yield clean, crisp voices–no flat or tubby bass strings on this HD-40. The Italian Spruce and East Indian Rosewood have been thoroughly opened up and played-in by the guitar’s previous owner, giving this Dreadnaught an effortless richness which makes a simple G Major chord sound bigger, fuller, more dynamic. Coupled with a bombproof Fishman Ellipse VT preamp and undersaddle pickup, all that richness translates faithfully into amplified territory. That means these sweet, present trebles won’t be lost in the mix, nor will the expressiveness of the low-end.

Needless to say, this old Martin’s seen a lot of the world since it was first played in 1951, and because of those travels this 000-28 has got some powerful stories to tell. The Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are completely opened up, rendering that strong, vigorous vintage tone which Martin lovers pore through every antique store and pawn shop in search of. This 000-28 has a responsive Spruce top and an agile, energetic voice that really lends itself to American Traditional fingerpicking arrangements, but has plenty of sustain and projection for flatpicking as well.
With the necessary setup work out of the way, this 000-28 is in peak playing condition, meaning that all that rich, explosively opened-up tone can be played with ease. Ready for many more decades of great music, this guitar reminds us what true vintage really sounds like.
