2008 McPherson MG-4.5 Ziricote/Redwood
This 2008 McPherson MG-4.5 sounds great, even when it’s just sitting in its Ameritage case. The folks at McPherson Guitars paired a pretty Ziricote set for the back and sides with a Redwood top, one of our favorite fingerstyle-friendly materials. The result is a voice whose middle register is warm to the touch, but both the bass and treble strings are crisp and present, making this well-balanced for fingerpicked arrangements where you need extra articulation between the strings.
The slim, soft V neck allows for fast and easy fretting, and the cutaway & elevated fingerboard make for easy playability in all the registers! While this guitar is voiced for fingerstyle, we found it responded wonderfully to flatpicks as well, where the projection could really be cranked up a notch or two.

It boasts a strong, robust voice, projecting powerfully, yet smoothly, whether picked or strummed. And with the added sloped cutaway you have full fingerboard access to the upper register!

Joe Mendel has been building excellent instruments for over three decades now, with an impressive and diverse body of work to showcase his mastery of the craft. From Mandolins and Guitars to numerous varieties of Banjos, Joe’s offerings are wide-ranging and eclectic but all share his gift for voicing and his eye for beautiful (sometimes exotic) woods.Take this 12″ Open Back Banjo in Paduak: gorgeous red hues imbue the Paduak neck and rim with a thoughtfulness and sonority that is echoed in the dark, complex tonality of the instrument’s voice.
Let Joe’s ultra smooth neck profile guide your hands into new and exciting tonal territory. Mendel voices his banjos to have an earthy, complex voice, and he achieves that in part by employing more wood components, and this particular batch of Paduak gives this banjo a dynamic, warm, and woody voice, with all the projection we traditionally associate with banjos.

Here’s a great open-back banjo by Joe Mendel of Chesterfield, MO. It features solid Maple (reclaimed from a 100 year old Michigan farmhouse) construction, with and integral tone ring. It’s perfect for clawhammer-style playing, and has excellent projection and sustain, thanks, in part, to the laminated maple neck. It’s a whole lotta banjo for not much scratch!

Here we have a beautiful Mendel octave mandolin in Granadillo and Sitka Spruce. As the name suggests, this wonderful instrument is intended to be tuned an octave below standard mandolin tuning, but is equally happy in alternate tunings. The sound is at once familiar yet refreshing. The unison-string chime of the mandolin family is present, but the strident, higher-pitched wail of the mandolin is replaced with a warmth and intimacy that harkens back to the Old World. And because of the larger air volume within the body, notes ring out and sustain like a church bell. An exquisite instrument that’s different in all the right ways.

Gone before we could even list it! Jim Merrill packs a punch with this 2010 C-18 Dread. Mahogany and Adirondack, quick and punchy and lively, plays like so much butter–it’s like it’s living and breathing in your arms. Jim’s approach is to recreate the prewar ideals in modern form, and to that end we’ve got Adirondack Spruce on top, 18-style appointments, and a sub-four pounds playing weight. This cannon sings.

Our square-shoulder sweetheart goes by the name of Merrill C-28, and brings a deadly set of Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce to the party. Played in and opened up since 2013, this dreadnought has good treble overtones, a crisp attack, and an extra dose of clarity in the mids that a lot of dreads seem to lack. Nickel Waverly tuners keep the weight down (to a scant 4lb 7oz), and the defined V neck is comfy to the touch with a bit of shelf space for your thumb to hang on to.
This Jim Merrill dread is a natural choice for the flatpicking Bluegrass player, but it’s got that extra clarity and punch to also work well for acoustic endeavors a little further afield. Really, this guitar nails it on all the points. With it wrapped up in the included Ameritage hardshell case, you won’t have to worry about harm coming its way—but you may have to watch your friends to make sure they don’t snatch this Merrill for themselves.

Jim Merrill’s guitars often sound more vintage than vintage guitars themselves, and that’s right out the gate. Imagine what these guitars will sound like once they’ve opened up for a few years! The 2005 C-18 we’ve got here is a golden opportunity to see just how much a contemporary instrument can sound like its long-lost prewar cousin.Built sturdily but to lightweight specs, this C-18 comes with Mahogany back and sides for a clean low-end presence and Adirondack Spruce top for a bright, punchy middle register and attack. Not surprisingly, this Dreadnought is built with the Bluegrass player in mind, but thanks to trebles which are well-balanced and a bottom E string that is tight and expressive, the C-18 performs beautifully for fingerpicking passages, as well as lightning flatpick sessions. Overall, the voice is muscular, full of vim and vigor, and the bottom-end has enough warmth to warm you on the coldest winter nights.
