2017 Robbins R.1, Cocobolo/Engelmann Spruce
This 2017 Robbins R.1ca slayed us. Gorgeous Cocobolo back and sides, Engelmann Spruce top, Ebony bindings; that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Tyler garnished the bass lower bout with a bold arm bevel, infused the segmented rosette with Cocobolo, added a Florentine Cutaway, and inlaid the back and endgraft with “sunken” Cocobolo veneers that are below the surface of the surrounding wood and filled in with clear epoxy. The effect is three-dimensional and allows the inset Cocobolo to really pop. The voice: excellent responsiveness, a little crackle in the bass for extra definition, an impressive panoply of overtones in the upper mids and trebles to flesh out chords. Even under a light attack, this R.1ca offers lush notes and heady sustain. To say we’re impressed would be an understatement.

Brand new! And already sold to boot. We simply can’t keep Tyler’s guitars in the shop for longer than it takes to shoot a demo and some photos. This Robbins R.1c is decked out with Chechen back and sides, Italian Spruce on top, and a unique aesthetic package with hexagonal motifs and an arm bevel. 15 7/8” across the lower bout makes this a Grand Auditorium in size, and with the addition of that arm bevel it remains an effortless player. Yes, this beauty is already gone. But the next Robbins will be coming soon! Give us a shout if you would like to be notified when it becomes available.

The magnetism of a Tyler Robbins guitar is such that we can’t keep them in the store long enough to gather a single speck of dust. This gorgeous 2018 R.1c comes to us with Fiddleback Mahogany that rivals Koa for figure. Add an Engelmann Spruce top to the mix, and arm & rib bevels, a 13-fret neck join, stone-and-silver position markers, and a red Calton flight case, and you’ve got the very image of the complete guitar package
The eye-catching Fiddleback Mahogany lends extra crunch and bite to the voice, which really comes out when you dig in with a more aggressive attack, and Tyler’s extensive sustain keeps that woody clarity ringing out for a good, long while. This R.1c plays almost without thought, the setup is so slinky and smooth

A work of art for the hands, eyes, and ears: our 2019 R.1ca from Tyler Robbins is a dream guitar machine. Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, Italian Spruce top, 13 frets to the body, and incredibly precise and dynamic responsiveness for a variety of attacks. We can’t stress enough how potent the experience of playing this guitar was to us; it’s an instrument that makes you forget where you’re at with just one note. The crisp flavor of the bass strings balances perfectly with the articulation and presence of the mids and trebles, be you at standard pitch or drop tuned territory. To match that precision, Tyler adorned the soundboard, headstock, and back with a spread of floral inlays and a jet black arm bevel to tie it all together. Plus this beauty comes wrapped up in a custom Calton flight case, so you’ll never want for protection on those rare moments when you aren’t playing this gorgeous R.1ca from Tyler Robbins.
Please note, we’ve installed an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system to this guitar, which is not featured in the photos or demo.

The first multiscale Robbins R.1c to come through our shop—and we couldn’t be happier. This is a powerhouse with lots of gears, equally at home at concert pitch and C9. Honduran Rosewood back and sides pairs up with German Spruce on top, 26.25-25.5” multiscale fretboard, and Tyler’s latest interrupted, deconstructed rosette design to tie it all together. This is a medium-sized build at 15 7/8” across the lower bout, and we’re impressed by how much bass Tyler was able to inject into the voice; it sings out with the weight and presence of a bigger guitar. The trebles cut through the mix just as easily, and we were frankly hard pressed to find a note that didn’t sound good anywhere along the fretboard. To top it all off, Robbins includes a custom Calton case and Caseadillo case cover to keep this R.1c safe and sound on those rare moments when you aren’t playing it.

This 2020 Robbins comes to us in a smaller, more intimate package—with all the power and dynamism we’ve come to expect from Tyler’s guitars. This is our first R.2ca, a petite 12-fretter with a 15 inch lower bout, boasting twin arm and rib bevels, primo Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and a creamy German Spruce top. Additionally, Tyler adorned this one with a uniquely geometric rosette, florentine cutaway, and silver-trimmed resin position markers. And it all comes wrapped up in a lightweight Hoffee flight case.
The voice is characterized by clear and articulate note definition, and an even decay. We find this translates to a particular clarity when playing swiftly, or with complex chords; notes don’t get lost in a muddle. Rather, this Robbins has a crisp, oh-so-clear voice that’s a delight. We can’t recommend this one more highly than that.Other keywords: lutherie, inlay, luthier, guidry, galloup, resin, pearlescent, fingerstyyle, caltan, gotoh, cutaway, exclusive

Straight from the bench to the 2017 Artisan Guitar Show, then onto Dream Guitars to kick start one of our newest builder relationships–we’ve got our first R.1 from luthier Tyler Robbins! Tyler’s approach marries a fresh, tasteful aesthetic with a pianistic voicing that fingerstylists everywhere will appreciate. This R.1 has a medium-sized body with a 15 7/8″ lower bout and a slightly shallow C profile neck with a glass-smooth playability, which makes for an instrument which is easy on the hands and doesn’t scrimp on projection or sustain.
Robbins picked a dark set of Indian Rosewood for the back and sides (and inlaid the headstock and rosette to match) and paired it with a creamy, tight-grained Engelmann Spruce top for the smooth string-to-string balance that characterizes the R.1’s voice. A 13-fret neck ratchets up the sweetness a pinch, and dropping into DADGAD and beyond that sweetness remained intact, even bloomed. We’re excited to offer this gem for the first time here! We’ll have a blog post coming out soon where Tyler answers some questions about his build process and aesthetics, so be sure to check our blog to keep up.

Jake Robinson is an independent luthier who build his guitars to high standards. He believes, as we do, that when a single set of hands makes every part of a guitar the results are consistent and you get the best quality and tone. This Grand Auditorium from Jake Robinson is spectacular. It reminds us of the some of our other favorite luthiers such as Kathy Wingert, Kevin Ryan and Ervin Somogyi but Jake has his own voice. It’s alive and energetic with sound that seems to swell as is it dances off the German Spruce top that is chock full of medullary rays. The dark chocolate Brazilian Rosewood pushes from behind with sweet midrange and clarity reminiscent of a North Carolina sky. The quality of the setup and fretwork is terrific and makes this one a real joy to play as well.

We are excited to be partnering with the Ukulele Kids Club Inc., along with four outstanding luthiers: Steve Grimes, Jay Lichty, Peter Robson, and Ben Wilborn, as the platform that will sell four one-of-a-kind guitars to help bring the healing power of music to medically fragile children. It is our honor to support the efforts of these altruistic luthiers who have chosen to donate these fine instruments to benefit so many children in need. All partners and luthiers are proud to share that 100% of the proceeds from the sale will benefit the Ukulele Kids Club Inc.
The OM body does it all, and Peter Robson’s OM more than meets the challenge! This midsize flattop handles a range of attacks and styles very well indeed, with some added depth and presence in the lower mids that’s very lovely when tuned down to DADGAD. As with all four LFAC guitars, the body is Flame Maple with Sitka Spruce on top, supplied by Steve Grimes.

This one comes to us from flatpicker extraordinaire Steve Kaufman, as you can tell by his trademark camp bear logo at the 12th fret. This shortscale Rockbridge 000 evokes an earlier era, one where guitars were a little less pristine and fussy and a little more workmanlike. It’s funky and fun and begging to be played with gusto. The gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood gives it a wonderful resonance, and the cedar rounds it out very nicely. For those who appreciate a more broken-in vibe…
Add to CompareNew Thomas Rodriguez 20th Anniversary Classical Brazilian/Sitka
Thomas Rodriguez has been in the business long enough to recognize great opportunities to acquire unique materials when they arise. Twenty years later and he’s amassed a collection of impressive woods, ivories, and pearl–the perfect treasure house from which to build his 20th Anniversary Guitar. The sheer historicity of this guitar’s constituent parts is staggering: woods range from 40-year-old Sitka Spruce to 1800s Brazilian Rosewood salvaged from an old tabletop, or 1800s Honduran Mahogany for the neck from an old four-post bed. Right down to the braces, Sitka harvested from a 1925 Cable piano, or the Ivory tieblock on the bridge (formerly a key from an 1860s square piano), or even the position marker on the fingerboard which Thomas fashioned out of the Mother-Of-Pearl from an 1850s Martin bridge pin encased in a thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish.
The voice of this guitar is at once elegant and exciting, with a mesmerizing clarity that’s colored by a sweet bouquet of overtones from the treble strings. Each string sings like a guitar unto itself, and there’s an almost meditational quality to the smoothness of the voice and the glassy play feel. Just breathing on the strings can excite sustain for days. The bass register appears to defy geometry: how can so much depth come from a regular-sized guitar? Exploring those depths is akin to deep sea diving, while the profound richness is warm and enveloping like blankets of heat from a fireplace whose fire has subsided into the quiet intensity of yellow-red embers.
This is one of Rodriguez’s crowning achievements as a luthier.

Here at Dream Guitars we love guitars with a history of their own, and history is exactly what you’ll find in this brand new Thomas Rodriguez concert. This guitar pulls you in with the allure of a beautiful split-billet Cedar top and its striking three-piece Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (The rosewood being fifty plus year old, from the very same batch as his 100th guitar). The neck is Honduras mahogany from the early 60’s, purchased from an estate, and the nut, saddle, side dots, and tie block are all of fossilized walrus ivory. Tom’s signature asymmetrical lattice bracing gives the hand-split Cedar top’s voice a round, open clarity, allowing every note to be heard distinctly from those surrounding it. The boisterous bass and sweet trebles balance fantastically and we’re excited to offer this guitar we’re sure you’ll play and enjoy for many years to come.
