New Vines Artisan Quilted Sapelle/Western Red Cedar
Here’s a great player from Tony Vines. The Quilted Sapelle is just beautiful and it’s matched with a sweet Cedar top to round out the tone nicely. The multi-part mahogany/maple neck adds another dimension. With this one I particularly enjoyed playing light fingerstyle or digging in for some bluesy vibes, but she also holds up to a vigorous strum. Quite versatile.

This is a very special custom Bella from Tony Vines Guitars. It is crafted from Malaysian Blackwood and premium Lutz Spruce. Lutz Spruce comes from the Kleanza watershed in British Columbia and is a hybridization of Sitka spruce, White spruce and sometimes Engelmann spruce. This unique wood has amazing clarity, warmth and color and features tight, consistent grain. The Malaysian Blackwood here has a natural center strip of sapwood down the back. Add to these stunning woods a carved neck heel, florentie cutaway, full vine inlay and an abalone top border and you have a very special custom Vines guitar. But this one also has a side soundport and a Baggs Dual Source pickup system. Wow!

Here Tony Vines has created a guitar that seems to embody the power of a 000-18 along with the refined fingerstyle sensibilities. Tony has made a name for himself building fine guitars with lovely touches. Here we have stunning figured Beeswing Mahogany, Adirondack Spruce and an armrest bevel to set this guitar apart from the pack. I also love the dramatic headplate and elegant cutaway. Most of all though we love the voice, it’s strong and clear with just a hint of growl when pushed hard. A beautiful Vines guitar.

John Walker was a long time employe of the Gibson Guitar Company, he even helped start the custom shop. From there he went on to help at the Gurian factory, creating many of the pins and purflings you see on the bigger factory made guitars. It is no surprise to us that he builds incredible guitars. This is the Wise River model in Adirondack Spruce and Mahogany. Old Gibson fans are going to love the look, feel and sound of this guitar. It has that classic smooth tone we expect from a slope shoulder dread that we find works well for fingerpicking and strumming.

John Walker builds his guitars in the beautiful state of Montana and names each model for a river or creeks he’s explored since his childhood. It’s clear he loves to build guitars and puts his heart into it. This Lolo Creek model is based on the Gibson 00 designs of the 1920s and 30s. It’s crafted from beautiful Honduras Mahogany and Adirondack Red Spruce for that classic prewar combination. With the full body sunburst it’s a stunning guitar and in excellent condition.

It’s that good. The only way a Kim Walker could sound better to our ears is if it’s had decades of music put through its fibers–and this 2000 Walker SJ A Deluxe has that in spades. Wide awake and oh so expansive. Rich! In a word. But also so clean, clear, and expressive. The Sitka Spruce top has some sweet bearclaw figuring, and pairs perfectly with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Ivoroid bindings, and a delicate vine-and-flower at the headstock. This comes in with Kim’s Deluxe A appointment package, which we love for its understated aesthetic that channels to the timelessness of the classic American flattop in Kim’s own way.

Kim Walker continues to be one of the most sought after modern makers. And why? Because each and every guitar of his contains a heaping spoonful of power, balance, clarity, and dynamic range. This 2012 OM, dressed up with Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce plus Curly Maple bindings, has all of that in spades. The high end has a rich, expressive quality that enriches the whole voice, and the bass is crisp, expansive, but perfectly balanced against the warmth of the midrange. In short, a perfect fingerstyle instrument. With a 25.4″ scale and Adi top, this Walker also has the headroom for flatpicking ands trumming work as well. The Brazilian Rosewood comes from a select stash that Kim acquired from Martin in the early 1970s, making this Walker even more desirable.

It’s guitars like this that get us out of bed in the morning. Kim Walker knows exactly how to get every last ounce out of his guitars. We were happy to take this 2004 SJ A Deluxe—and even happier to send it right on to its new home before we could list it. Flamed Maple back and sides, Bearclaw German Spruce top, a gorgeous light tobacco burst everywhere, and dark green 42-style Abalone trim that’s reminiscent of prewar Martin inlays. The kind of clarity and response that we’ve come to expect from each Kim Walker? This SJ is no exception. The bass retains a clean and enveloping fundamental without overpowering the voice, and we loved the neck carve, a slightly flattened C shape. Gold Waverly tuners and a Calton case don’t hurt, either.

This one won’t be here long. A Kim Walker SJ from 2000 that’s decked out in a dark sunburst, Indian Rosewood back and sides, and a Sitka Spruce top. This Sitka was 25-years-old then, which makes it 45 now! We’ve played several of Kim’s guitars built around this time, and each one had a little something special to the voice (and that’s beyond the already incredible tone we associate with Kim’s work). We love how lively and responsive this one is. It’s lightweight, just over four pounds, and it plays like grass-fed butter. What more can you ask for? Come and get it while you can!

Brick-red Cocobolo back and sides with a Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top that Kim confirmed was part of a series of sets that turned out even better than he had hoped—we’ve seen a few of them and can completely agree. This beauty is from 2001 and has a few marks to prove it’s been an active music maker, and the setup is slinky for just about anything you want to do. Open G? Fantastic. Flatpicking in Standard? Yes-yes-yes. From tuner to tailblock, this Kim Walker SJ Cutaway is a bombshell, one of the best flattops you will ever see or hear.
