2009 Walker OM, Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
If we could play Kim Walker guitars all day, trust us, we would. Kim’s instruments are what we like to call Universal Favorites: there’s enough of a vintage air to appease the staunchest Martin-phile, more than enough clarity and control to make the fingerstylist drool, and a rich resonance and sonority for the guitarist who craves the modern flavor you find from the finest luthiers active today like Ervin Somogyi and Jeff Traugott. Case in point: our 2009 Walker OM in Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce.
Kim’s Mahogany guitars don’t sound like Mahogany guitars. Or rather, they do have the woody crunch and attack of a Mahogany instrument, but somehow Kim fuses that flavor with a bit of the Rosewood propensity for overtones and dark bass. The result is a voice simultaneously sonorous and punchy. Check out the demo for a hint of what we mean by that. The aesthetic is understated, so the natural beauty of Mahogany and Adirondack are on high display here. These unassuming appointments give this Walker OM the character of the quiet kid in the corner whose got the voice of an angel. All you have to do is put pick or fingertip to string, and this OM will sing the pants of a trouser salesman.
Walker has once again closed his waiting list (just too many on the books already!), so this is a rare opportunity for you to snag one of Kim’s maestro works without the ten year waiting list—if it ever opens up again! Lutherie beauty like this won’t linger for long.
This particular Walker OM was used on our own Al Petteway’s recent recording, The Collector’s Passion, track five, “Thumbing It.” Here’s a link to the album: https://www.dreamguitars.com/shop/guitar-accessories/music-cds-and-tabulature/the-collector-s-passion-by-al-petteway-download-mp3.html

Grace, clarity, and definition are the first characteristics that come to mind when playing this 2014 OM from Kim Walker. Individual notes have incredible definition and presence; chords ring out in brilliant acoustic technicolor; balanced across the spectrum. Kim Walker’s guitars are, for us, a gold standard against which to compare other instruments. And of course the materials Kim chose help reinforce that. Top shelf Brazilian Rosewood is paired with a tight-grained Italian Spruce top with a touch of amber color. Abalone appointments (including a flower and vine inlaid at the headstock), Waverly tuners with black pearl knobs. Flawless finish throughout, and a glass-smooth neck to round it out.

Here’s one to write home about. An incredible example of Kim Walker’s work, this 2004 SJ in Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce is just about perfect. Rich, enveloping bass notes balanced against clear treble strings like bells, with an articulate and even-keeled midrange to span the gap. With a 15 7/8” lower bout and 25.4” scale, this Kim Walker has lots of projection for when you need it, but the top is voiced for even a delicate attack to bring out lots of color and musicality. Kim finished this one with a thin varnish finish that keeps the tonewoods as vibrant and resonant as possible—and it shows. Lots of headroom, and the setup is glassy to boot. Playing this Kim Walker SJ is an experience of original inspiration. Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, abalone, maple, waverly, inlay, cedar creek

We’d take this Kim Walker 000 over an ice cream sundae any day of the week—twice as sweet and no risk for cavities. Looking about as pretty as a fresh-minted penny but played in like a 50s silver dollar, this handsomely opened up slice of traditional taste from Kim is a dyed-in-the-wool home wrecker to your current collection. Aged Sitka Spruce top, light caramel-stained Mahogany back and sides, and a dark tortoise-style pickguard with bits of Spruce peaking up through the clear bands in the guard.
The 12-fret neck carve is generously curved in the C persuasion, and the Waverly tuners operate like the well-greased machines they are. While yes, this 12-fret Style C is from 1999, it’s in superb condition with but the faintest of fret wear, great playing action, and heaps of meat left in the saddle. Kim Walker’s guitars almost never crop up on the used market, so when’s the next time you’re like to see a piece of Mahogany and Sitka juicy tone to spare like this? So are you interested yet in the intersection between treble bells and woody bark, a dash of 12-fret richness and a propensity for open tunings? Congratulations: you have arrived at your destination. Don’t forget to breathe when you play this guitar; we don’t want anyone fainting on account of our little ole’ Kim Walker 000.

A 2002 Kim Walker SJ in Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce—need we say more? Kim’s guitars need no introduction, but we can’t help but gush about this one. Heaps of headroom, a bass response you feel all the way in your gut, and yet a voice balanced for fingerstyle, or flat picking, or anything in between. A beautifully inlaid Abalone flower adorns the headstock with a touch of elegance, and the Sitka Spruce top has dramatic bearclaw figure to complete the portrait.
An incredible instrument; it’s an orchestra wrapped up in six strings. We’d recommend taking this one down to DADGAD or beyond (check out the video below where Clive Carroll takes the bess E all the way down to B!) for an experience in baritone growl with standard play feel. The Walker’s rich, dynamic response, regardless of tuning, will keep you playing for long hours. Guitars of this calibre come onto the used market but rarely, and the proof is in the pudding: you won’t want to let this one go.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, waverly, bearclaw sitka, jumbo

Better by far to start your day with a Kim Walker guitar than with coffee. The latter will wake you up, sure, but the former provides a degree of excitement and satisfaction that’ll last a lot longer than a simple caffiene kick. Case in point: this 1998 Kim Walker Jumbo. The last flattop to ever receive Kim’s “Excel” archtop appointments and headstock, Flamed Maple back and sides, German Spruce on top, and about 130% the amount of clarity and projection we’ve come to expect from a Walker. Seriously one of the loudest guitars we’ve had in the shop, and that without losing any clarity and warmth.
Inspirational? In a word. Slim neck profile makes for a slick playability, and it’s in refreshingly pristine shape to boot.

Another legend in the show room! We’ve got a 2003 SJ from Kim Walker in the shop in practically mint condition. Kim Walker’s status as a master among masters is universally known and celebrated, and when this beauty was pulled out of the case, we felt like celebrating, ourselves. This guitar belonged to Jerre Haskew, the former president of Guild Guitars who hired Kim Walker to save the company and pave the way for his own work. The cut of this Brazilian Rosewood is absorbing, with dark chocolatey notes and arrow-straight grain patterns. This, combined with a warm Adirondack Spruce top and Walker’s SJ curves, gives the player a sensation of royalty: the voice is big and brash, and the guitar can handle any style of music with ease. Talk about headroom–this guitar fills the church to the rafters with an energetic and articulate voice! This guitar is a cold drink on a hot day to flatpickers, or a shot of good whiskey for a blues fingerstylist with its vigor and snap. Seriously, folks, just one look at the woods here, and you’ll be hooked. Once you play it, we offer complimentary tissues, should you feel a tear streaking down your cheek. This Walker is a furnace of powerful tones, and it won’t be here long; get a piece of this fire before we pass the torch!

Every time we get one of Kim Walker‘s guitars in the shop, it’s like eating your mother’s cooking again, years after being a kid–and this Walker OM-40 is better than your mom’s chicken noodle soup could ever be. Everything is absolutely perfect, from the tight-grained Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (and paired Brazilian Rosewood binding) to the butter-colored German Spruce and 42-style Abalone inlay, this guitar is the ideal form of Martin’s OM size. Mahogany neck, Ebony fretboard, Walker’s floral headstock inlay and tap-tuned German Spruce top–each component is assembled in perfect harmony. One look and you can’t miss Walker’s unique glossy finishes which help make his guitars amazingly light and responsive. The tone of this instrument is rich and perfectly balanced–the kind of complex, enveloping tonality you’d expect from a 1920’s Martin. But here’s the kicker: this guitar isn’t even a year old. The response is even and finely tuned across all registers, with a razor-sharp pianistic separation of notes. The low-end is clear, the trebles crisp, and the overtones are clean, subtle, and controlled. Truly, there are very few luthiers creating instruments of this calibre in the world today–and almost none are building them as dynamic and powerful as the Walker OM-40.

Kim Walker is a heavy hitter we get incredibly excited about around the Dream Guitars shop. Kim is known for his vintage style guitars with an incredible pre war tone. Kim is a living legend in the Lutherie community, his guitars are as close to perfect as any human is likely to get. This 000 is made with premium East Indian Rosewood and one of the finest sets of Sitka Spruce we have encountered to date. We stopped counting grain lines when we were 200 years in and had gone less than 3.5″ across the top. The silking in this top is practically luminescent, shimmering uniformly across the board. Every detail on this piece is flawlessly executed and Kim even mixes his own varnish recipe for some of the finest finish you’ll ever see on a guitar… ever.
While looks and reputation are important, it’s truly the voice of this thing that sets it apart from the rest and just might shatter your preconceptions of what a good guitar is. It has a warmth and brilliance to it that fascinates and draws you into its sound. It is exceptionally rare to find such a balanced tone, one where every string has a full bodied voice. It’s a pleasure to listen to, even when plucking a single note and just letting it ring. But when you play the strings together, this Walker sounds heavenly, with a ringing chorus of tone that emanates from the sound hole whenever you strike a chord. This is a guitar from one of the big boys, and it lives up to its reputation.

Here we have another incredible instrument from Kim Walker of K.C. Walker Guitars. This one is an SJ, or Small Jumbo, which is a medium body-sized guitar who’s shape is inspired by the Gibson J200 design. Fusing a familiar design with impeccable craftsmanship and the absolute finest woods available, Kim has struck upon what can only be considered the Holy Grail of tone. An absolutely flawless Adirondack Spruce top marries perfectly with the one-of-a-kind, Birdseye Brazilian Rosewood, yielding luscious, sparkling notes that leap from within, dance, and bloom before slowly fading. An inspirational instrument of the highest order.

This is a fine example of Kim Walker’s best work. This is single owner 000 that was custom ordered by a local customer of ours. This Walker guitar is lightly built for a wonderfully vivid response. The slightest touch makes it come alive. The mahogany neck has a very comfortable and soft “V” shape, and the Brazilian sides and back are beautiful and deep with lovely highlights. This guitar is already wonderfully broken in as evident by the way the notes rush out of the guitar, the projection is very strong and balanced. It’s very easy to see why Kim Walker is one of the most highly sought after builders of our time.

The dizzying number of wonderful guitars that we have on our walls might lead some to think that after a while, all these amazing guitars would sound alike. However, when a true heavyweight like the 2004 Walker SJ we have here today enters the fray, there’s just no competition. Kim Walker’s name is synonymous with unparalleled quality and tone–and we’ve got one of his masterpieces in the shop, begging to be played. A stunning Brazilian Rosewood set comprises the back and sides with a richly colored Adirondack Spruce top and Brazilian Rosewood bindings. In Kim’s hands, these woods have been given a rich, powerful voice. The low-end is charged and enveloping, while the trebles have a warm, complex tonality and sweet sustain. When played fingerstyle, the middle registers exhibit a smooth sinuosity and have mellow overtones. Overall, the registers are perfectly–and we mean perfectly–balanced, and the SJ body gives this guitar heaps of projection. Kim’s appointments are graceful, from his contemporary-inflected asymetrical Ebony bridge to the hairline curves of the headstock and the minutely curved body bindings. This is one of the lightest SJs you’ll find, but the build is nevertheless rock solid: this guitar exudes an aura of strength and longevity. If you are at all interested in owning a Walker, give this guitar a look, because let’s face it: they’re very rare, and will only become rarer with time.
