2008 Andrew White F, Indian Rosewood/Cedar
This F from Andrew White is good for whatever ails you. A versatile fingerstyle guitar that also holds up well with a pick, has a slick setup for easy fretting, über cool soundholes and circle inlays, and a soundport—what more could you ask for? The 16 1/4” lower bout adds some extra oomph that makes for impressive projection, even when played lightly. This White has a surprisingly dry voice for a Rosewood/Cedar guitar, but we find that it cuts very well through the mix and has a great string balance that makes it so effective for a multitude of genres.
The quest for the one guitar that’s perfect for every style may never come to an end, but this 2008 Andrew White F comes daringly close to versatility paradise.

We’ve got a livewire in the shop today! A 2008 E Model from Andrew White’s personal bench, this guitar combines contemporary aesthetics with tried-and-true tonewood combinations for a fierce, expressive style. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides? Check. Spruce top? Check. Flawless balance and well-defined bass notes, even in lowered tunings? Check. We could go on, but you get the picture: this Andrew White E Model is a firecracker in the hands of any fingerstylist who needs their instrument to handle the rigors of constantly changing tunings, remain responsive and projective under both light and aggressive attacks, and carry them into amplified territory with aplomb. That last requirement this Model E takes care of handily with an onboard K&K Preamp and Pure Mini pickup (running it through our Humphrey amp, for instance, was a mind-altering exposure to dynamic tones).
Tired of projecting all your sweet tunes out via the soundhole and having none for your own ear? Let the upper bout soundport provide a playback hack to keep you in the loop at all times. With trebles that are this fat and tasty, you’re not going to want to miss a note. Lastly, with an Ameritage hardshell case in which to store this Model E, you can rest easy knowing the no harm can come to this fingerstyle cannoneer when it’s out of your hands (which it won’t be for long).

Another example of why we do this: a custom build with a longtime client and one of our talented builders. This time we spec’d out a Premier model from Peggy White as a full time DADGAD fingerstyle guitar, outfitted with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and Italian Spruce on top. That combination is definitely part of where the glassy top end and chocolate-rich midrange come from, plus Peggy’s chops with the chisel and the rasp. A geometric motif at the rosette offers a fun contrast to the svelte curves of the waist and venetian cutaway, and the very subtle arm bevel at the lower bout.

We’re excited to offer our first Peggy White guitar–so excited we went ahead and sold it before it even arrived! We were able to hold onto it for a few days in order to record and photograph this beauty before sending it on its way to its new home. We also took advantage of the opportunity to put this Premier model through its paces, and it more than met our highest expectations. Peggy was able to pair the dark, somber timbre of African Blackwood with the creamy, transparent tone of an Italian Spruce top–perfect for the fingerstylist with exacting needs for glassy string-to-string separation and voluminous sustain. The precisely balanced voice was a great fit for lowered tunings; all the way into CGD#FA#D.
Peggy is a professional musician, and that’s always a good sign in our book since that pretty much guarantees as a luthier they’ll already possess a finely tuned ear–and Peggy more than lives up to that expectation. Visually, Peggy’s got some exciting tricks up her sleeve, here employing a Kandinsky motif in here rosette, end graft, and backstrip for an effect that’s part homage, part original artistic statement. Are we excited for the next Peggy White to come our way? You can bet your favorite flatpick on it.

Enlarged soundhole plus soundport add to the liveliness and projection, while the Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce combo fills the entire voice with easy richness and clarity. Trebles have a particularly sweet and shimmering quality that draws you in. Ben Wilborn’s 2020 Nautilus model comes to us with high expectations—and more than answers the call. Wilborn has gone back to the drawing board and returned with a whole family of new features for his Nautilus. Here, the traditional soundhole has been kiboshed in favor of an upper bout version which acts as an integrated soundport. This allows Ben to brace the top radially and escape the restrictions of the classic X brace system—the result being added power in the bass register, and exquisite clarity and presence for the mids and trebles (oh, the trebles). Additionally, this allows Ben to use a multiscale setup (here 26-25.4” at our request) that better corresponds to the radial bracing pattern. A slim Ryan-style arm bevel and rib bevel, plus dramatic florentine cutaway, round out the suite of creature comforts. Honduran Mahogany neck with a medium-to-slim C profile feels lovely in hand, old growth Adirondack Spruce from Ben’s premium stash on top—and the pièce de résistance: the best set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides from Ben’s personal primo collection.
The Nautilus is a powerhouse with volumes of tone under the hood, appointed with an understated aesthetic that lets the quality of the materials speak for themselves, and it plays like grass-fed butter.Check out Ben walking through his deflection testing method for tops here: https://youtu.be/m5Epr3U0rDw
Here’s a bit from Ben himself:
“The Nautilus in a mid-sized guitar that changes all the rules. The impetus for this design was the idea that in a traditional X-braced guitar with a centrally located soundhole, approximately one-third of the top is rendered inert due to the demands of the structure required to keep the top from collapsing. The Nautilus, by relocating the soundhole to the upper treble bout, frees up a great deal more real estate for vibration, which after all, is how a guitar amplifies sound. Off-set soundholes are nothing new, but all the previous attempts I have seen fail to fully take advantage of this radical realignment. The Nautilus is not an X-braced guitar, but is instead radially braced, with all the braces arranged like spokes on a wheel, from the bridge outward. Whereas the traditional X locks the the bridge area into a relatively inflexible unit, the radial arrangement allows the bridge much more freedom of movement. The result is a tremendous increase in bass response, a warm and sophisticated top end, and overall greater output of volume. Playing this instrument is a revelation of what potential a guitar possesses.
The Nautilus features a number of modern innovations, all of them critically contributing to a thoroughly and thoughtfully designed whole. Not just a mish-mash of contemporary features, but a through-composed suite of interrelated sonic and ergonomic details.”
