New Brown L-00, Honduran Mahogany/Adirondack Spruce
We’re proud to announce our latest parternship—this time with local luthier Larry Brown—with six incredible guitars from L-00 copies and Dreadnoughts to SJs and Classicals.
This is one of a pair of new L-00 guitars based on 1932 Gibson specs, complete with Honduran Mahogany back and sides and Adirondack Spruce tops and sunburst. The short scale, 14-fret neck is fully adjustable at the heel, meaning you can keep the setup exactly where you want it with just the twist of a screwdriver. Additionally, they feature trapezoidal cross section bracing, but with morticed brace ends and shiplapped x-braces for added strength. Non scalloped bracing, hot hide glue construction, and a period-matching tiger stripe celluloid pickguard. These guitars soak up fingerpicking quite handily, of course for blues but also great for folk or Americana. Warm, thumping bass response is paired with quick, dry trebles and lots of bark.

With enough inlay to satisfy the needs of an entire collection of guitars, this 2011 Presentation Dreadnought from Asheville luthier Larry K. Brown is the very model of intricate, meticulous detail. Brown, famous for his Renaissance period instruments, has built over 1800 instruments, ranging from lutes and cellos to Gibson L-00 copies.
The inlay work which adorns the headstock, fretboard, rosette, bridge, and top features classic motifs of vases and vines, twining and sprawling between fretwire and tuners. With such splendid appointments, it was only natural for Brown to also employ exquisite tonewoods for the body; Carpathian Spruce for the top and Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides. Set up as a vigorous strummer, this Dreadnought is big-voiced and rumbling.

This is the quintessential flatpickers guitar, it has all the growl and power you need to cut through a jam session. Lawrence Brown is a well know lute builder so his chops at building guitars are quite high, and he couldn’t have chosen a better wood combo. He combined Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce here for that clasic pre war sound, with Fossilized Walrus Ivory “Red Eye” bridge pins for a bit of extra flair.

This is another sweet 00-27 from Lawrence Brown, the perfect great blues or old time guitar! Built from Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce that Lawrence acquired from Wayne Henderson’s personal wood stash, this 2011 00–27 boasts some absolutely gorgeous figure in its grains. Brown has given the guitar all the right pre-war mojo from looks to tone, rendering it a perfect replica of that strong vintage voice. Warm but not muddy, bold basses, trebles which sing all on their own–you’ll be hard-pressed to find another 00 that plays this well, with these stellar woods, at this price point.

Lawrence Brown is one of the very few Luthier’s who has built over 1,800 instruments. In addition to fine guitars he has built many Lutes and was on the board of the Lute Society of America. Here we have a 1937 Hauser model built to the exact specs as the famous Hauser played by Segovia. This one features very old Brazilian Rosewood and Carpathian Spruce. The voice is very alive, with great power in the trebles and a lovely G string. The bass notes are clear and vibrant as well. This is one very rewarding concert guitar to hold and to play.

Brand new! This is what happens when a master archtop builder continues to push the envelope: Tad Brown CC Blue. Red Spruce top, Red Maple body, plus a CC Pickups ES250 Charlie Christian pickup and cobalt array, pale Maple bindings with an extra bevelled edge (and a subtle arm bevel introduced into the bindings and top itself at the lower bout); Rosewood appointments throughout; a slim build weight and 1 3/4” nut. The “blue” model designation refers to Tad’s use of lapis lazuli in the finish, resulting in a three-dimensional effect that pulls extra depth out of the Flame Maple body and Adirondack Spruce top.
This time around, Tad spec’d this CC Blue with a tighter lower bout, putting this one at 15 1/2″ across. This makes for an even more easy-playing experience. The neck profile Tad describes as a “slim sportscar neck,” and this one practically drives itself.

Are we excited? That’s an understatement. We’ve just taken on our first archtop from Southern California’s own Tad Brown—and this brand new CC Gold model is a dream come true. Honey amber hues abound with Red Maple back and sides and a Red Spruce top, pale Maple bindings (rounded for such a lovely play feel), and a CC Pickups ES250 Charlie Christian pickup. Slim, slim play weight (just a hair over five pounds, depending on how heavy your strings), combined with those rolled bindings, makes for an effortless player; setup is gossamer from tuner to tail. Rosewood center strip along the back of the neck as a nod to the vintage Charlie Christian ES-175s, and Tad extended that motif for the pickguard, cello bridge, and tailpiece in Rosewood. The ES250 Charlie Christian pickup is strong and crisp when playing electric, and this CC Gold offers a vibrant and balanced acoustic tone as well. One of our favorite Jazz players, Sean McGowan, plays Tad’s instruments—and we can’t think of a finer recommendation than that.

A rare delight which we are so grateful to offer up today: a 2019 Michel Brück Double Top with Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar. The quality of the tonewoods and the fit and finish alone makes for an exquisite instrument. Then there’s the sheer amount of color and dynamism, power and projection, that Brück manages to coax out of the build—that’s what makes this a lifetime instrument. Rodgers tuners add elegance to the aesthetic package, and a slim build weight just over three pounds makes this an effortless guitar to play; and with an elevated fingerboard you’ve got better access to those uppermost frets. Additionally, Brück added side dots at the fifth and seventh frets for creature comfort. This one is in a class all its own.

To borrow an overused expression, this guitar is an inspiration. Leo Buendia is one of our all-time favorite builders, one who we’ve been very fortunate to work with for a number of years now–and no surprise, his instruments continue to humble and delight us every time. This is the first time we’ve had one of his slim 00 models, and we pray that it is not the last. Excellent dynamic range, gorgeously appointed, and outfitted with some of the finest materials on the scene. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides with dramatic figuring and coloration, here paired with Swiss Moonspruce on top and a series of flawlessly executed chip carvings at the rosette, endgraft, and headplate. It’s a fearsome amount of work for just one of these carvings, let alone three. The entire instrument is finished in matte, and makes the grain of the wood pop. Additional features include custom Rodgers tuners with reconstituted malachite buttons, a first for us, offset position markers in Leo’s “stick” style, and even a Brazilian Rosewood bridge. This heirloom instrument was built in 2021, and is essentially new.
