Such a treat to visit with this Parlor model from Michi Matsuda. Not only does Michi manage to build a visually arresting design, he also does so while maintaining utmost attention to the voice of the instrument as well. This is a petite Parlor that very much punches up above its weight. The trebles in particular have real strength to them that grabbed us right out the gate. Michi’s inventive flair manifests here with tightly figured Bubinga back and sides, Bearclaw Spruce top, an elevated fingerboard, and one of this two-tone bridges comprised of a Rosewood-Ebony laminate. All this culminates at the headstock rendered in a stair-step pattern that’s reminscent to our eye of a Stauffer style headstock with the tuners along the bass side. All told, this 2015 Parlor from Michi Matsuda is a captivating example of when the bleeding edge of modern lutherie works–one-of-a-kind, powerful, and clear.

We commissioned this build on behalf of one of our clients (give us a shout if you’d like a bespoke Matsuda of your own), who loved Michi’s Deconstruction aesthetics but wanted to take it in a new direction. Enter: the Double Neck Deconstruction. Two necks designed with two playing styles in mind, the bottom set up for plucking and strumming, the top for tapping. Additionally, the bottom neck features a custom cittern-style bridge, whereas the top neck is outfitted with a hinged string damper at the nut. The assembled body of the instrument is decoupled from the acoustic top to allow it to vibrate freely, and an array of pickups across the arrangement allow for a wide range of setups heading out to the amp.

I was born and raised in Japan. I have liked music, guitars, and making something by hand, since a young age. It seems that it was natural for me to get in guitar making, though I didn’t know about fine woodworking.
After finishing an apprenticeship with master luthier Ervin Somogyi. I started my luthier studio here in the San Francisco Bay Area.
Following my apprenticeship, I studied guitar repair with renowned instrument repairman Frank Ford of Gryphon Stringed Instruments, where I am currently a member of the repair staff.
Tradition, Creativity, Identity.
They are always my focus in my guitar making. It is my challenge to find something new among them in the form of guitars.
Sound is important, but it is only a part of the entire relationship with you and guitars, also me and guitars. It can be mental, it can be physical, it can be intellectual. it is fluid, yet simple.
Therefore, each of guitars I make is unique, personal, and individual.
I want Matsuda guitars to be more than just tools for music. I would be happy if you find a meaningful experience with the guitars I make.
