Inspiration made of out wood and steel. This 2017 Buendia OM Cutaway is a dream-come-true kind of guitar: African Blackwood back and sides, Swiss Alpine Spruce on top, exquisite string-to-string balance, sweetly easy playability; an effortless guitar. We simply love Leo’s work! This OM is well balanced to a fault, with a well-tempered bass response and liquid trebles. Brazilian Rosewood bridge, K&K Pure Mini pickup, and a Hoffee flight case round it all out.

Here’s a pretty piece that’s just as easy on the hands and ears! This 2017 Taylor Custom GA came out of Taylor’s Build To Order program, and is here outfitted with gorgeous Amazon Rosewood (which Taylor no longer works with, so this beauty is a unique one) back and sides and a rich Redwood top. Gold Gotoh tuners and a K&K Pure Mini pickup, plus the famous Taylor setup, come together for a smooth, smooth, smooth guitar experience. We love the satin neck; never sticky, no matter how sweaty the hands! And the Amazon RW combines with Redwood for a clean, balanced voice that’s characterized by warmth and articulation.

Silk-tongued with full bodied projection and range: our 2018 Baranik Meridian Concert. We love the lively, energetic response of the trebles, especially how well they pair with the mids and glassy bottom end. With Mike’s adjustable neck pocket, this Baranik is only ever a turn of an allen key away from perfect playability—and boy does it play sweetly. This Meridian straddles the line between fingerstyle and flatpicking exceedingly well; we really can’t decide which approach we like more.
Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (check out the sapwood center!), Colorado Blue Spruce on top with Snakewood bindings and striking blue appointments. Gotoh tuners, Ameritage case, and a well-rounded neck carve that’s glassy in hand.

You don’t mess around with Jim, indeed. This 2000 Martin D-21JCB Jim Croce is a fundamental powerhouse Dread, dressed up in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce with a 1973 dime inlaid at the third fret. The neck is a slim number with a 1 11/16” nut, plays fantastically, and is an easy fit for the left hand. Nickel Grover tuners up top, and black bindings to pair up with matching bridge pins and pickguard. This beauty is a natural choice for the singer-songwriter, but is more than up to the task of keeping up with the Bluegrass session to boot!

Step in before this one steps out! We just landed a nearly new 2018 Dreadnought from the one and only Wayne Henderson that’s packing serious tonewood power. Jaw droopingly beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are here paired with a shaded Appalachian Spruce top in herringbone trim. Soft V neck, great setup, and weighing in at a trim 4lbs 3oz, this Henderson is an effortless player, and has a sweet midrange to tie the bass and trebles together.

Our last L-02 from Kevin Kopp sold in a heartbeat, but here’s the latest one up for grabs! This beauty has the classic combo of Mahogany and torrefied Adirondack Spruce and tiger stripe pickguard. Lots of blues grumble and crack! Super fun from tuner to tail. Short scale with a chunky neck to boot; we simply love the Kopp L-02T. We’ve discounted this one for a few finish checks on top–100% Kopp tone, brand new, at an attractive price!

The voice of this petite parlor-size piece from Fylde Guitars is a heady brew—the whisky stave Single Malt. Nearly new from 2019, our Fylde is made from Reclaimed Oak and Oregon Pine, and is an excellent pairing with fingerpicking tunesters. 12 frets to the body with a rounded V profile, slotted headstock. Zero fret, Gotoh tuners, and all wrapped up in a Hiscox flight case.

The Dudenbostel abides. We’ve landed a powerhouse 2018 OM from Lynn Dudenbostel that’s a bombshell to the eyes, and a cannon to the ears. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are paired with an Adirondack Spruce top, herringbone trim, and a vintage-style V neck that’s glossy smooth to the touch. This beauty weighs in at a scant 4lbs, and has a sweet dynamic range that works well for both flatpicking and fingerstyle. Ivoroid bindings, Waverly tuners, and a classic bone through saddle round out the image of the classic OM—and this Dudenbostel has an expressive and lively voice to make it oh so hard to put down.

The Casimi duo of Matthias and Matthew are at the top of our short list of favorite builders. Each C2S we commission is an heirloom instrument, the kind of guitar that humbles the senses. This C2S is a dream. African Blackwood back and sides with Alpine Moonpspruce top, twin arm and rib bevels plus cutaway and 12-fret neck; Koa trim and soundport–26-25″ multiscale setup. The soundhole is ringed in with an exquisite bespoke rosette homaging South African painter Jacobus Pierneef, which is also echoed at the back inlay as a conversation between geometric and pastoral forms.

From venerable luthier and classical guitarist Steven Walter, we’ve got a special Millennium model in the shop today that is an absolute delight. This 2011 Millennium was Steven’s personal guitar for several years, and has the rich and opened up voice to prove it. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides over Redwood, an elevated fingerboard in Thomas Humphrey’s style, fan bracing up top and twin soundports flanking the neck heel. 650mm scale and a medium thickness neck; weighs in under four pounds; responsive to a range of attacks and articulate to a fault.

The folks at the Heritage Guitar Company have been hard at work in the old Gibson buildings of Kalamazoo for decades now, building incredible electrics and archtops to compete with the best out there. We recently landed a 2011 Super KB (Kenny Burrell) that is a 100% testament to that statement: this guitar is a fabulous example of Maple, Spruce, and sweet, sweet Jazz tone. Twin humbucking pickups, 18 inches across the expansive lower bout, and a sharp Florentine Cutaway come together in a tasteful, natural finish package. Carved Spruce top with parallel bracing is paired with nicely figured Maple back and sides (and neck, and pickguard) and adjustable finger tailpiece.
These beauties are built in very limited batches, and this is the first time we’ve seen one in a while. Snag it while you can!

2012 Super Eagle from the fine folks at Heritage Guitars—yes, please! This is a dynamite jazz box that’ll handle rock and blues with aplomb. Maple back and sides paired with a carved Spruce top, humbuckers, and Bigsby tailpiece for all the warbling vibrato and dive bombs you can shake a pick at. This Super Eagle is a big boy, make no mistake: 18 inches at the lower bout—and that translates to a big voice with sweet resonance for all the registers. In great shape from toe to tip, this Heritage Super Eagle is itching to keep crooning; snag it while you can!

A lovely homage to the Jimmy D’Aquisto’s interpretation of the original John D’Angelico teardrop guitar, commissioned by Pete Girardi in 1957. This beauty is a reissue authorized by the estate of the D’Aquisto family, carried out by the Japanese Terada workshop in 2005. Flame Maple back and sides paired with a boomatched Sitka Spruce top (X braced), expansive 17 3/8” lower bout, and the iconic teardrop fin to make the length of the body an impressive 26 inches. Maple bindings, Gotoh tuners, and Jimmy’s “Accutone” bridge design, which incorporates an Ebony wedge as the means to adjust the string height. The result being that string vibrations transmit directly from wood to wood to wood, rather than losing tone and definition through metal posts and thumbwheels. This Teardrop Reissue is in fabulous condition, and is ready for action. Comes wrapped up in a custom hardshell case—a real necessity given these extravagant curves!

Beautiful, that’s the word. This 2005 Froggy Bottom P14 in Madagascar Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce is simply beautiful, to both the ear and eye, even hand. Short scale with 14 frets to the body, Maple bindings and herringbone trim—and a rich, easy voice to boot. The heelcap features a scrimshawed flower, and this Froggy Bottom is in stellar condition, especially considering it’s fifteen years old!

This Martin Custom Shop 000 has something to say. Striking Ziricote back and sides pair sweetly with an Alpine Italian Spruce top for crisp trebles and a well-tempered midrange and bass response; the recipe for a top notch fingerstyle guitar. The 000’s short 24.9” scale, here on a 14-fret frame, gives a touch more sweetness and roundness to the trebles. The Spruce top is trimmed out in Abalone with a 45-style rosette to boot, and at the headstock the Custom Shop installed a gorgeous alternate torch in Abalone, nestled between gold Schaller GrandTune tuners. Pyramid bridge in Ebony, and pale Maple bindings round out the image of this 2019 Martin Custom Shop 000 as a beautiful instrument for both the eyes and the ears.

A fun one that’s opened up handsomely! We’ve landed a 2008 Bourgeois Vintage D that’s got some real horsepower under the hood. Indian Rosewood back and sides with Adirondack Spruce on top, and a voice that’s been broken in over the past 11 years and is singing oh so proudly. We really dig the dynamic range here: playing softly there is a sweetness; played with gusto and the projection swells and fills the space. There’s a breathiness to the voice that only comes once a guitar has been played in for a period of time, and this Vintage D has that for sure. Waverly tuners, Ivoroid bindings, and 28-style diamond inlays round out the package on this powerhouse Bourgeois Dreadnought.

Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, bourgeois guitars, bluegrass, dreadnaught, herringbone, tkl

A custom piece from Dana Bourgeois’s fine team! This SJ Custom is a charmer in Madagascar Rosewood and Redwood from 2011, with 14 frets to the neck, Waverly tuners (plus Snakewood buttons), and hide glue construction throughout. The voice is characterized by an even response from bass to treble, with an added touch of warm sustain to the trebles. Definitely a fingerpicker’s guitar, with 14 frets to the body and a short 25 inch scale this Bourgeois plays oh so easily, and we found it took to Open D and Open G as easy as breathing.

Jim Olson is at the top of his game, and playing this Tree Olson is like standing on top of a mountain—but much, much warmer. We love just how warm, responsive, and enveloping this 2018 Olson SJ plays. And why be surprised? Highly figured The Tree Mahogany back and sides with a pale Cedar top—of course it’s going to sing like a blazing fire. Individual note definition comes with a whole host of rich, velvety overtones. Built only yesterday in 2018, this Olson is basically new, plays like a dream, and boasts intricate floral and thorn inlays along the fretboard from the inimitable Larry Robinson. An honest-to-god collector’s passion.

A guitar for every occasion. This 2011 RGC6 from Del Langejans is a robustly dynamic instrument that performs equally well for fingerpicking as for strumming, amplified with an L.R. Baggs Anthem system or acoustically. Rosewood neck pairs with an Indian Rosewood body and Port Orford Cedar top, plus pale Maple bindings to round it all out. Zero fret, gold Gotoh tuners, and a Venetian Cutaway to boot! This beauty comes wrapped up in a well-fitted Cedar Creek case, and it’s raring to go.

Bearclaw Sitka Spruce over Indian Rosewood, L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup, and Maple bindings—our 2005 R6 from Del Langejans is ready for just about anything. Florentine Cutaway for keeping those uppermost frets dust free, and a medium thickness C neck that feels easy on the hands. The voice is well balanced for the player who mixes and matches between fingerpicking and strumming, and we found it handled D tunings well to boot. Wrapped up in a Cedar Creek case for stylish safe keeping.

Other keywords: flat picking, flatpicking, lutherie, luthier, guitarbuilding, langejans guitar

Famed electric guitar builder Scott Walker also has a softer, warmer side: in 2017 he built a run of Weissenborns like this Mahogany beauty—easy on the eyes and the hands (and the bar!). 25 inch scale with Graphtech tuners, tortoise-style bindings, and a warm, enveloping voice. We loved playing this Walker Weissenborn in Open D and Open G. Weighing in at a slim 3.5lbs, this is a featherweight in your lap that contains a big voice.

Other keywords: lap steel, lapsteel, slide guitar, weisenborn, fingerpicking, open tuning, mahagony

Well lookie here! We’ve landed a dream machine of a guitar from the hands of one of America’s finest: Tom Ribbecke and his Testadura MK model. Tight fiddleback Maple back, Indian Rosewood sides, and Sitka Spruce on top of this hollow body/semi-hollow (more on that duality later) guitar—done up in a striking blue hue that sets off the gold hardware and Koa bindings. Single humbucker with volume and tone knobs built into the underside of the Ebony pickguard, upper bout soundhole, weighs in at 7lbs 5oz. This 2019 Testadura MK features one of Tom’s unique additions to the electric world: an internal system to switch between a 330 and 335, or hollow body and semi-hollow respectively. There’s a small block, shaped in a subtle wedge, that can be easily installed through the pickup cavity and a custom tool (we’ve got one here with the guitar, no worries) which pulls the block into place inside the guitar, effectively coupling the back and top and creating a semi-hollow.

Warm like whiskey in your belly. Check out this 2012 Bourgeois Custom OMS if you’re looking for a resonant, warm fingerstyle guitar. Gorgeous Flamed Koa back and sides, combined with a Redwood top, make for lots of resonance and overtones. Slotted headstock with Waverly tuners, MOP inlays along the fretboard and Abalone top trim. Cocobolo Rosewood bindings round out the image. We found this Bourgeois soaked up open tunings handily; it was easy to lose track of time once it really gets going.

From inlay phenom and luthier maestro Harvey Leach, we’ve got a gorgeous Cremona model from 2002 decked out with sweet woods and a sprawling series of tiger inlays. Flamed Koa back and sides pair with a Flamed Millennium Redwood top for a unique combination of dry, punchy trebles and a warm midrange. Starting at the headstock, continuing along the fretboard, and finally terminating at the end graft are four tiger inlays—the stripes of which set off the wavy figure of the Redwood top to a T. Abalone trim along the top bindings, gold Grover tuners, and a slim, just over four pounds playing weight complete the package.
