1978 Gibson Johnny Smith Maple/Spruce
Here we have a remarkably pristine 1978 Gibson Johnny Smith archtop that looks as though it never left the case. It was hardly ever played and looks one year old, not decades old. It’s wide body is beloved by jazz players for it’s full, rounded tone, and the playability of the neck is exceptional. Add to that the single cutaway, incredible sunburst, and art deco styling, and you’ve got the flagship of the vintage Gibson archtop line.

Few guitars can match the Gibson ES-335 for sheer star power. It’s been seen in the hands of guitarists as diverse as Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, B. B. King and session legend, Larry Carlton (who has his own 335 Signature model). This 2005 Gibson ES-335 was owned by jazz player Ted Shumate, so it’s was selected by a pro for it’s tone, it’s one of the good ones! Kept in great condition and recently setup by John Buscarino, this is not your average 335!
Add to Compare1962 Gibson Barney Kessel Maple/Spruce
There’s a lot to like about this 1962 Gibson Barney Kessel model. Its famous namesake was of course one of the most highly regarded jazz guitarists of his era – playing on countless recordings by the very biggest names in the business – including Oscar Peterson, Sonny Rollins, Milt Jackson – and countless others.
The Kessel model is a nice jazz box with a slim neck and super fast action. It can get a wide range of tones from its humbuckers, but to our ears it fares best when played on the clean side. That said, a bit of overdrive sounds really great with this vintage beauty too. Its attractive double Florentine cutaway shape is finished in a very pretty cherry sunburst.

Here’s another guitar that is nearly impossible to stop playing! Talk about fun! The Gibson ES-150 is a great vintage instrument, and a wonderful value too. This fine guitar plays great and was maintained by a professional luthier for many years. The superb P-90 neck pickup sounds great when banging out chunky jazz chords, and has excellent mid-range qualities to make single line playing leap out from the bandstand. For years ES-150 (Electric Spanish) was Charlie Christians guitar of choice.

This is a Custom Shop Gibson L-4 CES Archtop guitar. These are made from solid Mahogany for the body and carved Spruce top. This example from 2005 is near mint and obviously well cared for. The setup is perfect and it plays fast and easy. The acoustic voice is lively and plugged in it’s full and fat. A great Gibson design.

Here’s a wonderfully preserved 1939 Gibson L-30 Archtop. This vintage, pre-war Gibson is a blast to play. It’s a small body, but has a big voice. It sounds right at home for Jazz, fingerstyle blues or ragtime. It appears to be all original and everything is in perfect order with great playability up the entire fingerboard. Everybody in the shop wants this one so come and get it to save us the employee discount.

From the year 1919 we bring bring you this vintage Gibson L-1 Archtop. This model was built from 1902 through 1925. It is a simply appointed model, but we all love this one. The trebles strings just soar out of the round soundhole. It’s a very fun guitar to play leads on. Of course it has a great chord chunking sound as well and lots of vintage Gibson vibe. The condition is really great for it’s age and it’s solid and ready to play for many more years.

This vintage 1950 Gibson L-48 Archtop feels like an old friend. It’s just comfortable like an old pair of Levi’s. This model came in a few wood combinations, this one is Mahogany on top with Maple back and sides with that gorgeous Gibson Sunburst aged to perfection. There is of course normal finish checking and play wear that show it knows how to make music, and make music it will. This one plays great, fast and easy and will surely outlive most of us mere mortals.

This is the Custom Shop 1959 ES-335 DOT Reissue VOS Limited Edition. Not to be confused with other ’59 Reissues, this is one of 250 Limited Edition sunbursts ever made with the VOS treatment from Gibson. VOS guitars have a aged look and feel thanks to the satin finish, brushed pickup covers and bridge, etc It looks it’s reissue ‘age’ of 50+ years old, but of course is in mint condition. This guitar was actually made in the same molds as the original ’59 was. This is the finest reissue version of the 1959 ES-335 you will find. The MSRP on this model is $5649. From the Gibson webpage: This limited production model from Gibson Custom captures this desirable classic in greater detail than any ‘reissue’-style guitar previously produced. It is truly an instrument born in the image of its inspiration. Starting with the traditional plain laminated maple top, back and sides, with single-ply creme binding on both the top and back, the 1959 ES-335 Dot Reissue is true to the original’s ’59 specs in almost every detail. Its one-piece, 24-1/2″ inch scale length mahogany neck features a long tenon, a 22-fret Madagascar rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays and a rounded ’59 neck profile. In addition to its period-correct look, the 1959 ES-335 Dot Reissue recreates the legendary tone of the original model by utilizing a pair of Gibson’s renowned ’57 Classic humbucking pickups, which is the closest thing to original ‘PAF’ pickups on the market today. Here’s a vintage Gibson Super 400CES from 1968, the last year of the split block Fret Markers. This one is completely original but for the pickguard and updated bridge and the original parts are in the case. The big 18″ body of the Super 400 is the secret to it’s bold and powerful sound. Lloyd Loar brought several innovations to the Gibson product line, including f-hole, longitudinal tone bars, graduated tops and backs, longer playable necks, and resonance tuning. The Historic Reissue 1934 L-5 accurately recreates one of Lloyd Loar’s crowning achievements. Many feel this model is the single most elegant guitar Gibson ever designed.

This rare Byrdland comes from 1960, the first year they introduced the pointed Florentine cutaway. This blonde beauty is in great condition, the setup on this guitar is perfect and it plays like a dream. The Byrdland designs features a short 23.5″ scale which makes for easy reach and joyful bending. This one has that distinctive Byrdland sound and Al and I both love it.

Just over 200 Super 300s were ever made by Gibson Guitars. The Super 300 is essentially identical to a super 400 but a bit more understated with regard to trim. This beauty from 1950 is in excellent condition and the tone is magical. You can just imagine some of the juke joints it’s been in. The tobacco burst is warm and inviting and the maple back has nice figure as does the tiger striped neck. The neck finish is worn to that perfect feel of a vintage guitar with just enough miles on it. Outstanding…
