2001 Kauffman Parlor, Brazilian Rosewood/Sitka Spruce
Now here’s a sweet piece of lutherie from 2001—Steve Kauffman’s (of Klein Guitars fame) Parlor model in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. What a gem, a beautiful small-bodied guitar, we’re conflicted about even offering it for sale. Steve’s fit and finish its flawless, and while this guitar has definite nods to Klein acoustics, he’s got his own style on showcase here. Slotted headstock with 12-fret neck (a Brazilian Rosewood neck, no less!) and long scale setup makes for the perfect combination of sweetness and power. We’re particularly impressed by the clarity and definition of the bass register, given the slim Parlor dimensions. This beauty has been well cared for and is in peak playing condition today, two decades later.

The back and sides are myrtlewood, the top made of redwood, and a rosewood neck; Oh and there are six extra strings?

The Petite is a 12-fret parlor body plus cutaway, here rendered with Ebony bindings, an elliptical rosette of Spalted Maple, and a slotted headstock (with Schertler tuners) for a lightweight and responsive build. Under four pounds, This Kazourian Petite plays very easily in hand or on your leg, and the 24 1/2” scale is very easy on the lefthand. The use of Gold EVO frets here means this parlor won’t need any fret work for a long time (and they look great against the Ebony fretboard and black Mahogany neck).

Danish luthier Ole Kehlet says, “As a luthier, my intention is to create guitars which fulfill the dreams of the artists who play them. My job is to turn dreams into reality. I believe life is much too short to create anything but the ultimate. Kehlet Guitars start where your dreams begin.” This gorgeous Finn Olafsson Signature Model is a great embodiment of that sentiment. It has a neck that is perfect for fingerstylists, and a mellifluous voice with a lively response and precise trebles. With its wide dynamic range and extra headroom, this guitar is a great fit for almost any genre. The body is Ziricote and European Spruce bound in lovely Curly Maple with distinctive rope style purflings.
Gorgeous is the first word that comes to mind, and that counts for both Kehlet’s visual aesthetic and his voice–this Olafsson Signature is a sack of dynamite with strings just ready to explode in full technicolor.

Now here’s a fun one that’s in a category all its own: Martin Keith’s hybrid Auriole model, here in Macassar Ebony and Redwood. This one, dubbed “Old Soul,” comes to us from 2013 in primo condition with Martin’s smoothly engineered adjustable neck, zero fret, and carbon fiber reinforcements. Additionally, this Auriole has a K&K Pure Mini pickup installed, here with an 1/8” vintage jack (adapter included). In particular, this Redwood is from Martin’s personal stash of Redwood salvaged from a late 19th century West Coast railroad. The upper register is particularly crisp and present, and balances well with the bass and mids for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. The unique combination of a floating bridge in a flattop design adds clarity and sustain to the bass register, and the offset soundhole gives the player a touch more in their own ear.

Firecracker-crisp, proven to be louder than your brother-in-law’s howls at football night, and a smooth playability that adjust on-the-fly: yeah, our latest OM from Martin Keith can show you how it’s done. The curly Honduran Mahogany back and sides is so figured as to put your favorite Maple sets to shame, and a tight-grained Adirondack Spruce top seals the deal. Then, Martin’s adjustable neck pocket takes this guitar to a whole new level: with one twist of an allen wrench (accessible just below the heelcap), you can easily raise or lower the action to suit your playing needs—crank it up a notch for digging in with picks, then coax it down quick and slick for a fingerstyle arrangement in DADGAD.
Keith’s fit and finish more than meets muster, and his aesthetic flair is contemporary without being distracting. Trimmed in Ebony, featuring a zero nut and EVO frets, weighing in at only 4.5lbs: this Keith OM kills it from genre to genre like Manny Pacquiao boxes through title fight after title fight.

Looking to build an alternative to modern 6 string flattops, Martin Keith took his years’ experience working with Joe Veillette’s shop and applied it to a synthesis of flattop and archtop design: the Auriole. These are big guitars with a great, balanced tone and crisp articulation. Keith achieves this with a wide fan braced Sitka Spruce top, radial braced Curly Maple back, and a Mahogany neck with carbon fiber core (rendering the neck sturdy and lightweight). Add to that a zero fret on the Katalox fretboard and a fully adjustable neck, courtesy of the included allen key, and you have a robust instrument capable of performing equally well in a variety of applications. The Auriole is definitely a flatpicker’s heartthrob.

Consistency of tone and even response: this 2009 Kelday OM has both in spades. Bringing together some gorgeous Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar, William Kelday offers us powerful proof that the OM-size guitar is still an amazing instrument. Fingerstyle or flatpicks, this Kelday feels familiar and easy with a 25.4″ scale and 1 13/16″ nut for deft left hand work.
The trebles have this quick, crisp response that livens up the entire voice, and the woody warmth of the bass and middle registers can be found in a variety of tunings–only so many guitars sound really good in C tunings, and this Kelday is definitely one! We’d recommend this guitar for pretty much any guitarist, but especially for the player who likes to switch between tunings, fingers, and picks without having to carry a trunk full of instrument cases around.

Bill Kelday is all about tone and so is this fine OM. It has amazing balance and power to spare. Its voice clearly harkens back to the prewar Martin guitars but there’s something more there, an intangible beauty that is all Kelday. The dark, rich Brazilian Rosewood can be felt in the bass and the full, clear trebles. The spruce top offers up unending power. The sustain is lovely and the playability is perfect. I really like the versatility of this OM it seems to be happy playing anything you throw at it from Celtic to Blues and beyond. This is one of a quartet of guitars he made for the Healdsburg Guitar Festival.

From longtime luthier Michael Keller, we’ve got a dynamite 12-String guitar in the shop from 2012 in Indian Rosewood and Spruce. This beauty takes the cake for clarity and dynamism on the 12-string front; here there’s none of the tinny jangle that’s given them a bad rep, just meaty, powerful tone. Additionally, Michael added an arm bevel for creature comfort, and a soundport to the upper bout to keep the player dialed in to their sound, plus a sharp florentine cutaway for getting to those pesky uppermost frets. The neck-to-body weight ratio is excellent by normal standards, even better so for a 12-string. We found playing this Keller 12 was very easy, and we didn’t have to waste precious left hand energy holding up the neck.

Brand spankin’ new but already explosively loud and rich, this 2016 SJ from Michael Keller is the new kid on the block at DG, and everyone wants to be his friend. One of our Dream Series guitars, this “Rose“ was made with one of Paul’s personal sets of Brazilian Rosewood (and what a set it is, chocolate-dark and straight-grained) and an Adirondack Spruce top–a deadly combination in Keller’s SJ body. With the added soundport, all the Brazilian richness is broadcasted straight to the player’s ear, while the balanced and crisp trebles help round out the guitar’s voice, itself even and articulate.
The setup is glass-smooth and low for fingerstylists, and this Keller SJ handles D tunings like a champ, and as it continues to open up it’s going to sound even better (if you could believe it)!

2005 must have been a good year for Michael Keller, because this 2005 Jumbo with flamed Koa and Engelmann Spruce is a firecracker (or should we say mortar shell?) of a guitar! The bass is pronounced, but with a well-defined edge that keeps this Jumbo from sounding muddy, and the trebles are strong without being shrill, which allow this guitar to work well for both fingerstyle and flatpicking approaches, and performs best with a medium to aggressive attack to really set the Engelmann Spruce top singing.
With the added soundport on the upper bout, this Keller’s huge voice is also directed straight to your ear to make this a great choice for loud venues or sessions–not to mention the pride you’ll feel as you show off the well-executed Abalone inlay across the body and neck. For a player seeking a slim nut, this Jumbo offers that in combination with a low/medium C profile neck for comfortable fretting work, and the setup is glass-smooth. Michael Keller’s one of the greats when it comes to Jumbos; do yourself a favor and try this big boy on for size.

With the deadly combination of striking aesthetics and exceedingly well-balanced tone, Michael Keller gives us this gorgeous 2010 Jumbo with an offset soundhole and two soundports for an acoustic experience unlike any other. Not only do the sizable soundports provide unprecedented access to the interior workings of Keller’s bracing techniques, they also project a hearty blast of music right at the player, so there’s never going to be a time when you can’t hear yourself, no matter how loud the session at your local ale house.
Between the gorgeous, straight-grained Indian Rosewood of the back and sides, and the Engelmann Spruce, there’s more eye candy than you’ll know what to do with: precision-cut MOP across the fretboard, thin bands of Abalone and dyed wood trim across the top and headstock, and a five-piece Mahogany neck with Maple and Rosewood laminations. Well-adapted for both fingerstyle arrangements and flatpicking, you may find that your other guitars will quickly start gathering dust once this Keller Jumbo enters your collection. It has heaps of rich, colorful tone to offer, and a clean projection that can cut through the mix with ease. Handled with care by its previous owner, this Keller bears only the faintest play wear, but is itching to get grooving.
