New Lowden F-35CX Koa/Red Cedar
Here’s we specifically asked for some amazing Koa and boy did we get it. Just look at the photos and you’ll see the beautiful fiddle back flame. The color is also really special, dark and rich golden-brown. The voice is also dark and rich and lovely blend of Koa and Cedar. A hard back and a soft top always works well. Like most Lowdens this is a great strummer and picker.

The condition is excellent and the tone is everything you’d expect from a Lowden. Equally adept at fingerstyle or strumming and it can take hard hitting and keep giving back.

This 1a Rio graduated at the top of its class in 2001 from Casimiro Lozano—and it’s gone up, up, and up since then. We love the powerful, warm, present and awake flavor of this Lozano, especially in the articulate, defined bass register. Trebles and mids pair up smoothly to fill out the voice, with a sweetness in the upper mids that comes out under a light attack. Being Lozano’s Rio model, this 1a has been upgraded with lovely Brazilian Rosewood and a Spruce top, 650mm scale, Spanish Cedar neck, and French Polish finish throughout for maximum resonance. Being 20 years old, this 1a Rio has opened up oh so handsomely, and has been well cared for with only some play marks on top.

Livewire, folks! We’ve landed an explosive Kenny Smith model from Randy Lucas that dates back to 1999, and has opened up handsomely in the past 20 years. Based on Kenny Smith’s 1935 D-18, this signature model is outfitted with Mahogany back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a K&K Pure Mini (with vintage 1/8” input). Thistle headstock, Waverly tuners, and a sweet flatpicker’s setup with lots of saddle left.
The voice is clean and loud, plenty of bark in the bass but well balanced across the strings for an even response. This Randy Lucas KS speaks for itself, in no uncertain terms.

If we could only describe this guitar in two words, they would be “clear and clean.” Visually, this 2001 Dreadnought from famed Indiana luthier Randy Lucas is impeccable, with hardly any evidence of play wear across the Adirondack Spruce top, tortoise-style pickguard, or Mahogany back and sides. That degree of cleanness extends to its tone as well: played softly or with a robust attack, this Lucas maintains a bell-like fundamental that’s instantly responsive.
Even by ordinary standards this is a superb Dreadnought, but this is hardly an ordinary Dread. Randy worked with Kenny Smith (of the Lonesome River Band) to recreate Smith’s 1935 D-18–a feat Lucas achieved by matching the specs point for point, right down to air brushing the “grain lines” in the Ivoroid tuner knobs to match Smith’s–for a 21 guitar series. Labeled his KS model for short, this Dreadnought offers easy playability, powerful sustain, and a well-balanced voice perfect for both flatpicks and fingertips.

If you had to list your favorite Bluegrass Dreadnought makers active today, we’d bet good money that Randy Lucas would be one of the highest on your list. This LD-28 that we’ve got in the shop is absolutely top of the class in terms of tone, playability, and sheer fun. Randy’s reputation has been built on years of repair and restoration, and as such his guitars are bombproof and dynamite-voiced–at the same time! This 2005 LD-28, in particular, has a tendency toward explosiveness: the low-end is crystal clear and articulate, with a low E and A string that each have great presence and are perfect for accentuating the bass lines of chords in Bluegrass accompaniment. Add to that trebles which pop like firecrackers and a middle register which is tight, controlled, and crisp, and you have an instrument which fully lives up to the title “Bluegrass Cannon.”Built with a dark-grained set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, this box is beautiful to behold, and with the expertly voiced Adirondack Spruce top, the LD-28 has huge potential for projection, but doesn’t top out easily. In short, with Brazilian richness and Adirondack attack, this Dreadnought has enough acoustic force to level a room of the fiercest banjos. That said, this Dreadnought also responds easily to fingerpicking, and with a thumbpick it can broadcast Doc Watson arrangements with the best of them. Traditionally-built contemporary Dreadnoughts which play like butter are few and far between: this LD-28 is on the short list of such Dreads, for sure.
