Get ready to put the top down and go for a spin downtown with this Pogreba aluminum resonator! From the salvaged Rambler hubcap to the burlwood headstock and heelcap, this guitar is a gorgeous example of freethinking, freewheeling instrument design–and it works. Setup for the player who also wants to use a slide, this resonator, coined the “Blacksmith Cadillac” on its label, has the potential for sweetness and clarity when played lightly or brash and projective under a more aggressive attack.
Larry Pogreba has been building unique instruments of a variety of persuasions for many years now, but has recently ceaed building aluminum body resonator guitars, so grab this one while you can!
2009 Pogreba Resonator Aluminum Body
This is the last Pogreba Resonator we’ll be getting from Larry Pogreba. He’s no longer going to make his wonderful Aluminum body creations that have been used by Bonnie Raitt, David Lindley and so many others. This cool instrument is anodized Gold and features a solid Brazilian Rosewood neck, the only one we’ve ever seen from Larry. The cone cover is a ’58 Oldsmobile hubcap. The tone is unique, full of mids with a rich reverb quality that is wonderful. Pogreba resos offer a ‘wet’ sound as compared to the drier National sound. Fingerstyle or slide this one does it all and with it’s own flair.
New Pogreba Large Bodied Resonator Aluminum/10 1/2 in. Cone
Larry continues to offer a unique voice in the resonator world. Keb ‘Mo and Bonnie Raitte are both playing his wonderfully funky creations. They sound as cool as they look and are built to play great with light strings. Here we have a wonderful Gold anodized finish and a Packard Clipper hubcab for the cone cover
New Pogreba Single Cone Small Body Resonator Aluminum Body
It’s very easy to understand why David Lindley, Bonnie Raitt and other great players use Pogrebas. They are different, funky and have a unique voice. The lightweight Aluminum body offers comfort and a complex tone that is versatile. If you are after a unique resonator sound and an easy to play guitar you owe it to yourself to read on…

Our latest Steve Porter Quantum Classical! Built with a nod to both Thomas Humphrey and Gil Carnal in design, Porter’s Quantum model features an elevated fingerboard and dual soundports, a lattice-braced Cedar top, and dark, even-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides. The handmade rosette is composed of Ebony, Bloodwood, Cherry, and Maple. The voice is agile and responsive, and we appreciate the dynamic range in particular. Sloane tuners and a thin French Polish finish for maximum resonance—and a sterling side dot at the 7th fret for understated fingerboard orienteering.

This is our first Classical from California-based luthier Steve Porter—and it won’t be the last! Adopting some of Gil Carnal’s tried-and-true techniques for his own builds, Porter manages to carve out a voice with fierce projection married with a smooth responsiveness and note separation. Clarity is the name of the game here; this Quantum Classical has the easy, breathy richness of a much older, opened up guitar.
Porter achieves this with Balsa braces reinforced with carbon fiber along the top and a suspended cross bar and more carbon fiber rods to tie it all together. With a thin French Polish finish to keep things as resonant as possible, and a cantilevered fretboard extension (ditto for minimal top impedance), and twin soundports flanking the heel, this guitar is both loud and clear. It doesn’t hurt that the top is a creamy set of Carpathian Spruce, or that the back and sides are light-chocolate Indian Rosewood. To make sure the soundports weren’t giving the player a false sense of the guitar’s projection and dynamism, we tested this beauty with an extra set of hands to cover the soundports. The voice remained expansive and balanced. We then compared the instrument’s tone with the guitar in our lap to the voice as heard from ten feet away. Ditto on expansiveness and balance.
This 2017 Concert Classical from Steve Porter already speaks beyond its years, and there’s only one direction to go from here: up.

Leo Posch builds excellent guitars in the tradition of the great mid-century Gibsons and pre-war Martins, and this slope-shouldered Dreadnought exemplifies his dedication to the great tone embodied in those classic instruments. The Adirondack Spruce used here is an essential ingredient in achieving that tone, and the Hormigo Leo uses for back and sides imparts a flavor somewhere between Mahogany and Rosewood. The result is all the classic tone and playability of a pre-war Dread, with a slightly modern twist. The twelve-fret design places the bridge further back in the lower bout, sweetening the bass response and providing greater volume.

Leo Posch has a great reputation for building guitars that are inherently old souls. Somehow he can craft guitars today that you’d swear are 50-100 years old. This model CLG, 0 size guitar is a great example. Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce with no bindings, just a great smokey sunburst and lots of attitude. The instant we played this guitar we could hear the great old Gibson L-0 voice, only this one plays perfectly up the entire neck and has a straight neck and tuners that work perfectly. So you get the best of what’s vintage and none of the hassles. This is a killer blues or rag guitar, but of course it can do anything you put into it. Great little beast…

We played our first Posch last year and we immediately called Leo and invited him to send us guitars any time. He is a maker with a keen sense of how to capture the vintage lure of the best D-18 Martin has ever made. This guitar, like the last, sounds and feels like a 70 year old guitar even though it’s new. No small feat. The Cuban Mahogany body, which is the densest Mahogany, has a voice that is loud and powerful but also deep and rich. This one is a cannon that will clearly continue to grow into a monster guitar. This one is barely preowned, it’s owned by Leo Posch and comes with a full warranty.
