2004 Ryan Signature Series Nightingale, Brazilian Rosewood/Swiss Spruce
The cream of the crop never tastes so sweet as when you play this Signature Series from Kevin Ryan. And sweet is the word here! Premium Brazilian Rosewood from Kevin’s exclusive stash held aside for his Signature Series builds (this one is #033), plus Swiss Spruce on top added creaminess and velvety bass. The voice is smooth and handsomely defined; an exquisite piece for the modern fingerstylist, or anyone who needs maximum definition and detail in every note. The setup is effortless in hand, and Kevin’s use of a longer 25.75” scale adds pop and sizzle to those trebles to really sing out. Kevin’s already surgical-grade precision is cranked to eleven on this one. Fit and finish is flawless, as are the Select Blue Paua Abalone appointments and bevel and intricately interwoven inlay around the 12th fret.
When a builder as good as Kevin really lets the throttle run wide open, you get powerhouses like this Signature Series Nightingale—a once in a lifetime guitar.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerpicking, grand auditorium, brazilain, venetian cutaway, calton, #487.61

This was the first of our ResoDream Series from S.B. MacDonald. Dream Guitars Owner Paul Heumiller collaborated with Scott MacDonald to create this custom version of Scott’s Resonator/Electric Guitar. Scott has built guitars for Lucinda Williams, Robert Hunter (Grateful Dead), renown TV/Film composer Mike Post, and many more greats. We at Dream Guitars have been searching for a really well designed electric resonator and this is it! Scott is a highly skilled artisan so the build quality is top notch and the playability is superb. The ResoDream features a custom high output Lindy Fralin Split Blade Pickup that is exclusive to this model, along with Gotoh 510 tuners and a custom Cedar Creek case. In addition there is a Fishman cone pickup and the two come together through a Fishman preamp. There is a stereo jack so you can separate the cone pickup from the magnetic for added versatility. Wether you play side, fingers or both, this little reso is sure to satisfy!
2021 Solveig & Andreas Kirschner Double Top Classical, Indian Rosewood/Cedar
This 2021 Double Top Classical from Solveig & Andreas Kirschner, here with a short 640mm scale setup, combines power and warmth with an easy playability and featherweight construction. Built as a collaboration with the fine folx at Siccas Guitars, this Double Top boasts Cedar up top with Indian Rosewood back and sides, an elevated fingerboard, and gold Pagos tuners at the headstock. Weighing in just over three pounds, this Double Top is resonant and responsive in hand. We love the slight C shape to the Spanish Cedar neck (though we still consider the profile overall to be a D shape), and French Polish throughout.

With a heady waitlist for a new guitar, Eric Sahlin’s Classicals are a rare sighting on the used market. Today we’ve landed a single owner example from 1994 in Indian Rosewood & Spruce that’s completely opened up, rich, and responsive. Eric adorned the soundhole with an intricate mosaic rosette, and paired that with Rosewood bindings (which even follow the curve of the heel) and Sloane tuners at the headstock. This Classical has been lovingly played for the past 25 plus years, and bears the marks of a guitar that never had the chance to collect dust, but we’re happy to report that all that music has paid off for an opened up voice—and the playability is still sweet and easy to boot.

The lutherie community suffered a great loss with the passing of Taku Sakashta. We’re grateful for the opportunity to host one of his flattops here in the shop today. Taku built this OM in 2007 with dramatic Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, European Spruce on top, and several Sakashta-specific features from the scroll cutaway to the raised headstock logo. The voice is characterized by a focused, directional quality that feels immediate and defined. Additional features include doubled sides, a segmented MOP rosette with Maple purflings, and engraved MOP snowflakes position markers.

Such a lovely voice! This 2017 Sakurai PC (Paris Competion) model is already amazing and it’s practically brand new. CSA Rosewood and Spruce with Sakurai’s cashew finish make for a resonant package that responds beautifully to a range of attacks and styles. Everything about this guitar speaks of smooth, efficient operation, from the tuners and the neck feel to the excellent string-to-string and note-to-note balance.
The bass is characterized by a clean, transparent response and is mated to an equally clear upper register. With enough sustain to make you look around for the hidden speaker that’s playing on repeat, and a glass-smooth setup, this 2017 Sakurai PC is a delight to play each time you pick it up. This model is based on Sakurai’s winning entry to the 1988 Paris International Guitar Luthiers Competition, and hasn’t changed much since then–evidence that Sakurai has perfected his craft in spectacular fashion.

Masaki Sakurai has been at the forefront of Japanese lutherie for many decades, claiming many accolades not the least of which was winning first prize at the 4th International Guitar Making Contest in Paris. So powerful was the guitar he built for that contest, he decided to add it to his lineup of models: the PC was born. South American Rosewood for the back and sides is paired with a Spruce top and finished with Cashew Oil–the woods shine, remain quite resonant, and are solidly protected. The 650mm scale and 52mm nut make for glassy playability, and the overall lightweight build (3lb 12oz) guarantees that you can play this 2015 Sakurai PC for hours without tiring. The voice is just as smooth, with trebles that are big and focused but don’t dominate (so those sweet, warm lower and middle registers can flesh out the tone). This guitar plays and sings like a much older instrument, but is really only a few years old! If you’re at all familiar with Sakurai’s work, you know just how lovely is the experience of playing this fine instrument.

A guitar which plays this smoothly should be illegal. It’s practically criminal, the balance across the registers, the pianistic separation of the strings, the heft of the bottom end, the way the trebles fill the room, and somehow retain a gentleness at the same time. Heck, it’s even a crime to call this a used guitar–practically brand-new from 2015, with not a scratch to be found. This, ladies and gentlemen, is the Maestro-RF from Masaki Sakurai. With Central American Rosewood back and sides and a Spruce top, she sings in a voice equal parts vigorous, rich, and articulate. This isn’t your grandpa’s Classical, either: the Maestro-RF features an elevated fingerboard, which allows for easy access to upper frets and modifies the break angle of the strings over the saddle, increasing the amount of vertical force being applied to the Spruce top, whch increases the responsiveness of the plates and dramatically enhances the sustain. Moreover, this shifts where the soundhole is projecting outward, which translates to more of the guitar’s sonorous voice in the player’s ear. If you haven’t played an elevated fingerboard Classical yet, this is your chance! You won’t be disappointed.
