2016 Dehradun SJ, North Indian Rosewood/Redwood
Dave Murray’s India-based Dehradun Guitar Company is consistently churning out guitars which sound as good as they look. That’s saying something, considering the precision of the fit and finish and the harmonious sense of curve and contour present in this 2017 SJ in North Indian Rosewood and Redwood.
If you’re in the market for a well-balanced and responsive guitar that lends itself equally well to picks and fingertips, this is one Dehradun worth considering. We found the middle and upper registers particularly warm and present, with the trebles expertly straddling the line between clarity and projection. The short scale and 13-fret neck, combined with a Redwood top, lend an extra Oomph! to the sweet voice that translates faithfully in an amplified setting, thanks to the onboard L.R. Baggs Anthem SL pickup. These guitars come from a good place, and the attention to detail and care that went into their construction shows in the smoothness of the tone, and the shine of the finish.

We’ve been out and about at the shows this past year to find the next great builders for DG to represent–and brother have we found some! Recently Paul met with David Murray, founder of the India-based Dehradun Guitar Company, who had an impressive Concert-size guitar to show. Long story short, we ended up snagging one for ourselves.
This brand new Dehradun Concert has a rich tone and serious projection. Featuring South Indian Rosewood for the back and sides and Red Cedar for the top, this guitar’s big voice will easily reach peak volume with even the gentlest application of a pick or fingertip. The satin-finished neck is set up fast and low for easy-breezy left hand work. When you let the trebles ring out, you’ll notice a few gorgeous overtone strains which seem to swell after a moment after the note’s been plucked; natural reverb at its finest. The Somogyi-esque interrupted rosette, Mahogany-and-Rosewood neck, and Abalone trim come together in an attractive package that looks just about as good as it plays.

Long time luthier Tomas Delgado comes from luthier stock in both his father and grandfather, with whom he worked for a number of years. Today, he continues to uphold their tradition of guitarbuilding with his own work, and we’re proud to offer this gorgeous preowned example of just how far he’s come. This Classical was built in 2008 with premium Brazilian Rosewood and Cedar, and has been lovingly played in since then. And it’s a featherweight: right at 3lbs 4oz! The response is quick and even between the registers, and we love the blooming flavor of overtones in the bass and mids. French Polished for maximum resonance (part of what keeps the build weight so low here), this Delgado Classical is a dynamic tool for the serious musician.

A rich and resonant offering from Florida-based luthier Robert Desmond, this 2002 Classical in Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce has opened up into a sweet and resonant force to be reckoned with. Playability across the neck is smooth and comfortable, and position markers at the fifth and seventh frets help to orient your left hand without detracting from Desmond’s traditional aesthetic elsewhere.
There’s a sweet swell of overtones in the upper register which bloom a moment after a note is struck, adding a rich and full-figured tone to your arrangements. The bass response is vigorous but well-balanced with the other registers and fills out, rather than overpowers, the voice. This 2002 Desmond is in excellent condition and is ready for many more years of sweet music!

Mike DeTemple’s work speaks for itself, but we’ll try and offer our two cents. The Spirit Series ’56 is Mike’s take on the classic strat shape—with a few choice additions which make them another beast. For starters, Mike uses titanium components, from the neck plate to the tremolo, and here upgraded this piece from 2011 with a Fossilized Mastodon Ivory nut (and pickup switch tip), open back Gotoh 510 tuners, and a Red Maple neck. And the cherry on top: Mike’s bespoke, handwound Sweet Spot S2 pickups. Mike works his magic such that the signal is even and clear across all five positions, so you don’t have to worry about compensating on the fly. They play like grass-fed butter: top shelf fat n juicy.

This one’s more than ready for action. Such a quick, energetic, expressive flattop! Dion knows how to tune his guitars for great responsiveness, note separation, and power–which this nearly new 2021 No.04 model has in spades. Indian Rosewood body with Italian Spruce top for starters; add a unique U brace around the soundhole and throw in a carbon fiber bridge plate, 10″ arch to the back, and micro arm bevel for a vibrant, modern voice and sharp aesthetic. The neck is satin finished and is one of the smoothest we’ve perhaps ever handled here in the shop, and on top Dion installed EVO frets in an Ebano fingerboard to keep the setup dialed in for the long haul. Notice the attention to every detail: right down to the nut that’s inset into the board. Sheller tuners just above that to round out the sharp-dressed looks.
If you’re looking for a modern flattop that comes preloaded with an expressive voice and added dynamism, plus effortless playability, this 2021 Dion No.04 could be just the ticket.

In addition to the brand new No. 4 we recently landed from Dion, we’ve got a lovingly played-in 2017 No. 4 which North Dakota musician Tom Brousseau recently toured with. Birdseye Maple back and sides paired with an Engelmann Spruce top, Dion’s ultra smooth black-dyed Spanish Cedar neck, and a lively, cracklin’ voice that breathes energy into your playing. An upper bout soundport gives the player a bit more “me in the monitor,” and the setup is slick and easy on the hands. We love the clear and even response this No. 4 offers, from fret one all the way to dusty number 20. Dion’s aesthetic lets the quality of the wood speak for itself, and the figure of the Birdseye Maple throughout speaks volumes. And we’re listening.

We’re proud to announce a new partnership with Dion Guitars, which we’ve been working on for some time. And we’re doubly proud to offer our first Dion No. 4 model here with European Birdseye Maple and Italian Spruce. The Honduran Mahogany neck is dyed black and polished to a feather-smooth satin finish that’s remarkable to the touch. High gloss U.V.-cured Polyester elsewhere for style points, and Dion’s crisp fit-n-finish and contrasting light and dark aesthetic come together in a striking visual presentation that manages to feel familiar and new at the same time.
Small soundport in the upper bout gives the player a bit extra in their ear, three-on-a-plate Waverly tuners set off the dyed headstock, and the snug fit of the Visesnut flight case (including case cover) puts one at ease: this Dion is in safe hands. We loved the lively and energetic response. This No. 4 has a crisp attack that’s followed by flush of warm overtones to sweeten up the voice, and there’s just enough bark in the bass to reward your thumb or flatpick when you dig in.
Our very first Dion guitar fits right into whatever situation we threw at it, and it responded with crisp definition and a smoothly dialed in setup. We’d recommend the No. 4 for just about anything.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, birds eye maple, evo frets, flatpick, OM, bolt-on, bolt on

Here we have a like-new Dobro from 1995. The steel body with its single cone and biscuit bridge offers up that classic clank and wail reminiscent of old Bukka White recordings. The body is finished in a tobacco burst which blends nicely with the Rosewood fingerboard. The action is set for slide and fingers and the sound is great.

The combination of Red Cedar on top and Wenge for the back and sides makes for great balance across the registers, and a little extra sweetness in the trebles. The Trinity Select body is 14 1/2” across the lower bout, making this a smaller instrument in hand and very comfortable to play. The neck is 12 frets to the body with a short 25” scale for added playing ease. Tom’s Select appointment package is here rendered with gorgeous Abalone trim at the headstock, fingerboard, and top. At the lower bout you’ll find an arm bevel incorporated into the Rosewood bindings, and flawless fit n finish throughout.
