Oh, to play a Greenfield guitar. Michael’s work is a testament to the tonal fruits that can be plucked with a dogged determination to experimentation–this 2009 G1 is sweet, indeed. She’s basically a tour of the custom features Greenfield offers: multiscale, 7 strings, elevated fingerboard, arm and rib bevels, pinless bridge, soundport, Spalted Maple and Abalone rosette. Pairing Koa with Lutz Spruce in a smaller body gives this G1 great clarity and a crystalline separation between the strings; and with that extra 7th string, that separation is all the more crucial.
If you’re worried about the fingerboard being too wide or the multiscale challenging, don’t–the playability is smooth enough to spread on your morning toast. This G1 is deceptively comfortable to play. Interested in testing the uncharted tuning waters which that fearsome extra string offers? The sky’s basically the limit; we found that AEADEAE (DADGAD tuned down with an E on the highest string) was an excellent leaping point for more exotic explorations. If you’re even remotely interested, reach out–there aren’t many guitars like this on the market, and none of them are going to be so well-outfitted as this 2009 Greenfield G1 7-String multiscale Baritone.

We’ve been lucky enough to have a number of amazing Baritone guitars pass through our shop, each its own interpretation of this new and exciting form–but brother, does this Baritone from Michael Greenfield take the cake. After this Maple-and-Spruce wonder has been in your hands, all other guitars, Baritone or otherwise, will feel like toys by comparison. The sheer volume of sound that this Greenfield releases into the air makes the hair on your arms stand up, and the richness! We can’t think of another Baritone guitar with the calibre of expression and projection that this Greenfield exudes, almost casually.
Maybe it’s the Maple back and sides, or the small soundport on the upper bout, but the voice of this guitar is immensely dynamic, with bass strings that are proud and resounding (the opposite of muddiness) and the kind of balanced tone that shouldn’t be possible on a guitar of this size. One peek through the soundport, and you’ll see Greenfield’s genius at work: radial braces on the back, and a bridge truss that links the bridge plate to the tailblock, in order to counteract the greater string pull from Baritone-gauge strings and the 28 1/2″ scale length. You can see for yourself: the fit and finish is flawless, both inside and out. While you’re there, you might notice that a K&K Pure Western pickup is installed–and this is one of the nicest features of this already well-outfitted instrument: played with a preamp and amplifier, the voice of this Greenfield becomes megalithic, monumental, almost primal. The bottom strings are given an extra slug of bassiness, and the trebles shine on like crazy diamonds! You can trust us when we tell you that the setup is glass-smooth, that the neck profile is sleek and low, and this Baritone can be played for hours on end without fatigue. Plus? It comes in a Calton hardshell case, so you know this big slice of Greenfield cake is perfectly safe when not in use (because eventually, you’ll have to sleep).

Balanced power. This 2018 Lowden Baritone is one of George’s BAR-50 F/F models, boasting an expansive multiscale fan fret setup of 28 inches down the 26 3/8 inches. The result is lots of power on the bottom end, but sweetness and easy playability on the top–the best of both worlds for a baritone. Moreover, the Lowden team upfitted this model with master grade African Blackwood back and sides and master grade Adirondack Spruce, which is one of our alltime favorite tonewood combinations. The result is glassy note definition and lots of power. The body is tied up with Tasmanian Blackwood everywhere for a striking look. Satin finish throughout for excellent neck feel, and a body that won’t blind your audience under the glare of the bright lights.

Linda Manzer needs little introduction to the guitar aficionado, but if you’ve never played one of her Baritone Guitars read on… Linda has a real knack for Baritone instruments, as evidenced by Pat Metheny’s use of one just like this one below on his ‘One Quiet Night’ CD. The purity and clarity of voice, that all her instruments share, really sets her long scale guitars apart. This stunning Koa and German Spruce Wedge body is small, by baritone standards, yet the voice is full and satisfying. The Koa offers great separation of notes played anywhere on the fingerboard. The playing dimensions are 1 3/4″ at the nut and 2 1/4″ at the saddle, again slightly smaller than some baritones, but combined with the body size and neck profile make this bari easy to hold and play. The 28.75″ scale easily handles low A tunings and can come up to B or C depending on string gauges. To sum it up, Linda knows Baritones…

The late Lance McCollum assembled an impressive body of work in his time, including a great number of great Baritones. We’ve loved every single one that we’ve played here in the shop, and this 2005 example is nothing less than stellar. Cocobolo body with Spruce on top, 27.5″ scale at a sweet spot between short and (very) long scale; dressed up with just enough Abalone to make it all pop. Great string to string balance, and especially for a Baritone this beauty has rich, strong trebles. The neck is reinforced with multiple laminations for added stability, and we’re happy to report this 17-year-old Baritone is in excellent playing shape, indeed. Add a bridge plate transducer B-Band pickup, and you’re ready for just about anything.

From the late Lance McCollum comes this gorgeous and highly playable baritone with sides of rare Andaman Padauk and a top of Italian Spruce. This was Lance’s personal Baritone for quite a while and it is known quite well in guitar circles. It is the sister to Alex DeGrassi’s which also has Padauk from the same log. Andaman Padauk has been virtually wiped out due to storms that have hit that Island. So this is extremely rare wood. Lance was perhaps the most prolific of Baritone makers, having made nearly 40 of them. This one is beautifully appointed, with Lance’s personal logo, a custom laughing hyena on the headstock, snakewood bindings, and abalone top trim. An under-the-saddle pickup rounds out this lively, clear and rich Baritone.

Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars is an old friend, just like this Baritone. This beauty was originally commissioned in 2014 for our own Paul Heumiller with Ken, and those two embarked on a collaboration that’s kept Paul bari happy for a number of years. Padauk back and sides offer crisp, clear projection and pair with Adirondack Spruce on top for power, power, power. A multiscale setup from 28 1/2” to 27 1/4” adds extra definition and pop to the bass register, and keeps those trebles sugar sweet on the tongue. The neck is carved with an asymmetrical profile that better matches a player’s hand geometry, and the body is further outfitted with twin arm and rib bevels for creature comfort—a wonderful thing on a big boy like this powerhouse Baritone with over 16” across the lower bout. That said, it weighs in at a trim 5lbs, so won’t wear you out anytime soon. Paul later had a James May Ultra Tonic pickup system installed, which sounds, frankly, absurdly good.
Here’s a little more from Paul: “This guitar was a wonderful collaboration between Ken Jones and myself. I selected my favorite specs from the many baritones we’ve sold over the years and incorporated them all into this guitar. Ken really nailed it tonally, ergonomically, and aethestically. I played this guitar every day and it inspired so many songs. For me that’s the sign of a great guitar: inspiration to play.”Click here to watch Paul play and discuss this beauty.
