The first multiscale Robbins R.1c to come through our shop—and we couldn’t be happier. This is a powerhouse with lots of gears, equally at home at concert pitch and C9. Honduran Rosewood back and sides pairs up with German Spruce on top, 26.25-25.5” multiscale fretboard, and Tyler’s latest interrupted, deconstructed rosette design to tie it all together. This is a medium-sized build at 15 7/8” across the lower bout, and we’re impressed by how much bass Tyler was able to inject into the voice; it sings out with the weight and presence of a bigger guitar. The trebles cut through the mix just as easily, and we were frankly hard pressed to find a note that didn’t sound good anywhere along the fretboard. To top it all off, Robbins includes a custom Calton case and Caseadillo case cover to keep this R.1c safe and sound on those rare moments when you aren’t playing it.

2019 L-00 from Davide Serracini — Birdseye Maple and Italian Spruce are the main ingredients for this delightful creature. Small in body but massive in voice and spirit. The 25–25.625″ scale makes for a very subtle but effective multi-scale, and the 1 13/16″ nut width gives your left hand some extra room to play.

Bruce Sexauer’s touch brings tonewood to life in a way only Bruce can. This brand new FT-16-C “Penngrove” model is in its own category of flattop, outfitted with a wedge body, multiscale fretboard, oil varnish finish, and gorgeous woods to boot. Panama Rosewood (D. tucurensis) back and sides with Adirondack Spruce on top, and a Honduran Mahogany neck. The Penngrove weighs in at a trim 3lbs 14oz, and plays like grass-fed butter; it’s a dream machine for a wide range of tunings and attacks. We really appreciate the even response and note separation between the registers, which lets big chords ring out with clarity and definition.

Bruce Sexauer has carved out a distinct name for himself in this modern era of lutherie. In building incredibly light, resonant, and gorgeously composed guitars, Sexauer has a lot to offer for the fingerstylist looking for an all-in-one guitar. This latest Dream Series comes in Bruce’s JB-15 package with an assymetrical body, subtle 1/2 inch multiscale fretboard, our very own Brazilian Rosewood and a creamy set of Italian Spruce from Bruce’s private stash. The voice balances between clarity in the bass and juicy overtones in the trebles, and the slight multiscale makes for great play feel and intonation in lowered tunings–playing in DADGAD and beyond is an exercise in ease. Even though it’s brand new, this beauty already boasts an airy and opened up tone to rival an older, played-in instrument. 

At long last, Eric Weigeshoff has finished our custom build for Yasmin Williams! This Skytop GC is what fine lutherie is all about: Teredo-hole Sitka Spruce, Spalted Tamarind back and sides, multiscale fretboard, twin soundports and Bloodwood appointments—James May Ultra Tonic pickup, Visesnut flight case, and more percussive fingerstyle fun than you can shake a pocketful of acrylic nails at. We’d say the only thing missing is a player to warm it up, but we’re sure Yasmin will keep this Skytop in hand and lap to make music for many years to come.
