2017 Benoît Lavoie Multiscale, Ziricote/Adirondack Spruce
Benoît Lavoie has been in the lutherie game for a while now, specializing in everything from guitars and violins to cellos and double basses–all that diverse experience, when married with his exciting sense of curve and a scientist’s eye, makes for one heck of a luthier.
Our 2017 Multiscale wonder in Ziricote and Adirondack Spruce will shake the windowpanes right out of their frames. Benoît voiced the Adi top for a powerful response that’s best summoned with an aggressive attack. Dig in and dig in, but this Lavoie won’t top out! The multiscale fretboard extends from 27” on the bass up to 25.5” on the treble, and we found it soaked up C tunings like a thirsty sponge. The offset soundhole and large soundport that spans the corner of the upper bout help project this guitar’s girthy voice right to the player, but all that rich volume doesn’t stop at the player’s ear: this guitar also projects outward with fierce intensity.
Since we first sold this guitar in 2017, it’s had an armrest installed, and it’s been fitted for a custom Hoffee case (fits like a glove!). It’s been played in a lot, and has opened up immensely, but we think it’s going to keep up the moment for a long time to come.Other keywords: lutherie, multi scale, fingerboard, waverly, slotted headstock, venetian cutaway

Balanced power. This 2018 Lowden Baritone is one of George’s BAR-50 F/F models, boasting an expansive multiscale fan fret setup of 28 inches down the 26 3/8 inches. The result is lots of power on the bottom end, but sweetness and easy playability on the top–the best of both worlds for a baritone. Moreover, the Lowden team upfitted this model with master grade African Blackwood back and sides and master grade Adirondack Spruce, which is one of our alltime favorite tonewood combinations. The result is glassy note definition and lots of power. The body is tied up with Tasmanian Blackwood everywhere for a striking look. Satin finish throughout for excellent neck feel, and a body that won’t blind your audience under the glare of the bright lights.

We love Baritones. Hands down. And we love Linda Manzer’s work. Hands down. So naturally, we’re all hands on deck for this Manzer Baritone from 2017. Flamed Koa back and sides, German Spruce on top—and the kicker: multiscale at 28.75-28”, slim body plus Wedge for easy playability. This makes for a powerhouse Baritone that fits and feels familiar like a normal flattop. The treble strings have delicious weight and color, and we had a blast in A tunings, all the way down to G. It weighs in under five pounds, slim, trim, and ready for action.

In the pursuit for the perfect fingerstyle guitar, you might want to give this 2001 Manzer a go: the combination of Linda’s larger Cow Poke body, multiscale (27″ on the bass and 25 5/8″ on the treble), and Manzer Wedge make this guitar a force to be reckoned with. Altered tunings across the spectrum intonate beautifully with the multi-scale fingerboard, and the combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce makes for a voice with glassy clarity and fearsome depth.
One of but a small handful of guitars with matching Phoenix-and-Chinese-Dragon inlays, this Cow Poke has the looks to set it apart from the crowd (to say nothing of the distinctive Manzer tone). Need something to gig with? The B-Band UST pickup does the trick handsomely: we found that the richness and color of the acoustic voice translated faithfully into amplified territory across several different amps.

Rather than attempt to praise Michihiro Matsuda ourselves, we’d like to let his teacher and master luthier Ervin Somogyi speak for his work: “Michi is really a phenomenon. There will never be anyone like him. He has a beautiful sense of the line in his designs, and his work is remarkably original.” In our eyes, Matsuda is doing more to evolve the marriage of sonic precision and visual elegance in guitar building than many, if not all, of his peers. His dedication to graceful figures and sculpted tonality is unparalleled, yielding instruments which exist simultaneously as both works of art and tools for creating art. The 2011 M1 before you is just one example of this man’s genius problem-solving skills at work: rather than succumb to the flaw of the Manzer Wedge–which is that the fretboard is traditionally rotated towards the player’s face and forced the left hand to cant at an unnatural angle–Michi introduced a subtle twist to the Mahogany, cantilevering it over the top so it floats like an Archtop guitar. In so doing, Michi created a guitar which was as comfortable and responsive as a traditional Manzer Wedge and as easy to fret as a standard body, thereby enhancing the advantages of both systems with the drawbacks of neither. In addition, the M1 has a subtle multiscale system and his iconic swooped Florentine Cutaway. The detailed segmented rosette of Wenge and Spalted Wood and Matsuda’s carved two-piece Rosewood-and-Wenge bridge stand out as examples of woodworking at its finest, most precise execution. Sonically, the M1 has crystalline balance. Each string rings perfectly clear in respect to its brothers, and the Manzer Wedge helps create a voice with a tight, controlled sound. This guitar is amazingly responsive, but has a thoughtful sonority that makes it the perfect instrument for fingerstylists of every walk. The Madagascar Rosewood (whose provenance Michi has documented) and German Spruce (which was cut in the 1930’s and air dried in the care of a German luthier since then) are paired and tuned to create an instrument with shocking balance and alluring grain patterns across the back and sides. Finally, this guitar comes well-protected with its original Karura hardshell flightcase, so the M1 is practically immune to harm. But all of this pales in comparison to experiencing this guitar firsthand. In fact, we feel that there’s no way to truly grasp how moving this instrument is to the soul, which is why we strongly recommend coming to see us to play this one-of-a-kind work of art.

Winnipeg’s own Jordan McConnell has wrapped yet another jaw dropping build with 15 Inch Model #073 in Padauk and Moonspruce. Madagascar Rosewood appointments at the bridge and fretboard, plus a multiscale setup of 26 1/4” to 25 1/2”; and twin arm & rib bevels for creature comfort (note how Jordan created a braided effect with layering the Madagascar on the arm bevel). Then there’s this Padauk-Moonspruce combo. A distinctive voice that’s unique even by McConnell standards, we find this beauty has a glassy evenness across the range that mixes up gorgeously; notes ringing out clearly and without stumbling into each other. A light smattering of treble overtones cast some added color and presence, and pair up with a crisp bottom end. This is a fingerstyle phenom.

So begins the next epoch of Jordan McConnell’s career in lutherie. With this 15 Inch Model, #071, Jordan will no longer be accepting orders from clients. Instead, he will be exclusively building instruments according to his own aesthetics and voice. We are so grateful to have been a part of his process for so many years, and it is an immense honor for us to continue to offer these new, completely Jordan creations, to you. As you’ll see, #071 is a fitting start. Here’s Jordan:
“This is the first guitar to have been entirely built in my new studio, so I wanted it to be special. The top is master grade Swiss Moonspruce cut in 2004, and the back and sides are chosen from some of the first sets of Brazilian Rosewood I acquired back in 2002. The Curly Spanish Cedar neck was from the very first order I placed with A&M Wood Supply in 1999, as is the Ebony fretboard. By choosing some of the oldest wood in my collection, I wanted to reach back to the beginning of my career while at the same time showcasing the direction my building has been moving in the last few years, both aesthetically and sonically.
With the smaller body and 12-fret neck join on this guitar, I chose to revisit the influence that the classical builders have had on my instruments and really dive into the intimacy and emotion that is inherent in this configuration, while still building in enough power and volume to dig in and have some fun.”Other keywords: joran mcconnell, fingerstyle, dadgad, fanfret, fanned fret, multi scale, multi-scale

This 2018 16 Inch model from Jordan McConnell is a lot like Paul’s personal McConnell: Brazilian Rosewood over Moonspruce, 26.25-25.5″ multiscale, and oh. so. beautiful. The fingerstyle response is surgically precise, from Standard to Cadd9 and onward to more esoteric tunings. We are Jordan’s exclusive representative, and he is no longer taking orders but building guitars to his own specifications. Interested? Give us a shout!

There may be no such thing as the perfect guitar, but this 2018 McConnell is just about as close as you’re going to get. Jordan’s unique brand of lutherie makes for some of the most inspirational guitars we’ve ever seen, and this 2018 16 Inch model does. not. disappoint. This is Jordan’s first African Blackwood guitar, topped with Swiss Moonspruce and trimmed out with matching arm and rib bevels. Spiraling along the fretboard and headstock (before swirling around the soundhole is a combination of Satinwood, African Blackwood, Ebony, and Madagascar Rosewood. Rodgers tuners (of course), French Polish on top for maximum resonance, and a fabulous example of Jordan’s carved bridge (here in Madagascar Rosewood). Oh, and then there’s the multiscale fretboard (26 to 25 inches) for dialed in ergonomics and intonation across a spectrum of tunings.

For demo only, NOT FOR SALE: Jordan McConnell has been a friend of Dream Guitars for some years now. He’s visited us regularly while touring with his Grammy and Juno award winning group The Duhks of Canada. Somehow he’s managed to build over 30 guitars while touring the world as a player. We commissioned this very special Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce 16 Inch nearly two years ago after playing several of Jordan’s instruments that blew us away. In his young building career he’s already crafted guitars for Celtic Guitarist John Doyle and Seth Avett of the Avett Brothers. He can now add Dream Guitars owner Paul Heumiller to the list as Paul has fallen in love with this multiscale beauty.

This custom McConnell 16 Inch has more headroom than an open-air coliseum. We tried to overdrive it, really we did, but the more we dug in the louder it got! Jordan voiced the Moonspruce top with a more aggressive attack in mind, and that, coupled with a solid Brazilian Rosewood neck and multiscale frets (26.25” at the bass, 25.5” at the treble), means that this guitar has huge reserves of energy just waiting beneath the surface. Jordan describes the Brazilian back and sides as “hyper premium.” We couldn’t have said it better ourselves. The bass response is hefty but well-defined, and the vigorous treble strings cut well in the mix without sounding shrill. Consistent across the fretboard, the voice has a room-filling quality that doesn’t break up when played aggressively. You might want earplugs.

This beauty is a custom build for one of our clients. As such it is not available for purchase, but let us know if you’d like to get a McConnell for yourself!
Really, we want to know: just how does Jordan McConnell manage to pack an entire choir of guitars into one body? This 16 Inch is so hot off the bench it’d scorch your hands to play it, except that the voice is such a smooth operator it’s cool to the touch and a balm to your ears. Designed with one of our fingerstyle clients in mind, Jordan paired another of his gorgeous sets of Brazilian Rosewood with Moonspruce (like Paul’s own McConnell) and a multiscale fretboard from 26” at the bass to 25” at the treble. The frets are so slanted as to maximize intonation and string tension in lowered tunings, and while some multiscale arrangements are dramatically sprawling, Jordan opted for a gentler spread here that still feels perfectly normal for the left hand but keeps the intonation spot on all the way into C tuning territory. There’s a danger in going so low, though: this McConnell performs so beautifully in that sonorous mode that you’ll be hard-pressed to ever go back to standard tuning.
The Moonspruce top is French Polished (Jordan’s FP technique yields a crystal clear and resonant finish) for maximum resonance; the rest of the instrument is finished in Nitrocellulose Lacquer for protection. The result is a surgical clarity to each and every note plucked across the fretboard. The voice has some serious heft, but avoids muddiness altogether. In short, it sounds like it’s been opening up for a few decades already. Remember, it’s only a few months old by the time of this writing! In spite of having achieved such an impressive tone, Jordan wasn’t yet satisfied: he lent his prodigious marquetry skills to crafting a striking mosaic of Brazilian Rosewood, Ebony, Spalted Maple, Satinwood, Gold MOP, and Abalone that adorns the headstock veneers and soundhole. Jordan manages to blend a contemporary aesthetic with an organic palette of colors. Naturally, Alessi tuners complete the package.
If we could only play one guitar for the rest of our lives, this McConnell would more than fit the bill.

Here we have a Custom-ordered McConnell 16″ model built for a client of ours. This guitar was in part inspired by Paul Heumiller‘s personal McConnell, with its primo Brazilian Rosewood back and sides perfect German Spruce top, a truly incredible Brazilian Rosewood neck, and multiscale layout with a 26″ scale length on the low E and a 25″ on the high. If you frequent our website often you know we are big Fans of Jordan’s work: he has one of the most unique aesthetics and voices out there, and we just love it. This is one of Jordan’s latest guitars and represents everything that makes a guitar great, from the beautiful lines and perfect craftsmanship to that modern tone and feel. This, in our minds, is about as perfect as a guitar can get. The incredibly lightweight build allows for a gargantuan voice with buckets of sustain and strong, dynamic tonality. Lowered tunings sound fabulous, thanks to the multiscale, and the tastefully sloped Florentine cutaway is both gorgeous to look at and delightfully convenient for playing the upper registers, and the rib rest and arm rest bevels make playing as comfortable as breathing This guitar comes with a Karura hardshell case.

Here is a very rare preowned guitar from Jordan McConnell. Jordan is one of the hottest builders on the scene today, having quietly built dozens of guitars for his fellow touring musicians such as Seth Avett and John Doyle. Jordan also plays in the group the Duhks. As a touring pro he knows what musicians need from an instrument and boy does he delivery. Dream Guitars owner Paul Heumiller himself owns a McConnell SJ, “the best fingerstyle guitar [he’s] ever played.” This one is a custom Brazilian Rosewood SJ multiscale with a German Spruce top, cutaway, Graf tuners and a custom Hoffee Carbon Flight Case. The combination of the 26″ scale on the bass and the 25″ scale on the treble is perfect for moving between alternate tunings like DADGAD and Standard. This one does it all!
