We are very excited to have happened upon this rare preowned Matsuda M1. As an added bonus this one was selected for use on Tony McManus’ latest solo CD. This powerhouse is crafted from Cambodian Rosewood and Italian spruce and features massive projection and extraordinary clarity. It also has nice artistic touches such as the 3 piece headplate, marquetry style rosette, fingerboard purfling and sculpted bridge

This Mattingly Classical is a well-preserved treasure from one of America’s cherished luthiers. Built all the way back in 1984, this Concert Classical is in superb condition today, with only a few marks in spite of its many years. It’s been in one person’s hands all this time, and now we’re looking for the next person to take on this beautiful, responsive, and eminently playable Mattingly. Straight-grained Indian Rosewood back and sides, German Spruce on top, and Robert carved the neck with a sweet and subtle curve that feels silky in the hand. 650mm scale, rope style bindings and mosaic rosette, and Robert’s hallmark scalloped nut completes the image. This 1984 Mattingly comes with its original hardshell case and case cover.

A beautiful blast from the past. We’re happy and proud to have landed this Concert Classical from Robert Mattingly, which comes to us all the way from 1967 in Flamed Maple and Spruce. The voice is quick, lively, and immediately rewarding; the evidence of an instrument that’s been played in and opened up completely. At some point in its long life (so far!), this Mattingly was played as a Flamenco guitar, and has twin clear tap plates and nail marks to prove it. We’ve gone over the instrument head to toe and can confirm that it’s in great playing shape, ready for many more years to yet.

R.L. (Bob) Mattingly made fine classical instruments and was the owner of “The World of Strings”, a music store in Long Beach, CA. His career as a luthier began in the early ’60s and he was primarily self taught. In the early 70’s he visited many of the great builders in Spain, and even spent a couple of days in the shop with his hero Miguel Rodriguez. Mattingly built over 700 guitars before his untimely death in 1992.
This incredible 1968 Mattingly has tons of character and mojo. It is one of those instruments that you wish could talk. The playability is excellent. The Rosewood back and sides and Spruce top yield a tone that embodies decades of tradition–a round, robust sound with great mids. This very collectible and very musical Mattingly will be a treasure for some lucky player.

Here we have a Hank Mauel Parlor in Redwood and Claro Walnut. This small-bodied beauty has a clear, robust voice, thanks in part, to the twelve fret neck, which locates the bridge right in the sweet spot of the guitar top. The Redwood top is complemented nicely by the Claro Walnut back and sides, and together they impart a sweet clarity and surprisingly rich low end for such a small guitar. Traditional and fingerstylists will love the articulate warmth.

Premium Brazilian Rosewood like the set Roy used here for the back and sides is a wonder to behold: straight grain with just enough figure to make it pop, reminiscent of prewar Martin stock, and extra stable. Adirondack Spruce on top, which has opened up nicely in the past 15 years, rounds out the basis for a classic, vintage sound. The voice is smooth and well balanced across the registers; lively string energy in the bottom end helps carry tone out and away from the body with great projection.

Roy McAlister is very well known for his tradition-inspired designs. The body is Brazilian Rosewood and the top is Alpine Spruce so you get a lot of rich, powerful tone. The scale is 24.6″ which makes for a delightfully easy tension and the wider spacing make it a joy for fingerstyle play. Vintage vibe, slothead, pyramid bridge, it’s all here…

Power and purr in equal measure. Lance McCollum really knew how to build ‘em. This Grand Auditorium comes to us from 1999, and that’s given it plenty of time to open up. And up, and up! Lots of power and projection under the hood, but notes have a smooth definition to them that makes the voice so sweet. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides pair up with European Spruce on top with a long scale setup at 25 3/4” to add extra pow! to those bass strings. Our repair gurus have just dressed the frets, and it plays like grass-fed butter. It’ll take equally well to both fingertips and picks to boot. There’s even an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system to carry it straight up to the stage.
