Paul’s 2012 McConnell 16 Inch, Brazilian Rosewood/Moonspruce
NOT FOR SALE: This McConnell 16 Inch guitar, dubbed ‘The Winding Road’, was custom built for Dream Guitars owner Paul Heumiller. It is crafted from premium old-growth Brazilian Rosewood and topped with Moon Spruce, which is spruce harvested at the phase of the moon when the sap is least active in accordance with a century-old tradition(see more here, http://www.best-eurospruce.com/4.html). A rare and special Spruce that sounds amazing. This guitar also has a solid Brazilian Rosewood neck for incredible sustain and feel. The multiscale layout is 26.25″ on the bass and 25.5″ on the treble, designed to excel in low tunings like C9, Open G and DADGAD. Paul also worked with artist Fian Arroyo(http://www.fian.com) and renown inlay artist Larry Robinson (http://robinsoninlays.com) for the custom fingerboard inlay inspired by the Blue Ridge Mountains and the European Alps where Paul frequently motorcycles. Lastly, the entire guitar is French Polished to allow every ounce of tone to be heard. Just listen to the video to see why Paul so loves his McConnell guitar. Now taking orders for McConnell guitars. Brent McElroy’s 2018 Generation 2.1 Standard Model is a powerhorse (that’s the intersection of powerhouse and workhorse) dressed to the nines with Adirondack Spruce on top, Claro Walnut back and sides, and a gorgeous Amboyna Burl rosette. The voice here is characterized by a dry, woody response that fires right off the top with a quick decay that makes for added clarity on those fast passages. A pinless Ebony bridge with bone saddle helps more efficiently activate the Adi top, and makes for effortless string changes to boot. The neck is finished in satin for an old-pair-of-jeans kind of feel in hand with a slim profile for easy fretability.

The effect, when combined with the offset position markers, elliptical rosette, and open headstock, is to stand out from the nylon string crowd with an exciting flair. Paul McGill’s nylon string guitars are something to behold: where stylish contemporary aesthetic meets excellent craftsmanship and a dedication to powerhouse tone, both acoustic and amplified. The 2013 Super Ace we have here today is practically mint, and is as loud and expressive as a fresh pot of coffee in the morning. Paul gives us the perfect guitar for gigging in the form of his Super Ace, with it’s aggressive cutaway for two octaves’ access, and this is one of the first guitars to feature McGill’s new amplification system which combines Graph Tech individual saddle pickups with Paul’s custom preamp that he’s been designing for the past several years! By offering phase inversion for each string, Paul’s system helps minimize feedback and maximize a balanced, organic amplified voice. That means that all the rich, focused tonality of the Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, and the well-defined low-end from Bubinga back and sides, translate faithfully into the Super Ace’s stage presence when amplified. Add to all of these acoustic advantages McGill’s sense of style with Snakewood bindings, fretboard, and bridge, and the smooth operation of the Baljak tuners in gold and Snakewood, and you’ve got a instrument which looks as good as it sounds. See below for a link to McGill’s website, where he explains his preamp in greater detail.

If Paul McGill ever builds a less-than-stellar guitar, the end times are upon us. The man’s got serious skills, and a reputation to match–and his Turbo model is one of the best calling cards in the business. What makes the Turbo so hot to trot? McGill employs a unique five-fan brace pattern, along with long struts that span the entire length of the body, to create a vigorous tone which fuses traditional Spanish warmth with the clarity of modern lattice braces. Certainly, a Cedar top and Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides help take that warm precision and crank up the projection and richness factors, until this 2007 Turbo becomes a vehicle for both vibrant crescendos and a subtle adagio.
Paul’s craftsmanship is top-notch, so you can rest assured that every other aspect of this guitar is in tip-top shape, including the new jumbo frets with which Paul refretted this powerhouse in 2009, and his tasteful aesthetic (the fuchsia rosette and purflings are here pulled off in handsome style). As if all of that weren’t enough, this Turbo also has a glass-smooth neck profile, with a slinky setup and low action for articulate, expressive playing.
