The first signature baritone of Paul Heumiller from Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars! Based on the specs of Paul’s original Mountain Song OD-J baritone, this beauty is dressed to the nines with fiery Padauk back and sides and Adirondack Spruce on top, and of course a multiscale setup of 28.5 to 27 inches for plenty of power and clarity across the range. Twin arm and rib bevels keep this big box comfortable in hand, and gold EVO frets insure it won’t need a fret job for a long time—unless of course it gets played all day every day like it deserves! Brand new, but already so expressive and articulate; there’s an organic, breathing quality to the voice that makes it clear this is a living thing in your hands.

A powerful example of modern lutherie from Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars, the man behind our very own repair shop. This 12-fret Odalisque model is a custom client collaboration that’s dressed up with Master German Spruce on top, Mun Ebony back and sides, and Flamed Koa bindings (plus arm bevel) throughout. The voice is dialed in for clarity, precision, and a sweet dynamic range that takes perfectly to fingerstyle, and thanks to Ken’s glassy setup and arm bevel the playing experience is one of effortlessness.

Ken Jones of Mountain Song Guitars is an old friend, just like this Baritone. This beauty was originally commissioned in 2014 for our own Paul Heumiller with Ken, and those two embarked on a collaboration that’s kept Paul bari happy for a number of years. Padauk back and sides offer crisp, clear projection and pair with Adirondack Spruce on top for power, power, power. A multiscale setup from 28 1/2” to 27 1/4” adds extra definition and pop to the bass register, and keeps those trebles sugar sweet on the tongue. The neck is carved with an asymmetrical profile that better matches a player’s hand geometry, and the body is further outfitted with twin arm and rib bevels for creature comfort—a wonderful thing on a big boy like this powerhouse Baritone with over 16” across the lower bout. That said, it weighs in at a trim 5lbs, so won’t wear you out anytime soon. Paul later had a James May Ultra Tonic pickup system installed, which sounds, frankly, absurdly good.
Here’s a little more from Paul: “This guitar was a wonderful collaboration between Ken Jones and myself. I selected my favorite specs from the many baritones we’ve sold over the years and incorporated them all into this guitar. Ken really nailed it tonally, ergonomically, and aethestically. I played this guitar every day and it inspired so many songs. For me that’s the sign of a great guitar: inspiration to play.”Click here to watch Paul play and discuss this beauty.

Ken Jones brings an eye for detail, an ear for tone, and a touch for modern aesthetics to his builds—our latest Mountain Song Odalisque model is exquisite. Mexican Ebony (Katalox) back and sides with some dramatic figuring are here paired with a creamy German Spruce top in this 000-inspired body for crisp note definition and balance between the registers. The bottom end has a particularly sweet, warm pop to it that really fills out the voice. 12 frets to the body with a 25.4” scale strikes a fine balance between power and intimacy, and we found this Odalisque as happy in Open G or D as in Standard—as Paul would say, this one has a lot of gears for fingerstyle. A slim arm bevel and low profile heel, with the venetian cutaway, make for an effortless player experience, and EVO frets will keep you away from a fret dress for quite some time to come.

Ken Jones’ latest brand new Odalisque packs several guitars’ worth of tone into one trim, 12-fret package. Tasmanian Blackwood back and sides, a pale set of Adirondack Spruce on top, twinned arm and rib bevels, oval soundhole–as usual, the works–and they work together so well. It’s always a pleasure to have a Mountain Song guitar in the shop (even if it’s just for an afternoon for photos and recording before sending it on to its happy new owner). We are grateful to continue to offer Ken’s excellent fingerstyle instruments, and for the myriad of repairs he and his team handle for us. These instruments cut no corners, and this Odalisque in particular offers an impressive blend of warmth in the lower mids and clarity in the bass and trebles.

Well, this is a first for us: we’ve never had a Mountain Song Odalisque come up for sale on the preowned market before! That alone should speak to the quality of this instrument, but humor us with a more thorough treatment (we do like talking about guitars, after all).
Dramatically figured Claro Walnut back and sides, Carpathian Spruce top, the interlocking rosette that Ken Jones has perfected, arm and rib bevels, Cosmo Black Gotohs—the list goes on. The voice is balanced between quick trebles and a warm lower mid response; the bass is focused. Responds well to a light touch, and if you dig in a bit the projection ramps up a lot. A natural choice for fingerstyle in standard tuning, DADGAD, or beyond.
Ken recently went over this 2013 Odalisque and gives it a clean bill of health. Fit and finish remains flawless. This is a rare opportunity to own a rare bird; who knows the next time another Mountain Song Guitar will be available?

Every time we get another of Ken Jones’ fine creations in the shop, we find he’s outdone himself yet again! This brand new 2016 Odalisque was custom built for one of our clients, who is probably playing it as we speak. Between the dense and tap-tone-lively Macacauba back and sides and Lucky Strike Redwood top, this Odalisque is a bombshell with six strings and a rich bottom end–the voice warm enough to keep you toasty on cold nights, the trebles clean and focused as a rifle shot.
The balance from string to string is stellar, and we found this to be even more apparent when dropped into DADGAD or Al’s CGCGAD tuning, where the bass strings remained snappy and the middle register turned its sweet warmth into a hearty blaze. Visually, this Mountain Song guitar is a study in fastidiousness: each joint perfectly mated, the bridge painstakingly carved, the sections of rosette seamlessly interwoven. Ken’s attention to detail has given this Odalisque a finely-honed appearance, with lightly flamed Maple bindings to tie it all together. If you’re interested in getting an Odalisque for your own fingerstyle arrangements, give us a shout!
SoldAdd to CompareNew Mountain Song Guitars Baritone OD-J Ziricote/Bearclaw Sitka
Ken Jones is one of our favorite luthiers, for ample reasons. Not only is he a maestro of repair and restoration services capable of restoring lost jewels to their former luster, but also in his own instruments we find the depth, balance, and dynamism of tone which separates masterwork fingerstyle guitars from their lesser cousins. Paul’s personal Baritone is a multiscale beast from Ken (and is the envy of everyone in the shop), and we’re stoked to have another Mountain Song Baritone pass through our doors!
Custom-built for one of our clients, this Baritone has dark-hued Ziricote for the back and sides and a sumptuously-grained Bearclaw Sitka Spruce top, and all is bound in Ebony and sports both an arm bevel and a rib rest, and a soundport in the upper bout. Featuring a fearsome 28 3/4″ scale length, this Mountain Song Baritone handles A tunings like a champ! The bass register is rich and enveloping, but retains a well-defined edge that further sets it apart from other Baritone guitars, and the trebles! The trebles! Dripping with fat tone like butter in the skillet.
With a smooth C profile neck and 1 3/4″ nut, this Baritone hardly feels like a bigger guitar at all: it feels as smooth and familiar as your first favorite guitar. Unfortunately, this guitar has already been passed along to its excited new owner, but if you’re interested in having one made for yourself, don’t hesitate to reach out!

We are extremely pleased to bring you this incredible custom ordered Mountain Song Odalisque in Tasmanian Tiger Myrtle and Alpine Spruce. We have known Ken for a long time, he has worked with us here at the shop behind the scenes for years, and has grown to be a truly great friend, Luthier, and repairman. We count on Ken. Ken’s evolution as a guitar builder has been a great joy to watch, he was building great guitars when we first met him, certainly, but now he is building a different kind of beast altogether. So good in fact that Dream guitars owner Paul Heumiller decided he even needed a Mountain song guitar for himself! This Odalisque represents everything we like to see in a custom built guitar, Incredible tone and playability of course and a great synthesis between builder and client. Ken and his client thought the Tiger Myrtle looked unusually like a Tasmanian Tigers pelt. They decided to run with that idea and included some great inlays of Tiger paws on the fingerboard and a Tasmanian Tiger on the head stock.
Now lets get to fun part, the tone. This Odalisque has trebles that will melt butter, they are powerful and warm without any shrillness, while the bass through mids are expertly balanced like few builders are able to achieve. This instrument is a wonder, we are sad that we didn’t get to keep around the shop a while longer! Without question Ken Jones is one of the up and coming “Big Boys” in the Luthiery community, keep both eyes on Mountain Song guitars, we sure are.

Who knew Cedar could be so loud? Kevin Muiderman, apparently. This 2012 Muiderman Wave has a double Cedar top, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, and enough volume and sustain to rattle the windows on the entire block. This model was originally developed for Martin Simpson, and features a slight body taper (the bass side is a bit narrower than the treble side) with the fretboard tapered in the opposite direction to keep your left hand comfortable. Additionally, Kevin installed an arm bevel and soundport, as well as gold EVO frets and a Florentine Cutaway.
This is the sort of guitar that goes from 0 to 100 with even a light touch. Kevin’s double top technique and use of composite braces makes for explosive projection and note clarity. You’ll be able to pick out each note in crisp detail. The neck carve is a smooth C shape, and the nut comes in at 1 11/16” for quick left hand work.
This Muiderman Wave is packing some serious heat.
