New Oxwood Handmade 00 Brazilian/Lutz
The point at which contemporary design meets traditional shapes, that is where this brand new 2016 Oxwood Handmade 00 resides. The Wenge-over-Bloodwood rosette and assymetrical headstock attest to Brad Daniels’ fresh taste, lending this guitar an exciting flavor which complements the curves of the 00 body of Brazilian Rosewood and Lutz Spruce without dominating the otherall aesthetic.
Everything about this guitar works together in a smooth, harmonious flow; from looks to tone, this Oxwood is a well-oiled machine. The voice has exactly what you’d expect from a 00–a warm and buttery midrange, articulate bass, easy playability–but the treble strings set it apart from the 00 crowd. The B and E strings are crisp but not tinny, fat but not floppy, bubbling with overtones and sustain. Lesser 00s run the risk of sounding plunky and small, but this Oxwood 00 has the full-figured presense of a much larger guitar. Interested? Act fast: instruments of Daniels‘ calibre seldom linger for long.

“Carmen,” fresh from Bradley Daniels‘ shop, sings like she’s got something to prove. We were taken aback when we first opened the case and tuned her up: how could so much voice project out of a body this size? Needless to say, Oxwood Handmade is setting the bar pretty high for competition. This multi-scale beauty comes to us with Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top in a curvaceous package teeming with energy. With Gold Evo frets adorning the fan-fret Ebony fingerboard at 25″ on the Low E and 24″ on the high E, Carmen is a shorter overall scale than folks are used to with multi-scale fingerboards, but the impact on the guitar’s tone is palpable. That Low E has a giant, round tone that perfectly complements the shimmers of the high E, and the warm, expressive strings between.Blessed with haunting sustain and excelling at lower tunings, Daniels‘ Carmen feels and plays like a smaller guitar, but sounds like a much bigger instrument. With understated and tasteful appointments like the Wenge rosette and backplate or the magnetic truss rod cover, the guitars from Oxwood Handmade make a powerful, poised statement.

Straight out of 1985, this Flamenco from Paco Santiago Marin is dangerous stuff, capable of reducing other Flamenco guitars to smoldering piles of Cypress and Spruce. The tone which comes belting out of this gorgeous mosaic-adorned soundhole is ferocious–and how could it not, with such a fine-grained set of Brazilian Rosewood for its backs and sides! With trebles that are crisp and present, and a low-end replete with thunderous sustain, it’s hard to imagine playing a wrong note across the 650mm scale. The balance across the registers is superb, and the setup (sweet and low for agile technique) lends a muscularity to Flamenco pieces that you just can’t find in an Cypress guitar. Marin’s skills are legendary, and rightly so: this guitar looks as crisp as the day the French Polish was applied in 1985 (and plays as crisply, too). Moreover, since the voice’s richness is amplified by such fetching Brazilian Rosewood, this guitar also performs flawlessly for other styles of music, making this more than simply a Flamenco instrument.

Powerhouse lutherie duo Claudio and Claudia Pagelli have been pushing the bleeding edge of guitarbuilding for decades now, yielding a fiercely independent and inventive body of work that completely stands apart from the crowd. We are so excited to be officially partnering up with them to bring you their latest and greatest!
Here we’ve got one of their 40th Anniversary models outfitted with Ovangkol back and sides, Moonspruce top, and some really incredible soundhole and soundport design work. Note the twin offset soundholes at the upper bout of the top? Flip around back for a soundport that’s integrated below the neck, and head over to the bass side lower bout for a rectangular soundport to round it all out. Additionally, the top is braced with continuous brace stock that spreads out at the ends in a vinelike fan that we’ve never seen before. The result is a very energetic and chirpy voice, with treble strings that absolutely kill, very clean and crisp. Wenge neck with a satin finish? Makes for a gossamer lefthand experience. Throw in a unique pinless bridge design and negative space headstock, and you’ve got a whole new kind of beast in your hands.

Powerhouse lutherie duo Claudia and Claudio Pagelli have been pushing the bleeding edge of guitarbuilding for decades now, yielding a fiercely independent and inventive body of work that completely stands apart from the crowd. We are so excited to be officially partnering up with them to bring you their latest and greatest!
This Gringobeat is a semihollow archtop with reimagined curves to maximize ergonomics without compromising an ounce of tone. Note the asymetrical bouts, which help position the guitar perfectly for your right hand; the silky setup and satin-finished Okoume neck; the aluminum arm rest and nickel hardware. The body is also Okoume, aged at least 25 years before use, and the top is a set of carved Swiss Alpine Moonspruce that is finished in the Pagellis’ 3D technique, which yields unique and different results each time. On this Gringobeat, the finish rises and falls across the surface, with lower layers letting the Spruce grain telegraph through. Running your hands over it is a delight. On the electronics front, we’re outfitted with triple Lollar Gold Foils plus a six-way switch for a wide, wide palette of tones (the first position towards the bridge actives the two outer pickups). Additionally, a KMS bridge plus Bigsby tailpiece, and Hipshot knobs, complete the package.

2015 is a very good year for the guitar world. Why? Because this is the year that the Massari was made by Pagelli, a monster of a jazz guitar dyed in blue that sings like gold. Only the choicest of woods were used in this build, from the Canadian Quilted Maple back and sides to the super rare Swiss Alpine “Moon” Spruce, so called because it’s only harvested according to a specific calender which follows lunar cycles to ensure the Spruce is lighter, and stronger, than its other brethren. So, acoustically, the Massari is filled to the brim with a sweet, fat voice–but when amplified, the custom-wound Haussel Humbucker transforms the guitar into a surgeon’s knife: immaculately clean, unerringly precise, aggressively responsive. The secret behind Haussel’s technique involves his use of poles in the middle, not unlike a single coil, so the pickup catches string vibrations at one defined point, creating an articulate single coil tone with none of the hum. Take it anywhere, throw any genre at it, and the Massari will keep up. You’ll want to practice more, just to play it. This guitar comes with the original Ameritage hardshell case.

Whether played in standard or DADGAD tuning, this OM maintains exceptional definition, depth, and harmonic richness. In a word: angelic.
Notes from Al Petteway back in 2016 when we first had this instrument – “This is an amazing guitar and is incredibly well-built and designed. I instantly fell in love with it. It gives back more than you give it, which is what I always look for in a good guitar.”

Armenian luthier Manouk Papazian, based in New York for much of his career, put together an impressive body of work, ranging from Classicals like this lovely piece to violins, cellos, and even lutes. The example we have today is a Brazilian Rosewood and Spruce Concert Classical from 1960 that’s opened up sweetly and only weighs just over four pounds. The trebles are characterized by a lively string energy and clarity, and really carry the voice well, pairing with a warm and responsive bottom end and articulate midrange. We’ve gone over it with our repair staff to give it a clean bill of health; it’s got some honest play wear, which reinforces our interpretation that it’s opened up a lot, and has a lovely setup to boot.

The strings mix up very evenly across the registers. This Torres model comes to us from 2000, and has opened up handsomely. We found that after a few minutes, it woke up even more—a responsive guitar, indeed.
