2007 Osthoff JS Koa/Sitka
John Osthoff has taken all of the disadvantages of a traditional Jumbo–overbearing dimensions, poorly balanced registers, unresponsiveness to light attack–and melted them away from the guitar before you now, until nothing but a smoothly articulate voice and exceedingly comfortable body remains which responds beautifully to a range of modes, from ballad to Bluegrass. Outfitted with a Manzer Wedge, this is a Jumbo which feels much more like an SJ in your arms; you’d be hard-pressed to call these voluptuous curves anything but comfortable. Thanks to a gorgeous, figured set of Koa for the back and sides, which is paired with a Sitka Spruce top, Osthoff’s Jumbo has a bright, dry tonality that’s superb for fingerpicking and lends itself to the smooth balance across the registers. This guitar might be from 2007, but to look at it you’d swear she was brand-new: there are virtually no signs of play wear (aside from the well-opened up voice). Coupled with an Ameritage hardshell case, it won’t be hard to keep it in pristine condition for many years to come.

Fresh from the 2015 Woodstock Invitational Guitar Showcase, we’ve got John Osthoff’s newest creation just itching to be played. Dubbed his Woodstock FS, this model features a Port Orford Cedar top and Higuerilla back and sides to create a voice with an even blend of big, warm projection and clean, balanced tones across the registers. Thanks to Osthoff’s lightweight build, the Woodstock FS has superb projection and the sort of sweet sustain that fingerstylists look for: open and passing chords ring very full and crisp, and Drop D lets the Port Orford Cedar’s warmth overflow.John’s eye-catching aesthetics help round out the image of this beautiful instrument. Featuring Sapwood bindings across the headstock, Ebony fretboard, and body and Osthoff’s handmade Japanese Maple Leaf inlay, you’ll want to play this one in a room with a mirror. Be careful with the Canary and Rosewood spiraling rosette, though–it’s easy to become hypnotized–or is that the sweet, rich tone? With deep, comprehensive articulation for fingerstylists and excellent construction for projection, this Woodstock FS from John Osthoff is ready to get down to business.
New Osthoff GP Mahogany/Italian
This Osthoff GP was hand chosen by us at the Woodstock guitar show, it was special right when we picked it up then, even in that loud environment. When we finally got it back here to the shop the first thing that was said when we all played it was “Wow.” This Osthoff is a full stop, jaw dropping, double taking kind of guitar, and that doesn’t do it justice. The tone is like hot mulled cider with a little honey and whiskey thrown in. There is no string on this guitar that doesn’t sing sweetly and have individual character. There really is only one way to fully understand how incredible this guitar is, and that is to come in and experience it in person. John kept the appointments simple on this one, old Mahogany and a perfect set of Italian Spruce, it is clean and elegant lines here. We are glad he chose not to fancy this one up to much, the tone of the guitar is the all out star, come in and hear this thing before someone buys it, The DG crew are already eyeing it pretty heavily for themselves!

Sustain is the first thing you might notice when you strum a chord on this wonderful Osthoff 000-12C guitar; the warm, clear tone seems to last forever. Maybe the culprit is the rare African Blackwood back and sides, or the Italian Spruce top. Both are premiere tonewoods coveted by builder and player alike. John Osthoff also voices this beautiful small-body guitar to be open and alive. It’s extremely comfortable to hold, the 12 fret neck reduces the reach of the left hand, but the cutaway insures full access to 15 frets. A sweetheart for sure.

From German luthier Otto Rauch we have a powerful example of the kind of richness and clarity a nylon string instrument can achieve. This 2009 “Mumbo Jumbo” Concert Classical is built from a beautiful set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides and an Italian Spruce top–and the latter gives this Classical its fierce projection. Designed with a smaller player in mind, this Classical features a narrow neck (1 3/4″ at the nut) and an elevated fingerboard extension for easy playability–if you’re interested in a Classical with a more accessible neck, this Rauch is the ticket!
We couldn’t find any wolf tones lurking within the fretboard, we’re happy to report, and while we we’re checking we discovered that the trebles have some angelic, haunting overtones that gave us goosebumps. Add to that a killer Fishman Matrix Infinity pickup/preamp, and you’ve got a powerhouse of a Classical!

This Ovation guitar belonged to legendary Folk Artist Josh White. In fact it was built to his specifications early in the Ovation company’s history. Josh White was a historic figure in music from the 1920s-60s and was a prominent player in this country’s race struggles. This very guitar is part of that history, for it was with his guitar that he did so much to help us all. We are honored to have this one of a kind instrument with an extremely collectable provenance. Comes complete with a video of Josh White performing on this guitar.
From Wikipedia.com: White grew up in the Jim Crow South. He later became a 1920s and 1930s star of race records, with a prolific output of recordings in genres including Piedmont blues, country blues, gospel, and social protest songs. He was billed in concert as “The Sensation of the South”.[citation needed] In 1931, White moved to New York and within a decade his fame had spread widely, and his repertoire expanded to include urban blues, jazz, Tin Pan Alley, cabaret, folk songs from around the world, and hard-hitting political protest songs. He soon was in demand as an actor on radio, Broadway, and film. However, his pioneering guitar playing never altered or diminished, while some would even argue it broadened with the expansion of his musical repertoire. White unarguably inspired several generations of guitarists with his new and unique stylings and techniques, and is cited as a major musical and social influence by dozens of future stars, including Blind Boy Fuller, Brownie McGhee, Pete Seeger, Lena Horne, Nat King Cole, Harry Belafonte, Lonnie Donegan, Eartha Kitt, Alexis Korner, Odetta, Ray Charles, Elvis Presley, the Kingston Trio, the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem, Merle Travis, Dave Van Ronk, Peter, Paul and Mary, Bob Dylan, Eric Weissberg, Judy Collins, Mike Bloomfield, Danny Kalb, Roger McGuinn, David Crosby, Richie Havens, Don McLean, Roy Harper, Ry Cooder, John Fogerty, and Eva Cassidy. Built in 2007 and ready for action! We’ve landed a gorgeous example of Dennis Overton’s work with this Dreadnought dressed up in Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce and bespoke candle inlay at the headstock. Overton worked with the one and only John Arnold for years, and it’s easy to so the influence of John’s traditional methods on Overton’s builds. Here the Brazilian is a surprisingly light colored set, and is set off with Ivoroid bindings that pair up nicely with the tight-grain Ady top. We’ve gone over this one tuners to tail and are happy to give it a clean bill of health. And we’ll be even happier to give it a new home! Give us a shout.

The point at which contemporary design meets traditional shapes, that is where this brand new 2016 Oxwood Handmade 00 resides. The Wenge-over-Bloodwood rosette and assymetrical headstock attest to Brad Daniels’ fresh taste, lending this guitar an exciting flavor which complements the curves of the 00 body of Brazilian Rosewood and Lutz Spruce without dominating the otherall aesthetic.
Everything about this guitar works together in a smooth, harmonious flow; from looks to tone, this Oxwood is a well-oiled machine. The voice has exactly what you’d expect from a 00–a warm and buttery midrange, articulate bass, easy playability–but the treble strings set it apart from the 00 crowd. The B and E strings are crisp but not tinny, fat but not floppy, bubbling with overtones and sustain. Lesser 00s run the risk of sounding plunky and small, but this Oxwood 00 has the full-figured presense of a much larger guitar. Interested? Act fast: instruments of Daniels‘ calibre seldom linger for long.

“Carmen,” fresh from Bradley Daniels‘ shop, sings like she’s got something to prove. We were taken aback when we first opened the case and tuned her up: how could so much voice project out of a body this size? Needless to say, Oxwood Handmade is setting the bar pretty high for competition. This multi-scale beauty comes to us with Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top in a curvaceous package teeming with energy. With Gold Evo frets adorning the fan-fret Ebony fingerboard at 25″ on the Low E and 24″ on the high E, Carmen is a shorter overall scale than folks are used to with multi-scale fingerboards, but the impact on the guitar’s tone is palpable. That Low E has a giant, round tone that perfectly complements the shimmers of the high E, and the warm, expressive strings between.Blessed with haunting sustain and excelling at lower tunings, Daniels‘ Carmen feels and plays like a smaller guitar, but sounds like a much bigger instrument. With understated and tasteful appointments like the Wenge rosette and backplate or the magnetic truss rod cover, the guitars from Oxwood Handmade make a powerful, poised statement.

Straight out of 1985, this Flamenco from Paco Santiago Marin is dangerous stuff, capable of reducing other Flamenco guitars to smoldering piles of Cypress and Spruce. The tone which comes belting out of this gorgeous mosaic-adorned soundhole is ferocious–and how could it not, with such a fine-grained set of Brazilian Rosewood for its backs and sides! With trebles that are crisp and present, and a low-end replete with thunderous sustain, it’s hard to imagine playing a wrong note across the 650mm scale. The balance across the registers is superb, and the setup (sweet and low for agile technique) lends a muscularity to Flamenco pieces that you just can’t find in an Cypress guitar. Marin’s skills are legendary, and rightly so: this guitar looks as crisp as the day the French Polish was applied in 1985 (and plays as crisply, too). Moreover, since the voice’s richness is amplified by such fetching Brazilian Rosewood, this guitar also performs flawlessly for other styles of music, making this more than simply a Flamenco instrument.
