From Laurent Brondel, “The 28” from 2023, a 28-style OM with the classic combo of Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce. It doesn’t get much better than this. These tonewoods, in this configuration, are the blueprint for modern fingerstyle guitar building. It’s what we expect and what we love about the medium. If you find yourself longing for a pre-war style instrument that is out of reach, this guitar may be the answer for you. Classic in every way—inspirational, comfortable, and accessible. What a powerhouse we have here in this 2010 A-1c by Laurent Brondel. Dressed in Malaysian Blackwood and German Spruce—Laurent’s guitars never disappoint and this is no exception. What is exceptional about this instrument however is the bracing. Loaded with a laminated “Larson-style” bracing–this guitar is built for power. It goes without saying there is plenty of headroom here, deep bass as well as strong and sparkling trebles. This dreadnought-sized cutaway is comfortable in hand. Roomy and spacious in both feel and sound. Laurent’s signature arched, rather than domed, top and back certainly contribute to this sense of comfort. As well as the warm and natural aesthetic, this Brondel A-1c feels like home.

This Leo Buendia Jumbo in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka spruce is phenomenal! The Sitka top is an incredible, 200-year-old set with insanely tight grain across its length. Leo was a Somogyi apprentice, and the tonal heritage is apparent. The whole sound pallet is full and lush from string to string each note is a pleasure to hear, it must be experienced, not just heard. Ethereal, mesmerizing, magical, all of these words don’t do this guitars justice. Hours spent playing this Buendia will just fly by, it is that engrossing. The craftsmanship is as good as we have seen just about anywhere. This is a guitar more than one person in this shop would love to keep for themselves!

Bastien Burlot has been a staple of French lutherie for years, having built guitars for such giants as Thomas Viloteau and the late Roland Dyens, cultivating a unique voice that combines the power and presence of modern styles with the warmth and elegance of tradition for a simultaneously fresh, and timeless, flavor. Recently, Burlot launched a new project that ties these two ideas even more snugly: the Alkemia Series. These Classicals are inspired by the most famous cathedrals in France, with the first in this series being the Alkemia Chartres Cathedral (found about an hour outside of Paris). The tightly patterned mosaic rosette is modeled directly after the stained glass windows of the church, and inside the guitar the label features a labyrinth in homage to the floor of the cathedral’s nave. Here pilgrims have gathered for hundreds of years to walk the labyrinth in contemplation.

Incredible for nearly any application, it would be hard for a guitar enthusiast of any persuasion or background not to feel somewhat enamored by this jazz box, which, quite frankly, can do so much more. A note from Paul on the build process:
I really enjoy the process of custom building instruments for players. I got into this whole business because I’m a player first and a songwriter. As a player, I have intimate knowledge of what makers, body shapes, woods, and other attributes of a guitar will most help a player get to their dream instrument. It’s really important to me that a guitar inspires a player to make music. That’s the whole reason I started this business long ago.
I see this process of working with a client and a builder as service. To me, it’s an important part of my life and something I’m really passionate about. The process along the way can be as detailed or relaxed as you want and I guarantee you it is always fun. We start usually by talking about the woods that will get the tone that you want after I hear more about what you play and what you’d like to be able to play. Then we will go on to looking at photos of actual sets of materials and talk about everything from the nut width to the saddle width to the case color that you want. We will then get into the details of the instrument as far as the feel goes and the ergonomics. There’s a lot to talk about here and we have a lot of experience again because of all the guitars we’ve played over the years. We’ll talk about the contour of the neck and we have a special process for that where we use a tool that we can send you to give us shapes of your favorite guitar necks which we can then use as a basis or even completely copy.
Another big value that Dream Guitars has to offer in this process is our shop full of amazing guitars. After we get your initial specs down, you’re welcome to visit the shop as sometimes we will have months before the build starts. You and I can sit and play the world’s finest guitars and confirm that the choices we made are right for you as far as the wood types and specs and you also might find some ideas you want to Incorporate, maybe an armrest bevel, a soundport, or even something you’ve never tried before. Along the way my team and I will be talking to the builder on your behalf and making sure that you get exactly what you want in the end.
The custom guitar world can be really confusing. There’s so many makers now and so many different materials and body shapes, you need someone to really guide you through all the options. One of the big parts of my job is to go to various guitar shows every year all around the world so that I can see what’s happening. I meet with all the makers I’ve been working with for sometimes decades and I stay in touch with what they’re changing, what their new models are, what they have to offer, and what their sounds are evolving into. I also get a chance to visit many of the maker’s shops so that I can be very familiar with what they do, what they love to do, what they don’t want to do, what woods they like, what woods they don’t like, so that I can give you really objective third-party advice all along the way.
By working with you directly myself I allow the builder to stay at the workbench whittling wood and making guitars. While this frees them up a bit, they are always available as well should you really want to have a conversation with the builder. We will facilitate that as well. We always see it as a three way partnership.
Another thing that’s really important to me is the personalities involved in each instrument so I get to know the makers really well year year after year, every time I visit with them at guitar shows, visit their shops, or just have a meal with them. I think their personalities come through in the end result of the guitar so as I’m getting to know you and matching you with the builder I’ll be keeping all of that in mind as well.
The bottom line is this. I’ve been playing guitar since I was ten years old. Every time I have the opportunity to help a client find a guitar of their dreams, that inspires them to make music, it feels like my life’s purpose.
I look forward to helping you build a guitar that will inspire you and I promise we’ll have fun all along the way.

Kevin Caton brings a fresh eye to the modern flattop scene with his Sullivan model and its combination arm bevel-soundport design. This is our latest guitar from Kevin, decked out with Madagascar Rosewood back and sides and Italian Spruce on top plus that über unique arm bevel and a cutaway. A geometric motif sets off the rosette and headstock; elsewhere the quality of the woods speak for themselves. All wrapped up in a Visesnut flight case.

Kevin Caton’s Carolina model packs a wallop. With a 16 inch lower bout, this Carolina has lots of real estate for tone generation, which the Macassar Ebony body and Carpathian Spruce top take immediate advantage of. Great headroom allows for a heavier attack, with a strong fundamental in the bass register and some sparkling overtones on the top end. Kevin’s asymmetrical upper bout design allows for easy fingerboard access without compromising the amount of air the body can move, and looks fresh and modern to boot. When you factor in the geometric motifs at the endgraft, rosette, heelcap, and headplate, this Caton Carolina stands out from the crowd in all the right ways.

Our latest Claxton comes in a sharp-dressed suit with a voice to match. This 2003 EM-C is decked out with Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Adirondack Spruce on top, and a slick rosette of geometric patterns for a feather in its cap. Lightweight and agile, this Claxton has a bell-like quality to the trebles that helps cut right through the mix, and we found the bass and lower mids paired will to flesh out the voice. The setup is glass-smooth and a breeze on the hands; drinks up both flatpicks and fingertips like water on a hot day.
It doesn’t take much to get the Red Spruce top singing, and that’s regardless of if your in standard tuning or more adventurous territory. We get a special feeling when we come across an exceptional set of Brazilian Rosewood, and that’s exactly how we felt when we pulled the one out of the case. It’s got lovely curving grain patterns with black ink lines, but is not so dramatically figured that we’d worry about the wood holding up to the vagaries of time humidity. The neck carve is a touch on the slim side of life to help facilitate that aforementioned glassy playability, and there’s a standard 25.4” scale, 1.75” nut, and 2.25” saddle spacing that’ll feel familiar at first strum.
Does this 2003 Claxton EM-C have any drawbacks? Maybe, but for the life of us we can’t find one.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, handbuilt, brazilain, emc, em c, cutaway, calton case, flight case

It is an exquisite treat to have this 2010 Claxton EM-C in your hands. The voice is crisp, with added sweetness in the mids and treble for a great mix of warmth and precision; fingerstyle rarely sounds so fine as it does here. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides are augmented with gorgeous ink lines and dramatic figure; Spruce on top which has opened up oh so well; silky setup that’s as easy as breathing. How to go wrong with this guitar? The only way we can think is to not play it. Ed has recently retired–congrats, Ed!–meaning there won’t be any more guitars like this coming down the line. All wrapped up in a sturdy Calton case for maximum safety.
