2008 Sheppard Madrigal GC, Amazon/German Spruce
Neck deep in the guitar world for years, Gerald Sheppard has honed both his eyes and ears to pick out the best tonewood possible, and to appoint his instruments in fine style. This 2008 Madrigal Grand Concert comes to us with Amazon Rosewood back and sides (straight-grained and chocolate-dark), German Spruce on top, Koa bindings, and Blue Paua Abalone trim. Gold Gotoh 510 tuners are smooth operators, and between the posts you’ll find a carefully cut rose inlaid into the headstock. Fossilized Walrus Ivory nut and saddle, Venetian Cutaway, and delicate red body purflings complete the picture.
This Sheppard has had 10 years to open up, and to our ears it hasn’t wasted a single day. Extra pop in the middle register, coupled with crisp trebles, makes for a focused voice that projects clarity, and a tinge of warmth with a soft attack.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, fingerstyle, amazonian rosewood, fossil ivory

To make a good day even better, pick up this 2005 Dream Series from Gerald Sheppard for a spin around town. Number two in the series, this Grand Auditorium marries a slinky bass response with cracklin’ trebles and fierce projection. Part of that comes from the combination of Carpathian Spruce and African Blackwood: the rest comes from Gerald’s tone sculpting genius and a few years’ playing to open up.
Striking sapwood in the Blackwood is bookmatched across the back and headstock, creating a rich contrast of dark and light. There’s just a hint at the bottom of the rosette as well. Over the fretboard extension you’ll find a Tom Ellis floral design inlaid in Mother of Pearl. Gold-and-Ebony Gotoh 510s, Cedar Creek case, Venetian Cutaway—ask, and you shall receive. Give us a ring for an in-hand description of the smooth-as-sin string balance and rich basses on this Dream Machine from Gerald Sheppard.

The 2010 Sheppard Madrigal we’ve got in the shop today is a special kind of beast. Not only is it a 12-string guitar in East Indian Rosewood and Engelmann Spruce, it’s also south paw friendly! And it boasts basically every special feature and custom option that Gerald Sheppard offers. You name it, the lefty Madrigal’s got it. Arm, rib, and cutaway bevel: check. L.R. Baggs I-Mix preamp and pickup system: ready to rock. Blue Paua rosette, back strip, and inlay: stunning. Deluxe “American Vintage” hardshell case and Mammoth Fossilized Ivory nut and saddle: you bet. Unfortunately for everyone in the shop, we aren’t left-hand players, so we aren’t able to bring out the full potential of this awesome creature, but from what we’ve been able to pick out sounds absolutely rich and resonant, with a low-end that is well-balanced and maintains pitch like a pro. This guitar is five years old, but to look at it you wouldn’t guess it was older than five months; it’s in almost mint condition. If you’re a left-handed player who’s tired of settling for cheaper guitars without all the bells and whistles that your right-handed brethren seem to have a monopoly on, this Sheppard Madrigal 12-string is seriously worth your time. We can say with confidence that there aren’t many options on the market right now that can compare to this south paw powerhouse.

Here is a stunning Sheppard Ave Maria model in silky European Spruce and Cocobolo. The beauty of this guitar is absolutely second to none — Gerald has a keen eye for visual grace, exemplified perfectly in this body shape and adorned with abalone trim of remarkable depth and color. The guitar is incredibly comfortable as well, thanks to the arm bevel, ribrest bevel, and even a small bevel in the cutaway. We’ve saved the best for last — the tone and playability are just perfect. A robust low end has lots of chime while mids and highs sing out like a small orchestra.

African Blackwood is one of the most sought after woods these days for high-end guitars. Not just because of it’s beauty, but for it’s utterly sweet voice and superb sustain. It’s harder to find than even Brazilian, particularly in 2 piece backs. Our Dream Series from Gerald Sheppard all have amazing sets of rare African Blackwood including dramatic sapwood section which Gerald showcases in the back, headplate, bindings and rosette and butt wedge. He really makes the most of the natural beauty of the Blackwood. But you need only listen to the clips of Al Petteway playing these guitars to hear the magic. You can absolutely and easily hear what African Blackwood brings to the voice, pure, sweet and honest tone.

These Gerald Sheppard Dream Guitar never cease to amaze us. The African Blackwood is an incredible tonewood and is prized among makers of high end woodwind instruments. It’s no wonder that it sounds equally good on an acoustic guitar. It’s denser than Brazilian and has some of the same characteristics – Dark and rich with brilliant highs.

Mike Byle, veteran of the guitar building world, has implemented decades of practice and experimentation in his new line of personal instruments under the label Sifel Creek Guitars, and we couldn’t be happier with the results! This 000-12 Fret has an easy richness across all the registers which translates into lush arrangements for fingerstyle and fat, juicy solos with a flatpick.
Cocobolo is always gorgeous, but the set for this back and sides is another order of magnitude, and is offset by curly Koa bindings and a celtic knot inlaid into the heel cap. For the Tunnel 13 Redwood top, Mike added an ultra-thin lamination of Spruce to strengthen the Redwood and allow the braces to be measureably lighter–the result is a Redwood top which approaches Spruce in its projection! Add to that a 12-fret neck for even more warmth, and you’re looking at an instrument which plays effortlessly and with a knack for dynamic, full technicolor arrangements.

Mike Byle’s Sifel Creek Guitars have been cooking up splendid guitars for years now, and recently sent us two beauties which he’s had in his shop as show models for a few years now. This, his 15.5″ Cutaway, is done up in a pretty set of Madagascar Rosewood for the back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top with some gorgeous alternating color across the grain. Set up for a nimble left hand, this guitar plays like milk chocolate tastes: absolutely smooth.
Dynamically voiced by Byle, the responsiveness of the 15.5″ Cutaway manages to strike a balance between a delicate touch and a more aggressive attack, meaning that soft passages sound full-figured and delicate but when you need to dig in for some extra snap (say, for a Funk-Blues bass line), the voice cranks up to volume 11 with ease. Craving overtones in your trebles? These unwound strings are adorned with a subtle array of overtones which blossom a moment after the fundamental response.
You’ll be hard-pressed to find another guitar so exquisitely balanced. Although this guitar was built in 2010, it’s enjoyed a posh existence in Mike’s shop, and as such is still a brand new guitar (plus a few years of opening up).

Mike Byle’s Sifel Creek Guitars has been cooking up splendid guitars for years now, and recently sent us two beauties which he’s had in his shop as show models for a few years now. This 2008 15″ Cutaway has a gorgeous set of Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides that’s married to its Adirondack Spruce top with tasteful Maple bindings and a Venetian Cutaway. Add to that a soundport in the upper bout and a 13-fret neck, and we’re looking at a not-so-run-of-the-mill, deceptively understated fingerstyle machine.
The setup is ideal for players who prefer to bounce from tuning to tuning, and the 13-fret neck warms up the voice without sacrificing access to the upper frets. If warm, present mids, punchy trebles, and sonorous bass notes are your thing, this 15″ Cutaway more than fits the bill. Although this guitar was built in 2008, it’s enjoyed a posh existence in Mike’s shop, and as such is still a brand new guitar (plus a few years of opening up).
