2005 Traugott Model R Brazilian/German Spruce
Al and I have probably played more Traugott guitars than most people on the planet and we can honestly tell you that this one is special. The voice is simply magical, the perfect balance of rich, substantial trebles and warm, round bass. Every note from the Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce body is articulate and refined. I’ve had the joy of watching many non-believers jaw drop as they play a Traugott and realize the difference is for real. The short scale makes it a joy to play all night long. This one had a minor repair during construction and so is also very reasonably priced for one of the best guitars you’ll ever play. Comes complete with a Calton and a McIntyre pickup installed.

This is a fine piece of modern archtop lutherie if ever we’ve seen it. Bryant Trenier’s approach with the Motif model is plainly dressed, all the better to showcase a rich and expressive voice and high quality tonewoods. European Spruce top carved with an X brace pattern and oval hole; carved Mahogany back and sides, venetian cutaway plus a 3″ body depth for easy playability–and this resonant beauty weighs in under five pounds. Trenier designed this 2008 Motif with acoustic fingerstyle play in mind, and at that it certainly excels. There’s also good headroom for a pick attack. The neck has had the finish smoothed down for a bare wood feel that feels, well, perfect, with an overall full profile that just fits. This instrument is currently purely acoustic, but the pickup jack from a previous pickup remains installed should you choose to amplify.

Nylon-string players, you won’t want to miss out on an opportunity this sweet! We’ve got a 2007 Trinity Bent Top in the shop today, which could more accurately be called the Trifecta: the perfect combination of French Polished Western Red Cedar for warmth, Indian Rosewood for richness, and luthier innovations to make playability effortless.
Where many Classical guitars tend to lean towards a bass-heavy voice or one emphasizing only the upper register, the Trinity takes the best of both worlds and gives its player an exceptionally well-balanced voice. With string-to-string separation that borders on surgeon-precise, there’s little chance for even the subtlest techniques to go unnoticed, and the glass-smooth profile of the neck makes you forget there’s a neck at all! Tone aside, this Trinity Classical continues to impress with the combination of Jim Holler’s Bent Top construction, which improves upper fret access while not compromising the dimensions of the sound chamber, and his Player Response system, which adds a soundport to the upper bout to increase the midrange response of the guitar, and to increase the amount of tone which the player (at last!) is able to hear while they play. From Bossa Nova to Francisco Tarrega, Jazz to Bach, this Trinity will give you only the sweetest trebles and the most resounding bass notes.

Dennis Scannell’s True North guitars have an unerring accuracy and clarity that makes for exquisite acoustic detail. This 2007 Model 2 is the perfect fingerstylist’s tool. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (arrow-straight grain), “Lucky Strike” Redwood, and a 25.8” scale all come together in a rich, resonant voice that’s perfect for altered tuning territory. The Grand Auditorium body shape gives extra depth to the bass response, but this True North still plays handsomely and without effort; it rewards a light attack with a lush splay of overtones across the mids and trebles. This one features Dennis’s Platinum Upgrade P ackage, which includes a tapered body, Calton flight case, semi-hemispherical fret ends, and a double graphite-reinforced neck.

Dennis Scannell incorporates a number of sophisticated and worthwhile design features into his guitars. The tapered/wedge body shape is something we love, it keeps the bass controlled and in balance on a larger guitar and also greatly enhances comfort. Dual graphite neck reinforcements, along with the truss rod, make for great stability when moving between tunings. On the outside you get precise and beautiful craftsmanship in every detail. The voice of this guitar is warm and very clear and in balance. Ziricote and Redwood combine beautifully to make this a superb fingerstyle guitar and very capable for altered tunings.

Rick Turner’s approach to flattop construction is, naturally, outside of the box. This 2006 Compass Rose is designed to maximize the resonance of the Spruce top, and that is achieved by an elevated fingerboard and neck that cantilevers out over the upper bout. The entire top is free to operate as a vibrating plate, and that results in added power, color, and projection. Additionally, the neck-body join is fully adjustable, meaning the Compass Rose’s setup will always be right where you need it. The body assembly boasts a gorgeous set of Indian Rosewood that is tied into the Spruce top with half herringbone trim. The bridge design harkens back to early romantic guitars with its elongated wings. An L.R. Baggs Lyric mic pickup has been installed which sounds frankly fabulous.

Add to that a shallowly-radiused fingerboard that’s great for slide playing, too, and a chambered Mahogany body with a Cedar core for girthy sustain, and the options become even more multitudinous! This is the sort of high-end electric guitar which can put entire collections out to pasture.
