2004 Beardsell 4G #74 Quilted Maple/Adirondack
Dynamic as the day is long. We’re talking about a Beardsell flattop guitar that’s equally at home for celtic DADGAD fingerstyle one afternoon, chunky gypsy jazz that evening, and strummed folk songs the next morning. All the while with an oil-slick quick assymetrical neck, dual soundports for music straight to you ear and an extra dose of breathiness, and some gorgeous Quilted Maple and Adirondack Spruce to admire between sets
Beardsell voiced this 2004 4G for excellent balance, and brother did he succeed. The trebles cut well in the mix, sandwiching some punchy mids with a transparent bass response that remains crisp and responsive all the way into C tunings. This 4G has the makings to be a fine studio guitar, but it also makes for a great one for gigs, especially with the L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup.

Here we have a Beardsell Style 2 in Cherry and Spruce. This Style 2 has a big, raucous voice that is unique and fully engrossing, reminiscent of a great Selmer guitar. This one excels at jazz and single line soloing in a larger setting, but has the versatility to emote even intricate fingerstyle in more intimate surroundings. The soundport design puts you right inside the voice of this guitar, enabling you to hear every nuance of the sound before it ever makes its way to the crowd. And though this one might have a 12 fret neck joint, the heel transition and cutaway ensure that you can solo up as high as you like with ease. If you love a good Jazz box but want more substance to your sound, look no farther.
2006 Beardsell 2G Indian/Sitka
Allan Beardsell is one of the true innovators of guitar making and his instruments are some of our very favorites. This Beardsell 2G certainly does not look traditional and that’s because it is not. The Beardsell design employs sides stiffened with a layer of Birdseye Maple for a drum like power and projection. A radially braced back and perfectly voiced top join forces to maximize the use of energy. Don’t let the small soundhole fool you, there are two more on the side that let all of the sound out. The voice is perfect for both fingerstyle and chord work. One of most loved features is his asymmetrical neck profile. The bass side is shaved down a bit compared to the treble side, for a great feel. The Indian Rosewood and Sitka spruce are aged and played to full expression. An Armrest Bevel and a McIntyre Feather pickup make this a great choice for a gigging musician.

Alan Beardsell walks his own path, thankfully for us that means he’s creating instruments that are completely unique and exciting. But it’s not just the asymmetrical shape that is new, there large side ports, armrests and radial back bracing as well. All of which help give Beardsell instruments the strongest projection we know of in a wood body, clarity, articulation and extreme comfort. This 4G is his larger body and has a big sound. Most of our Beardsell presell, we are happy to have a few to offer you for a change, but they won’t last so don’t delay.

Beardsell guitars are completely unique and offer a wonderous tonal palette. Though the soundhole is Macafferi inspired, the guitar is all flattop. But Allan employs radial back bracing, doubled sides and achieve an very strong projection and clarity. There are two side soundports that insure the player and the audience both get a great tone. This guitar is well played in and very vibrant and alive. As a dealer we only get 1-2 new instruments each year an preowned ones are very hard to find.

In our experience, it’s difficult for a builder to thread the needle and build both nylon string and steel string guitars with equal skill. Mario Beauregard, for one, manages to make it look easy: this nylon string crossover is just as resonant and responsive as his steels. This beauty comes to us from 2008 with a carved Indian Rosewood back—similar to what John Buscarino does with his Cabaret crossovers—and a Cedar top with an elevated fingerboard and bent top profile in the upper bout to allow for easier access to the entire fingerboard, all the way to the 20th fret extension. With a slightly radiused fretboard and cutaway, this Nylon Jazz crossover becomes effortlessly playable. The carved back design creates a bigger air cavity without making the instrument actually feel bigger, the result being added power, projection, and bass response. Coupled here with Cedar on top for warmth and sweetness. When you want to go electric, the installed K&K Pure Mini pickup can take you there with a wonderfully faithful amplification of the aforementioned qualities of sweetness and response. Alessi tuners and a carved headstock veneer, plus Koa rosette, complete the picture of a perfect crossover.

A work of functional art. We’ve loved Mario Beauregard’s guitars for so many years, and even so it feels like a new experience every time we have the pleasure of hosting one of his guitars in the shop. Here we’ve landed one of his coveted Facettes archtops, which by itself is incredible, but this 2015 Facettes has the added distinction of featuring a carved Brazilian Rosewood back. The result is truly remarkable. Not only has Mario painstakingly carved these curvaceous facettes into the top and back, he’s done so with a wood combination of European Spruce on top and BRW back and sides that you’re likely to hardly see ever again on an archtop guitar. Additional features include a custom Benedetti humbucker pickup, EVO frets, and a lightweight BAM case.

1999 Beauregard SJ, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
Here’s a bombshell from Mario Beauregard that’s aged in and opened up handsomely. This beautiful SJ was built in 1999 with brick-red Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and an amber-hued German Spruce top, Ebony bindings, and Maple appointments. 16 1/2” across the lower bout adds growl and projection to an already powerful voice, and the overall tone strikes a fine balance between richness and precision. Overtones enrich the voice but don’t overpower the clarity of individual notes. It’s easy to see why modern fingerstyle players like the inimitable Antoine Dufour play Beauregards—these instruments make every note count. This beau has opened up so sweetly over the past few decades, and we’re proud to offer it to you today.

2005 Beauregard OMC, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
Playing this guitar is bliss. Mario Beauregard is undoubtedly one of the finest luthiers working today for fingerstyle players. His instruments are the trifecta of playability, projection, and clarity. This 2005 OM is all that and more, from the beautiful Brazilian Rosewood back and sides and German Spruce top to the glassy setup. Regardless of tuning or attack, fingerstyle or flatpicked, this Beauregard offers up a velvet-rich response. Bass notes are enveloping, and treble overtones hang in the air for long seconds. The tone remains balanced at all times, even if played with an aggressive attack, and pours its sweet honey over your every note. This Beauregard could mean the end of your collection: it’s capable of anything, so why would you ever want to play anything else?

Mario Beauregard made a beautiful, resonant instrument in 2000 with this OMC–then in 2007 he had a second chance to polish it until it shined! In order to implement his latest voicing techniques, Mario retopped this OM and replaced the neck with one that featured the glassy profile it now boasts. That brand new German Spruce top, when paired the drop-dead gorgeous set of Brazilian Rosewood for the back and sides, gave this guitar a visual and acoustic aesthetic that’s summed up in one word: elegant.
The contour of the neck and 1 3/4″ nut feel smooth and intimate for the left hand, and the setup is dialed into that sweet spot for both fingerstyle and flatpicking. Digging into the bass strings brings out a panoply of rich, vibrant notes that fill out, rather than overpower, the voice; the name of Mario’s game here is balance, balance, balance. For the altered tunings guitarist, this Beauregard offers excellent string-to-string separation and trebles which maintain their crisp shimmer down into D tunings. Having opened up handsomely, this OMC has the dynamic and rich fundamental that professional musicians across the globe yearn for in their sweetest dreams.
