Bourgeois Martin Simpson 1 of 25 East Indian/Adirondack (Red)
If you missed the Bourgeois Martin Simpson we had in the store a few months ago, now’s your chance to strike while the iron’s hot! Speaking of heat, you’d best take care when handling this guitar: she’s hot to trot and as loud as a firecracker. Maybe that doesn’t quite capture the kind of heat that this hotrod’s putting out; let’s say what this guitar really is: a big-voiced cannon with just 12 frets. Her previous owner is a gigging musician (which is why she comes with a Highlander IP-2 pickup and mic), so rest assured, the East Indian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce have been completely opened up, rendering the voice huge, yet balanced, and effortlessly responsive. This is #1 of 25 Limited Edition Martin Simpsons that Bourgeois built when they were first introducing the model, and was owned by Mr. Simpson himself! That makes this guitar Martin Simpson’s Martin Simpson–twice the Simpson, double the tone.
The bass is warm and well-defined, and the trebles are nothing short of ecstatic–and she eats up lowered tunings as though they were snacks. DADGAD, Drop D, CFA#D#GC–you name it, this guitar can handle it. With so many options at your hands, it’d be great to make the decision of what to play easier by being better-suited for fingerstyle or flatpicks, but the fact of the matter is this guitar sounds equally stellar with both approaches, so the sky’s the limit for how you play, and in what tuning. We’ve just reset the Mahogany neck and refretted the Ebony fretboard (and to top it off added a new saddle), so she’s ready to rumble for decades to come. We have a snugly fitting TKL hardshell case to keep this Bourgeois Martin Simpson from harm.

Who would have thought that this 1998 Bourgeois Martin Simpson signature edition would excel at lowered tunings? It seems that Mr. Simpson’s prediliction for DADGAD and other dropped tunings has permeated this particular instrument, such that its voice–punchy and articulate, with a clean, driving tone–really opens up once those strings get loosened. The best part: in lowered tunings the guitar maintains a good, clean tone; no buzzy and muddy strings! The Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce top go very well together to give the guitar lots of pop. The setup of this particular instrument is superb for flatpicking or fingerstyle, and thanks to that generous Fallaway cutaway you have virtually unrestricted access to the entire fretboard.

Here we have a Bourgeois “The Soloist” OMC in Brazilian Rosewood and Torrefied Aged Tone Adirondack (Red) Spruce. Bourgeois guitars command attention and respect throughout the entire acoustic guitar world, they are known for their quality of build and wonderful, lush tone. Torrefication is a new development in the luthiery community. It is the process of baking tonewoods in a low oxygen environment, rendering the woods to a truly “aged” effect, both sonically and visually. Add to that the fact that this one is made with all hide glue construction and a top-of-the-line varnish finish and you have an instrument that will blow you away.
Upon first playing this guitar something is instantly recognizable as being different: The tone is full and unbridled, there is seemingly nothing to get in the way of the pure tone of the woods. Simply put, this guitar sounds like a well broken in, decades old instrument. And while you may want to chalk all of this great tone up to the Torrefied topwood, we are inclined to say it is a whole recipe that gives this guitar its magical voice. And that recipe is as follows: 1. Expert construction from a master builder. 2. Superb quality woods. 3. Torrefication. 4. A thin Varnish finish. 5. Well thought out and beautiful design. Season to taste and bake at 350 for a perfect all around guitar.

This Bourgeois Martin Simpson Model was a collaboration between fingerstyle master Martin Simpson and luthier Dana Bourgeois. The idea was a fingerstyle 12 fret slope D that would provide power missing in many fingerstyle instruments and also work well for strumming and flatpicking. The addition of a fallaway cutaway that grants full access to the 15th fret and generous string spacing make it an oustanding fingerstyle guitar and one of those rare designs happy to flatpick as well. This one is Indian Rosewood and Spruce for a classic tone.
