2018 Steve Fischer Aria, Honduran Mahogany/Yellow Cedar
Steve Fischer builds steel strings to respond as well as classicals—and his petite Aria model is a fingerstylist’s favorite. This beauty from 2018 is approximately a 00 proportionately, with an intimate and engrossing voice that scales well when you lean in with a more aggressive attack. The fan-braced Alaskan Yellow Cedar top is responsive to a T, and its warmth pairs up nicely with the dry projection of its Honduran Mahogany back and sides. 25 1/4” scale threads the needle between crisp and round tones, and keeps playability effortless. Steve upgraded this one with a sultry sunburst on top and Spalted Maple rosette, Quilted Sapele bindings, slotted headstock, and Waverly tuners. Additionally, this Fischer Aria is outfitted with an L.R. Baggs Lyric pickup system, which faithfully translates the warmth and precision right into amplified territory. Weighs in under four pounds! Petite, yet powerful.

A beautiful thing. Here Steve Fischer pairs Cocobolo and Lutz Spruce with a fingerstyle fretboard and L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup in his Concerto body: the result is elegance and power. The setup is velvet smooth, and the way notes roll out of the soundhole you’d think there was a matching velvet carpet on the inside. Individual notes in the bass and mid ranges have an extra dose of definition, keeping complex chords articulate, while the trebles cut through with a cool and crisp response.
A fingerstyle guitar needs to have a voice dialed in for clarity and dynamic response. A guitar for fingers needs to have a specific brand of sustain, where notes retain definition as they decay, where overtones accompany, rather than overcharge. This 2013 Fischer Concerto threads the needle for each of these requirements. It’s with guitars like these that we’re reminded of just how much beauty a single luthier’s touch can bring to raw Spruce and Rosewood. This is not one you’ll want to miss.Other keywords: lutherie, finger style, fingerpick, fingerpicking, dadgad, altered tuning, open tuning, gotoh, venetian cutaway

Steve Fischer’s spin on the nylon string crossover dips its pen in the company ink of both flattops and classicals for exceptionally playability and responsiveness. Our 2015 Moderna is done up in European Maple and Engelmann Spruce, features a slight fretboard radius and cutaway as creature comforts, and is bound in Rosewood and purfling for an elegant presentation.
The Euro Maple body lends a hint of dryness to the upper mids and trebles that really helps them cut through the mix, while the bass retains a balance between warmth and clarity to round out the voice. The nut is wider than average for a steel string at 1 29/32”, but not as wide as a traditional classical—this means those complex chord shapes are that much easier to fret without added string buzzes from overlapping fingers. A trim punching weight of 3lb 8oz makes this a crossover guitar that’s difficult to put down, period.

This brand new 2016 Fischer Concerto will snag you hook, line, and sinker–from the flawless string-to-string balance to the astonishing clarity in the bass, this guitar is a knockout. Steve picked some beautiful Flamed European Maple for the back and sides (which also adorns the headstock) and paired it with a creamy Engelmann Spruce top, bound in Cocobolo.
Visually, the Concerto is a classic study in light and dark, right down to the graceful arcs of Maple and Ebony and Cocobolo which make up the rosette. Beneath these gorgeous appointments lurks a voice that practically leaps out of the soundhole. Dig into the strings, and the Concerto just gets louder and louder, without losing the warm, focused edge to the bass notes or the focused trebles. Flatpicks and fingertips perform equally well, and dropping into DADGAD is a joy: regardless of what you play, this Fischer Concerto knocks it out the park, down the street, and over the state lines.

With a background in building guitars for McPherson and in designing the acoustic line for Paul Reed Smith, Steve Fischer has honed his lutherie skills to razor-sharp with the introduction of his own line of Steve Fischer Guitars. His exceptional talent is ever-present in this Moderna nylon crossover, made with gorgeous Madagascar Rosewood and Alaskan Yellow Cedar. The sweet, focused tone of the Cedar top is immediately evident, and is complimented perfectly by the Madagascar Rosewood back and sides, creating a voice that’s both utterly musical and authoritative. The narrower neck and radiused fingerboard make this an ideal instrument for the steel string player wanting to expand their collection with a nylon string.

Dressed to the nines with dramatic Brazilian Rosewood and Carpathian Spruce on top, Ebony bindings throughout, and nickel Schaller tuners with matching Ebony buttons. The Carpathian has opened up handsomely in the past decade, lending a breathiness and power to the voice that really comes out with single runs on the treble strings and blooming out with big held chords. It used to be, in the land of guitars the player with the biggest guitar got the most attention, but we think the tide’s starting to turn back in favor of the small-bodied guitars like this Mahogany-and-Spruce P35 from David Flammang. Whereas a big box requires lots of energy to play, wearing you out more quickly, and often with a tone that’s only moderately well-balanced, these smaller guitars are practically weightless, require little energy to sing loud and proud, and can offer the player a surgically-precise voice that complements their every strum.
Tuned down to DADF#AD or even Cadd9, and this Flammang Parlor remained crisp and expressive, offering an impressive amount of sustain for such a small package. The unwound strings have heaps of delightful overtones that require very little to set them off, and with all that sustain you can bet those sweet overtones will linger in the air for a while. Ragtime tunes? This P35 eats them for breakfast. Basically any fingerpicking style you can imagine, and this Flammang will sing like a dove.

Ladies and gentlemen, I give you a powerhouse of Grand Concert from David Flammang! This new GC50-L has got Flammang’s characteristic brightness and attack in spades here, thanks in part to the classic pairing of East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, and in part by Flammang’s Lowden-inspired top bracing. With a shockingly clear upper register (like jumping in an alpine lake) and a warm low-end (like a roaring fire in winter), this guitar is one that folks won’t want to put down. Flammang’s skills are top-notch, and his understated appointments, from the elegantly carved Ebony bridge to the oval soundhole and Abalone rosette, are deceptively subtle camouflage for this livewire of a Grand Concert. Complete with a Guardian hardshell case, this GC50-L will be making beautiful music for the rest of its long life.

Here’s one for the player who loves the feel of a short scale 12 fretter with a wide fingerboard. This FLammang Guitar feels like butter with it’s short 24.75 string length. The 12 neck joint not only makes for a comfortable reach for the left-hand but also puts the bridge directly in the sweet spot of the top for maximum tone. And tone this one has, Brazilian Rosewood topped with Adirondack spruce for classic voicing. It’s adorned in the 42 style abalone and fingerboard pattern, capped with a beautiful torch inlay on the headstock. This is by far the best sounding and playing Flammang guitar we have ever seen. A treasure.
