When famed guitarbuilder Paul Reed Smith builds a guitar for himself, you’d better believe we’re listening. Enter this 2013 Paul’s Guitar: McCarty-thickness body with narrow 408 pickups, “brushstroke” bird inlays, and a newly designed stop tail bridge. Smith needed a guitar with a tighter sound to cut through a band mix without taking up too much space, hence the narrow 408 pickups, and adds brass inserts to the tailpiece to accentuate the treble response as well. Pickup selection is a three-way switch plus individual coil-split mini toggles, one for each pickup. The result is a wide range of tones right at hand all the time. This beauty further comes customized with an Artist Grade Quilted Maple top and a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard plus Fire Red Burst package.

Over 20 years of collaboration, and this work of art falls into our laps. The David Grissom Trem model (DGT) from PRS is Grissom’s go-to PRS, and this comes as no surprise: this beauty is capable of just about every tone under the sun, and practically plays itself. Grissom and Smith have modified the McCarty Trem model with custom DGT humbuckers (coil tap with the tone knob), the Grissom neck profile that’s a touch narrower at the top frets to aid in thumbovers, and of course the dynamite PRS trem system. Additionally, the 2013 model we have in the shop has been upgraded with a Brazilian Rosewood fretboard and Faded Gray Black finish with a Quilted Maple Artist top special ordered from the PRS Wood Library. Individual volume knobs for the bridge and neck pickups allows the player to blend to their heart’s content, and the push-pull tone knob gives you access to single coil scream right at your fingertips.

Now this is one that got ahead of the pack. We’ve landed a 2011 PRS Artist V Limited in Purple Hazel that’s got some sweet mojo under the hood. We believe oonlhy a handful of Purple Hazels were built in this series, mainly with trems, but this is one of the exclusive few with a stoptail setup. Moreover this features the redesigned five-way switch adding single coil tones in positions two and four, the reliably playable Pattern Regular neck profile, V12 finish, and Phase III locking tuners. The Artist V humbuckers (with the added single coil switch positions) are incredibly versatile, and we love just how butter-smooth the playability is on this one. Paua Abalone birds with MOP outlines are inlaid along the fretboard and terminate in the classic PRS signature at the headstock in a professional and elegant touch. From tuner to (stop) tail, this 2011 Artist V Limited is gorgeous, effortless, and sweetly dynamic. We can’t think of anything else we’d want.

The fourth entry in the Modern Eagle PRS lineup, the ME Quatro is a well-greased machine with all of the trademarks which have made PRS a household name—and a number of new ones as well. This is a pristine sample from 2012 rocking a Pattern neck, 53/10 humbuckers, Rosewood neck, and the innovative V12 finish. Here you’ll find an artist-grade Flame Maple top with McCarty Sunburst, hybrid hardware, Phase III locking tuners, and a setup that’s easy as breathing. Volume and tone knobs plus three way switch, and the tone knob has a push-pull to split the coils for double the tones. These 53/10 pickups are the warmest of the collection, with coil wire made from the same machine that powered so many of the ‘50s most celebrated pickups. Man, the Rosewood neck on this ME Quatro is a thing to behold, smooth as silk and dark as sin, with that old-jean-familiar kind of feel. This work of art from PRS is a lifelong companion waiting to get to work.

New Zealand’s Laurie Williams utilizes gorgeous and unique tonewoods from his native land to build exquisite modern instruments like this Classical from 2011. The top is Sinker Paraoanui, specifically from a log uncovered by a flood near Laurie’s shop which he believes is nearly 100 years old; the body is a set of Ancient Kauri harvested from peat swamps in New Zealand’s North Island estimated to be between 3,000 and 45,000 years old! The neck is salvaged Totara, another NZ domestic.
This Classical comes with a bevy of modern innovations for playability: Ryan-style arm bevel plus venetian cutaway, EVO frets, and a gently radiused fretboard to boot.

Prewar sweetie on the scene! 1943, folks, a 1943 Martin 000-28 available at your local Dream. This grade of old school Brazilian Rosewood is the real deal, as is the Adirondack Spruce top. The voice is precise and wide open at the same time, equally at home with flatpicking and fingers. The neck has some gorgeous finish checks that feel intimate and familiar in hand. Setup is dialed right in to boot. This is one we keep finding ourselves losing track of time with. It’s been cared for over the years, and all relevant repairs have been performed to keep it in peak playing condition.

Snatch this beauty up before we bite the bullet ourselves. A primo 2015 OM-28 from the fine folks at Preston Thompson Guitars with Shipwreck Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce—yes, please! We love the feel of the V neck and the easy playability; 1 3/4” at the nut but 2 5/16” at the saddle for a bit more room for the right hand. It performs handsomely for fingerpicking, and has enough power under the hood with Adirondack Spruce on top to handle flatpicking as well. This one’s had an L.R. Baggs Anthem pickup system installed as well, so it’s ready for the stage! Outfitted with an anchor inlaid at the headstock in Shell.

The Poling Drifter brings petite dimensions together with primo tonewoods for a powerhouse player that’s easy on the hands and the eyes. This beauty comes to us from 2008 with The Tree Mahogany back and sides, Lucky Strike Redwood top, and Brazilian Rosewood appointments throughout. 12 frets to the body and 24.9” scale for warm, fat trebles; Waverly tuners; Ameritage case. Weighing in at a slim 3lbs 7oz, this Poling Drifter is an effortless playing experience, especially for those of us (read: all of us) with shoulder issues.

This guitar took center stage the second we opened the MainStage case. I mean, c’mon, with a Michael Greenfield G2 from 2020 we expected no less! Michael’s handwork is flawless, and his instruments showcase it to perfection. The curves of this G2 are inviting, with a Florentine Cutaway and Laskin-style arm bevel on top, and the body woods both come from Greenfield’s private reserve tonewood treasure trove. This Brazilian Rosewood is chocolate-dark and deceptively straight-grained. We’d have thought we were looking at an instrument from the 20s were it not for the pinless bridge, EVO frets, carved heel swoosh on the Honduran Mahogany neck—well, maybe we wouldn’t mistake it for a prewar Martin after all. On top Michael voiced a reserve set of Alpine Moonspruce for maximum balance, elegance, and power. This G2 excels as a fingerstyle guitar. It also excels with a pick. The tone ties bass, mids, and trebles together in a balanced chord that’s characterized by clear note definition and sustain.
A piece of functional art, built for longevity. This is a lifetime, heirloom Greenfield G2.

Our own Max Spohn’s latest build comes to us as a bespoke piece for one of our clients! We settled on pairing Cocobolo with Swiss Moonspruce and a 25 inch scale on Max’s OM body for a balance between intimacy and power—both of which this beauty has in spades. We love the smoothly executed and colorful geometric inlays at the soundhole and headstock, which set this Spohn apart from the crowd in a polished, professional way that catches the eye. German Scheller tuners offer silky operation, and the setup is velvet, too. This instrument is just easy, from tuner to tail.
We deeply enjoy working with our clients and our builders to bring about custom builds. It’s one of our favorite aspects of this whole enterprise. Interested in one for yourself? Give us a shout!

Now here’s a sweet piece of lutherie from 2001Steve Kauffman’s (of Klein Guitars fame) Parlor model in Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. What a gem, a beautiful small-bodied guitar, we’re conflicted about even offering it for sale. Steve’s fit and finish its flawless, and while this guitar has definite nods to Klein acoustics, he’s got his own style on showcase here. Slotted headstock with 12-fret neck (a Brazilian Rosewood neck, no less!) and long scale setup makes for the perfect combination of sweetness and power. We’re particularly impressed by the clarity and definition of the bass register, given the slim Parlor dimensions. This beauty has been well cared for and is in peak playing condition today, two decades later.

We love the amazing array of reissues that Gibson has offered over the years, and we especially love those that come out of their Nashville Custom Shop. Enter this well-oiled machine, a Nashville ’63 ES-335 Block Reissue from 2013 with hardly a mark on it. Laminated Maple body with solid Maple center block and one-piece Mahogany neck; custom with a variation of the Burstbucker similar to the Live Bucker of the LPRO and LPR9 , but with lower output at the neck and more in the bridge with differential winding; aluminum stopbar tailpiece; Pearloid block inlays. The neck is the slim-n-slick profile of the early ‘60s that feels effortless in hand, and the setup on this one fits the sweet spot for both light and more aggressive attacks. The 335 semi-hollow design is a classic that is equally at home in so many different styles, it’s no wonder these guitars continue to be so popular. Additionally, this beauty comes out of the Nashville shop, where Gibson’s tight build quality is held to even higher standards—the Nashvilles are consistently top notch, and this 2013 ES-335 Reissue is no exception.

Now here’s a gorgeous powerhouse that plays like grass-fed butter: a Paul Waller Masterbuilt 50s Telecaster with NOS treatment. Waller, a veteran master builder at Fender’s Custom Shop since 2003, pulled this one off in 2012, and it’s been well-cared for ever since. ’57 soft V Maple neck done in high gloss to match the Ash body in two-color burst, plus a sweet Reverse Bridge pickup, Twisted Tele Neck pickup combo. Four-way switch plus volume and tone, and a ’52 Tele custom pickguard in white. This beauty weighs in a little over seven pounds, which feels natural and easy in hand and on the leg. We have both the G&G rectangular case and a fitted tweed case.

The Closet Classic series recreates those fabled vintage axes found under the bed or at the back of the closet—looking like stepping back in time. This beauty came out of the Fender Custom Shop in 2012 with Swamp Ash body plus Maple neck in a 60s-style C profile, 25.5” scale, and upgraded with Abby Red Hot pickups handwound by Abigail Ybarra. The tone is classic Strat, with some added heat for crispier attack and power. The two-tone sunburst has been finish checked in the Closet Classic style and wrapped ups with a three-ply w/b/w pickguard. And this gorgeous Strat comes delivered in a G&G case with COA!

In 2014 Gibson collaborates with founding member of the Black Crowes, Rich Robinson, on an exclusive run of 500 ES-335s, a nail-for-nail recreation of Robinson’s ’63 ES-335 which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (and later painstakingly restored). This beauty is wrapped up with period correct faded Cherry finish from Gibson’s VOS process, Burstbucker pickups (#1 at the neck and a hotter #2 at the bridge), and a nod to the original’s “Custom Made” plate covering stopbar stud holes. Small block inlays on a Rosewood fingerboard, plus a beefy Bigsby vibrato, round out the looks. These Burstbuckers are sweet and juicy, and are infinitely adaptable to a wide range of genres; the Maple semi-hollow body also adds sustain, color, and feedback resistance. This Rich Robinson Signature has all the mojo we’d expect from a true ’63—plus the playability of a like new, well-oiled machine.

Our 2005 Collings D3HBaaA is a smooth operator, and comes sporting premium Brazilian Rosewood (no longer an option on Collings) and Adirondack Spruce up top. Herringbone trim pairs up with Ivoroid bindings, gold Waverly tuners, and a modified V Honduran Mahogany neck that feels smooth and intimate in hand. The backstrip is a gorgeous multicolored chevron pattern, and sets off the dramatic Brazilian Rosewood wavey figure. All wrapped up under a gorgeous, thin, and smooth Nitrocellulose Lacquer finish. The voice has a warmth in the midrange that fills it all out. This is a D3HBaaA that can be dug in to, or played lightly; it’s exceptionally responsive as a flattop, let alone a Dreadnought.

Somehow John Buscarino manages to coax a huge amount of power and presence out of his tops while also maintaining clarity and articulation—this gorgeous 17 Inch Archtop from 1994 exemplifies that with a silky setup to boot. AAA Quilted Maple back and sides paired with Spruce on top, a Benedetto humbucker with volume knob on the guard, and 25” scale for sweet, sweet trebles. This beauty has opened up handsomely in the almost three decades it’s been making music, and it’s set up for another three!

We’ve got a crisp and lively Bluegrass cannon here for you fine flatpicking folks. Martin’s D-18 Authentic 1939 (from 2014) is a powerhouse built to emulate the prewar D-18 we all covet, and here features hot hide glue construction throughout, Adirondack Spruce top over Mahogany body, the “Authentic” barrel-and-heel neck profile, and this is one of the last 1939 Authentics Martin released without their VTS treatment, setting it apart from later Authentics. The voice is wide awake and powerful, with a dry, woody response and quick decay. Well-cared for, this 2014 Authentic is in great playing shape with only a few marks, and is more than ready to get down to the business of making music.

This is a sweetheart Custom Shop equally at home with fingers as with picks. What a smooth operator! Martin’s Custom Shop team pulled off a gorgeous bespoke piece with this 2015 OM-28 shade top. Chocolate-brown Madagascar Rosewood pairs up with Italian Spruce on top (one of our Custom Shop favorite Spruces) and a tasty brown burst to boot. 28-style appointments plus herringbone trim on the top and a checkered backstrip behind, Grover tuners, and Ivoroid bindings. The voice is what we’d describe as extra smooth: the bass register is warm and present, filling out chords, while the trebles add a nice glassy flavor on top that blends handsomely with the mids. Great string energy on this one, and it plays oh so easily as well. Had your eye out for a Custom Shop that’ll do it all? Look no further, your search is at an end.

Figured Maple top with Washed Cherry finish over Mahogany body and neck, plus a TonePros bridge and tailpiece with deep studs, ’57-recreated humbuckers, and the ’59 neck profile that’s smooth, round, and fantastically effortless in hand. These special Burstbuckers can really rip when you lean in, but can also offer a buttery, round flavor depending on attack. The two volume, two tone knob arrangement plus three-way switch will feel immediately familiar, as will the solid build weight (under 8lbs; slim for an LP). Those four knobs are all push-pulls, too (bass tone: Phase Reversal, neck tone: kill switch, bass volume: split bridge, neck volume: split neck).
