2018 Greenfield G2, African Blackwood/Alpine Moonspruce
Michael, Michael, Michael, you’ve done it again. This 2018 Greenfield G2 is proof of the golden era of modern lutherie: flawlessly built, resonant to a T, effortlessly playable. This is a well-oiled machine for fingerstyle, strumming, whatsoever your guitar heart desires. African Blackwood back and sides pair up with an Alpine Moonspruce top, arm bevel, and florentine cutaway. EVO frets for longevity, 25 3/4” scale for a crisp, defined bass response that carries right on down to C# without batting an eye. It’s just incredible. The voice is characterized by the massive, juicy, enveloping flavors that we’ve come to expect from Michael Greenfield: individual notes are very, very strong—chords ring out like entire instruments unto themselves. We cannot recommend this G2 more highly.

Contemporary fingerstyle meets its perfect companion: our 2016 Greenfield G4.2. Michael Greenfield’s guitars are in the hands of some of our favorite bleeding edge fingerstylists, like Pipo Romero and Andy McKee, and here’s why. Michael’s guitars are exquisitely responsive to a wide range of attacks, they have a cleanness and clarity that allows complex voicings to ring out with the right amount of definition, and they play effortlessly. Figured Mahogany back and sides here paired with Adirondack Spruce.
This particular G4.2 is fully loaded with creature comforts for playability and intonation. The multiscale fretboard is modeled after Andy McKee’s personal G4.2 (26” bass to 25.4” treble), there are twin arm and rib bevels, and Michael’s heel “swoosh” combined with a Florentine cutaway for easy access to the upper dusty frets. This guitar growls, it purrs, it exclaims, it converses. We keep playing different styles on it, and each comes out beautifully.
A instrument like this 2016 Greenfield G4.2 only comes along once in a great while; get this one you still can.Other keywords: greenfield guitars, fingerpicking, dadgad, open tuning, fan fret, fanned fret, altered tuning, evo frets, adriondack, mainstage case

Juicy, fat, a full-bodied beauty: our like-new 2018 Greenfield G2 is a force of nature. Malaysian Blackwood back and sides, Alpine Moonspruce top, twin arm & rib bevels plus a Florentine cutaway—and that’s just for starters. Michael also installed his DADGAD multiscale board (26.125” to 25.4”), Baljak tuners, his “swoosh” heel, and Spalted rosette to tie it all together. And this beautiful package comes wrapped up in a Mainstage flight case to boot.
There’s some serious meat on these bones: the bass response is rich and enveloping, and those treble strings almost have a life of their own. The note-for-note balance is superb; somehow Michael manages to make individual notes juicy and larger-than-life, but clearly defined relative to adjacent ones. Loud and clear, indeed.

Fingerstyle comes in many packages from big to small, but there’s a niche in the in between that really sings. Michael Greenfield’s G3 model is right there in the middle with a 13-fret neck and a 14 5/8” lower bout: slim for comfort, but built for big tone. To that end, Michael added a Laskin-style arm bevel to this 2008 G3, and put a 25” scale length together with a 1 7/8” nut for a wide, easy-playing fretboard perfect for fingerpicking goodness. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Lutz Spruce on top, and Michael’s preferred Honduran Mahogany neck for stability and sustain. This G3 feels solid in your hands.
It’s very energetic and lively, even under a light attack. The trebles cut particularly well through the mix, without overpowering. The roomy string spacing makes quick work of complex chords to prevent your fingers from stumbling onto each other. This Greenfield responds well for a variety of styles, and it loves to ring out with sustained notes; they keep hanging for quite a while.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, carbon graphite, tone halo, calton case, gotoh 510, hide glue, papa heart abalone, spalted maple

Smooth, smooth sailing. Michael Greenfield’s guitars are always a dream come true, and we love this 2010 G2 in African Blackwood and German Spruce. Liquid trebles, well-balanced bass register, pianistic response all along the fretboard—an excellent companion for fingerstyle or picks, and altered tunings feel right at home thanks to the 25 3/4” scale length. Michael added an arm bevel for creature comfort, and a heel “swoosh” carve to help the left hand get around the neck to those pesky upper frets, and rang in the soundhole with a Paua Abalone and Spalted Maple rosette that sets off the German Spruce top with style.
This beauty is as easy on the eyes as it is the hands: the setup is all glass, and the high gloss finish shines just the same. This Greenfield G2 is the complete package.Other keywords: lutherie, luthier, florentine cutaway, karura, gotoh, c neck, pinless bridge, fingerpicking

The cherry on top really makes the dessert. This Black Cherry archtop from famed Montreal luthier Michael Greenfield was originally commissioned by Jacques-André Dupont for his Red Guitar Collection in 2009. As such, Michael gave this 17 inch archtop, built with a Super 400 in mind, a sienna red sunburst over the Bigleaf Maple back and sides and European Spruce top. Michael enlisted the enviable skills of inlay maestro Larry Robinson for the pinup girl and cherry inlays along the fretboard and headstock (inspired by a pinup girl-clad gum display rack Michael spied at a local restaurant). A Kent Armstrong Alnico 3 pickup is mounted to the Ebony pickguard, custom built for this guitar to match the fretboard radius and tighter string spacing.
Of tone, this Greenfield’s flavor avoids the saccharine maraschino cherry altogether, instead favoring the dark, complex palette of the morello cherry. Michael’s F holes have a wider aperture than the traditional L-5, so there’s a snappier and crisper response than the Gibson grandaddies. A slim 1 23/32” nut harkens back to the feel of a Super 400 and keeps the strings within easy reach of the player’s left hand for complex jazz chords and solo runs.
It’s safe to say, there’s not another Greenfield, let alone archtop, quite like the Black Cherry. Snag this delicious fruit while you can.Other keywords: lutherie, l5, big leaf maple, western bigleaf maple. naple, jazz box, gotoh

We don’t know many luthiers who work harder to hone their craft than Michael Greenfield of Montreal, Quebec. We also don’t know many luthiers who are able to build nylon string guitars at the same level as their steels—again, Michael stands apart. Here we’ve got an agile and responsive 2010 Classical C2 with Flamed Maple back and sides, and a cream-white Alpine Spruce top. The elevated fingerboard and Florentine Cutaway come together for easy access all the way to those dusty upper frets (and Michael’s “swoosh” heelcap helps your left hand snug up a little closer for better access, too), and Michael’s trademark arm bevel keeps player comfort at a maximum.
The back is slightly arched, giving the body a little more air to breathe, and that really comes out in the crisp trebles. The Padauk 12-hole bridge in the Gilbert style combines a more efficient tie block with an attractive aesthetic. Gilbert tuners, 1 7/8” nut, 651mm scale, and 2 1/4” saddle spacing. This beauty is in superb condition, hardly a scratch to be found. The neck is slightly slimmer than your standard classical, making this guitar an easy player. To make the deal even more enticing, this Greenfield C2 has a K&K undersaddle FanTaStick installed as well for when it’s time to take to the stage. And all of this comes wrapped up in an Accord case that’s super light, and just as strong.

From the man himself: “My name is Michael Greenfield and I am passionate about tone. Great tone. FAT tone. I believe in squeezing every last molecule of tone out of my guitars.” Michael, we believe it. This practically new 2017 C1 Classical is a heady brew of energetic trebles and chocolaty rich bass notes—and this Greenfield still has more waking up to do. Indian Rosewood and Alpine Moonspruce never looked so good. Not only has Michael managed to build a guitar that’s complex and dynamic right off the bench, he’s done so with a number of creature comforts to keep the modern player happy.
Ebony armrest, elevated fingerboard, 12-pin bridge, and the pièce de résistance: a fully adjustable neck that can be tweaked on the fly, at full tension. All it takes is one twist of a hex wrench at the center of the fretboard extension and the action will glide up or down as needed. The neck carve retains the traditional Classical D shape, but Michael’s added some contemporary curves to the cheeks that are easy on the hands, and very familiar to a steel string player. Simply put, this Greenfield C1 means business. By the sounds of it, business is good.
