Bob Taylor started his career as a solo guitar builder much like the many great builders of today. Anyone who’s played one of those early Taylors knows how different they are from the Taylor Factory guitars, more open, alive and complex in tone. R. Taylor Guitars was setup to offer a smaller shop approach to building, offering custom guitars such as this beautiful Sinker Redwood and Cocobolo Rosewood Style 1.
The subtle sunburst over the natural colors in the Sinker Redwood makes this R. Taylor guitar stand out. Sinker Redwood comes from a famous log found near Mendicino California that spent it’s lifetime submerged. This Redwood is stiffer than most and here with it’s modified Adirondack bracing it produces a wonderful rich tone, that is also powerful. Paired here with dramatic Cocobolo Rosewood for a unique elegance and tone.

We feel pretty confident saying that Ron Phillips has mastered his craft. These boutique-built resonators are well polished diamonds, every one, and this 2006 Tricone with a cutaway shines so bright. German Silver construction throughout with Flame Koa bindings over a Flame Maple neck; Waverly tuners; art deco-inspired aesthetics throughout the build. 12 frets to the body with a tricone resonator setup makes for a sweet, warm, intimate voice that’s a far cry from the shrill, smack-in-the-face tone of other metalbody resos. This beauty has gears. This is the first R.E. Phillips we’ve had in the shop featuring a cutaway—and we’re glad to have it! Not only does the Florentine point look great, it really affords the player uncompromised access for work at the top of the fretboard. This one is currently set up for slide work.

German Silver construction throughout, 12 frets to the body, and Ron’s art deco aesthetic all come together in a parlor-sized package that’s as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears. Resonators just don’t come as slick as this. Ron Phillips’ hands have crafted numerous powerhouse resonator guitars, but this large-bodied Parlor has got to be one of the cleanest, most angelic voices we’ve had the pleasure of hearing in the shop. Slide players, in particular, will love the setup, and that extra peppering of smooth, silky tone that only the German Silver body Phillips’ hand-spun aluminum resonator cone can provide. The predominant aesthetic in Ron’s work is influenced by the Art Deco movement–which this Resonator Guitar exhibits in the elongated and asymmetrical F-holes and the dashed arrows encircling the bridge. With a voice so moving and sustained, it’s no wonder Phillips’ large-bodied Parlor model is so successful: thanks to that custom resonator cone, the guitar has crystalline clarity and a clean energy to the setup.

Nothing sends shivers up your spine like a slide guitar in an open minor tuning. Similarly, nothing quite captures the kind of contentment that comes from playing old Blues numbers on your porch after a long day’s work like a metal resonator guitar in your lap. In this 2012 small-bodied Parlor from R.E. Phillips, you get both.Phillips has done a number on us this time: with a small but deep-bodied Parlor built from German Silver and his own resonator cone, Phillips has created a metal-bodied resonator guitar that is just as rich, dynamic, and elegant as its wooden-bodied brethren. For starters, German Silver has a clean, expressive tone, not warm like brass, not bright like steel. If German Silver were a wood, it would be a Rosewood for how much richer its voice is than other metals. The smaller body is amazingly easy to play, and the setup is excellent for slide or regular fingering. We tried out a number of different tunings on this Parlor, but we kept coming back to DADFAD and Open G–something about the elegant coolness of the German Silver turns the spooky factor up to eleven on minor tunings.Phillips’ Art Deco sympathies are evident in the design aesthetic of the F Holes and the diamond-over-mesh motif, which further help set it apart from other resonator guitars, while not being outlandish or inaccessibly appointed. It’s a classier resonator than you’re used to, but it can growl and scream with the best of them.

Ron Phillips is one of the few custom builders making resonators completely by hand right down to spinning his own cones. This cutaway Parlor design was made popular by Del Rey, one of many fine guitarists who play Phillips resonators. Others include Orville Johnson and the late great, John Jackson. The key element of Phillips resonators is the round attack that is reminiscent of the 1920 Nationals. This guitar has a fat and mellow tone with power to spare. Ron Phillips started years ago making by hand his exquisite metal body resonator guitars. He uses German Silver and spins his own cones which enables him to get his distinctive sound that is at once powerful and mellow. It is reminiscent of a 1920s National that has matured fully. The attack is not as harsh as some resos and overtones are very musical. His OM body is 14 3/4″ at the lower bout and has a rich, full sound that is equally at home accompanying voice or playing slide or fingerstyle. The woven grills and diamond cone cover grills are not only beautiful but really allow the sound to come forth proudly and his laminated neck is ultra stable. If you’ve been searching for a higher quality resonator guitar, you’ll love Ron Phillips’ guitars.

When you lay hands on an instrument made by Rafael Moreno Rodriguez, you realize that not all guitars are created equal, and the guitar in your hands stands head and shoulders above the rest. Having learned the art of lutherie from masters Manuel Lopez Bellido, Antonio Marin, and Eduardo Ferrer, Moreno combines the tried-and-true techniques of his forebears with a contemporary voicing, yielding exceptionally robust instruments. This is the kind of builder who refuses to outsource, preferring to maintain his shop by himself, working almost exclusively with hand tools.
Moreno only builds one grade of guitar: he can’t fathom building with less than his best effort. Crafted with the utmost attention to detail, where patience and quiet confidence reign, this Flamenco Moreno combines the energy and zeal of a Flamenco with the richness and sonority of a Classical. For the guitarist who craves an instrument designed to maximize their dynamic range, this is the holy grail. The trebles are shimmering, and the low end has delicious amounts of snap—perfect for your favorite emotive Flamenco pieces.
