This guitar feels like royalty, the perfect blend of power and elegance. Michael Thames is one of our favorite nylon string builders, and we especially love his Double Top models like #979 from 2019. Indian Rosewood body with a Cedar/Balsa double top makes for a voice that pairs a smooth, enveloping bass register with cool and precise trebles. We love the note definition, and separation between the registers. This Thames DT has a very vocal quality that imparts a lot of body and color, which we continually found ourselves losing track of time with. Thames’ fit and finish is flawless here, especially with a translucent French Polish finish that lets the Rosewood and Cedar shine. The headstock is carved with an Ebony veneer and Rosewood underneath which sets off the Gotoh tuners handsomely. The build weight comes in at an incredibly light 3lbs 7oz; this Thames DT is a featherweight in hand, but with a vigorous and expressive voice under the strings.

The combination of Italian Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is to fingerstyle guitars what lettuce and tomatoes are to sandwiches: the perfect complement. This 2010 Classical from Santa Fe, New Mexico-based luthier Michael Thames is just the sort of perfection you need, if you’re interested in a guitar with clear, present bass notes and pronounced, articulate trebles.
The setup is silky and fast with a 650mm scale and 53mm nut, and the overall feathery weight makes for extra comfort and playability. We found there to be plenty of bark for vigorous passages, but this Thames also responded well to a lighter touch for more delicate pieces, where the meaty midrange can really shine. In splendid condition, this Thames still has a long life of music ahead of it.

The guitar was crafted by a long time Gruhn Guitar employee, Dixie Michell of The Guitar Company of America. It is a very unique instrument both in it’s size/shape and it’s construction. It is sneaky big, with near dreadnought proportions but it’s shape is like a 000. Inside you’ll find a ‘Prairie State’ inspired metal support rod that extends from the neck heel to the tail block like the old Larson Brothers guitars employed. This design truly ‘supports’ the guitar and allows the top to be thin and powerful. This guitar is a boomer! Big, dread-style power, but designed more for fingerstyle thanks to the wider fingerboard and 12 fret neck. The craftsmenship is superb and we love the playful inlays of various creatures on the fingerboard and the gorgeous vine on the slotted headstock.
