Friends, you won’t want to put this one down for a heartbeat. It’s dried out and woken up so much since 1936, this Gibson L-00 weighs next to nothing but packs a powerful, expressive, and frankly loud! voice that works great for fingerpicking, and honestly a fair bit of flatpick work too. Quick and energetic, it’s practically humming. Mahogany back and sides plus Adirondack Spruce top and tiger stripe pickguard, original finish, a recent refret for excellent playability, and replaced Kluson-style tuners for modern tuneability (originals included with case).

Extensive MOP inlays along the fretboard, bridge, and culminating with a fleur-de-lis at the headstock between gold Kluson Sealfast tuners. Take a load off and pick up this powerhouse Gibson AJ if you’re looking for a helluva time. You’ll need to hold on and keep up, because it’s got heaps of energy and it’s raring to go. This unique Custom Shop comes from 2001 and is so wide awake, it’s scary. Equally at home with fingers as with picks, and it plays great with both a light touch and a more aggressive attack. Kevin Kopp (of Kopp Guitars fame) was working in Gibson’s Custom Shop team when this order came down the line, so no surprise that this one’s got some extra heat in the sauce, so to speak. This beauty is dressed to the nines with Pearl trim, as well as engraved MOP position markers such as you’d otherwise only see on a Gibson banjo fretboard, and they went with a 30s-style sunburst in ultra thin Nitrocellulose Lacquer. As a result of said thinness, there are several finish checks, which we find only adds to the vintage vibes. Old growth Brazilian Rosewood back and sides—gorgeous stuff—plus Adirondack Spruce on top makes for an absolute beast of a guitar. Do yourself a favor, snag this one before it croons itself right out the door.

A gorgeous, mostly original Gibson F4 from 1920. Figured Maple body with Spruce on top and a Varnish finish throughout, Ivoroid bindings and half rope rosette trim, original inlaid tuners and pickguard—it’s a sweetheart. Gibson wasn’t using adjustable bridges until the 1920s, so we believe this bridge was added afterwards, although the footprint of the bridge matches the impressions in the top finish. If it is replaced, it appears to have been done very early in its life. Our repair staff recently went over it from tuner to tail and have given it a clean bill of health (and refretting it for a killer setup).

2011 saw Gibson offer an exclusive run of Historic 1959 Reissue Les Pauls boasting hand selected materials and hardware by the Custom Shop. These LPs are powerhouses. Figured Maple top with Washed Cherry finish over Mahogany body and neck, plus a TonePros bridge and tailpiece with deep studs, ’57-recreated humbuckers, and the ’59 neck profile that’s smooth, round, and fantastically effortless in hand. These special Burstbuckers can really rip when you lean in, but can also offer a buttery, round flavor depending on attack. The two volume, two tone knob arrangement plus three-way switch will feel immediately familiar, as will the solid build weight (under 8lbs; slim for an LP). Those four knobs are all push-pulls, too (bass tone: Phase Reversal, neck tone: kill switch, bass volume: split bridge, neck volume: split neck). This beauty comes wrapped in the original Gibson case, and comes with an uninstalled pickguard and COA.

We love the amazing array of reissues that Gibson has offered over the years, and we especially love those that come out of their Nashville Custom Shop. Enter this well-oiled machine, a Nashville ’63 ES-335 Block Reissue from 2013 with hardly a mark on it. Laminated Maple body with solid Maple center block and one-piece Mahogany neck; custom with a variation of the Burstbucker similar to the Live Bucker of the LPRO and LPR9 , but with lower output at the neck and more in the bridge with differential winding; aluminum stopbar tailpiece; Pearloid block inlays. The neck is the slim-n-slick profile of the early ‘60s that feels effortless in hand, and the setup on this one fits the sweet spot for both light and more aggressive attacks. The 335 semi-hollow design is a classic that is equally at home in so many different styles, it’s no wonder these guitars continue to be so popular. Additionally, this beauty comes out of the Nashville shop, where Gibson’s tight build quality is held to even higher standards—the Nashvilles are consistently top notch, and this 2013 ES-335 Reissue is no exception.

In 2014 Gibson collaborates with founding member of the Black Crowes, Rich Robinson, on an exclusive run of 500 ES-335s, a nail-for-nail recreation of Robinson’s ’63 ES-335 which was destroyed by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 (and later painstakingly restored). This beauty is wrapped up with period correct faded Cherry finish from Gibson’s VOS process, Burstbucker pickups (#1 at the neck and a hotter #2 at the bridge), and a nod to the original’s “Custom Made” plate covering stopbar stud holes. Small block inlays on a Rosewood fingerboard, plus a beefy Bigsby vibrato, round out the looks. These Burstbuckers are sweet and juicy, and are infinitely adaptable to a wide range of genres; the Maple semi-hollow body also adds sustain, color, and feedback resistance. This Rich Robinson Signature has all the mojo we’d expect from a true ’63—plus the playability of a like new, well-oiled machine.
