2008 Traugott BK Cutaway, Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce
From 2008, we have a Jeff Traugott BK in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce—the ultimate Traugott combination. This instrument was previously owned by none other than Doug Young, the highly accomplished and acclaimed fingerstyle guitarist. As discerning as Doug is, you know he only plays the best, and this guitar is no exception.
At 14 years old at the time of this publication, it has been beautifully played-in, and you can feel the maturity in its voice. This is a classic Traugott, showcasing all the signature aesthetics and tonal qualities the builder is celebrated for: clarity, power, and that unmistakable Traugott sound. Plus, the Brazilian Rosewood on the back and sides is nothing short of stunning.

The sweets of time, good wood, and a master’s touch. This Traugott BK comes to us from 1998 and has opened up handsomely, the result of which is a set of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce that are responsive to a T and built with a wide dynamic range for a variety of attacks and styles. Jeff’s BK body is a generous 16 inches across the lower bout, adding power and bass response to his trademark well-balanced sound. The Brazilian Rosewood is really something else: rich red hues throughout, very straight-grained and quarter sawn–and such a tightly grained German Spruce top! Jeff’s wood game has always been a cut above the rest, and this 1998 BK is proof of that.

This guitar is magic, simply put. This 2021 Traugott Model R has everything one would expect from the workshop of Jeff Traugott, with one curveball. The back and sides are African Blackwood, which is in and of itself a rare enough tonewood, but this is the first time we have seen it on one of Jeff’s guitars. Which makes for one interesting instrument. Not only do you have the power and clarity the Model R is known for, but now there is an extra dimension of low mids that are unique to African Blackwood. The characteristics of the German Spruce are not lost in the mix ever. It is quite like a piano in its sonority, and quality. While we are in the business of providing dream guitars to the world. This is unmistakably a “guitar of your dreams.”

Ready for a Traugott that packs a punch? This 2014 Model R Long Neck is just what the doctor ordered. Spec’d out with a long 27 inch scale (but voiced for light gauge strings, aka not a baritone) in Jeff’s classic Brazilian Rosewood/German Spruce combination makes for a snappy response and sweet note definition across the range. And don’t be scared off by the long scale–this Model R plays very well indeed, set up for fingerstyle ease all along the fretboard.

One of those rare instruments that does it all so well, this 2000 Model R from Jeff Traugott excels on all metrics. Smooth playability and neck profile, premium tonewoods, wide awake voice with a dancer’s balance and a mathematician’s precision–the question is, how do you get anything else done with this beauty in your life? Those aforementioned tonewoods are Jeff’s classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce, but here we have the added distinction of a set of his coveted Kentucky Stash Brazilian Rosewood. It’s brick red, straight grained, and offers glassy clarity and depth in a lightweight playing package.
Seriously, we tried to make bad music with this Model R. Couldn’t do it. Even the wrong notes sang out right.

A rare and special treat, even among such unique pieces we’ve come to expect from Jeff Traugott: our 1996 Traugott RT 12-fret in Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce. Originally built for Martin Simpson, this RT combines a long 25 1/2” scale with a 12-fret neck for clarity and projection, and has sides which are slightly narrower than a regular R to sweeten up the bass response, to say nothing of keeping the guitar lightweight and easy to play. There’s a certain kind of intimacy to the tone that we haven’t found in many of Jeff’s 14-fret models, one that lends itself handsomely to open tunings and a wide range of fingerstyle approaches. In 2002, Jeff installed a new neck with double graphite rods. Wrapped up in a Calton flight case, this gorgeous RT is safe and sound. It’s ready for action at the drop of a hat.

This sweet slice of heaven comes to us from 2020, is further upgraded with Jeff’s ultra exclusive “Kentucky Stash” Brazilian Rosewood (plus German Spruce on top in classic Traugott fashion), and plays like grass-fed butter. The key qualities of the voice is clarity across the strings, and a transparent tone that leaves each register singing out in a way that feels authentic, clean, and true. It’s hard to put into words, but it’s this precise quality that makes Jeff’s guitars stand out from the ranks of our other amazing modern builders.

The fruits are sweet, indeed. The latest Model R from Jeff Traugott to grace our shop comes to us from 2020, and is already wide awake. Jeff’s classic combination of Brazilian Rosewood and German Spruce is used here to great effect: exquisite clarity across the registers, glassy trebles, and a strong fundamental throughout. The voice is dialed in for maximum clarity, making this a great candidate for fingerstyle play. That said, this Model R also holds up well under a flatpick. It’s the sort of guitar that makes every note count. Jeff’s aesthetic lets the quality of the woods speak for themselves—and what a story this dramatically colored Brazilian Rosewood tells—with only Abalone to tastefully ring in the rosette. The fretboard and bridge are also upgraded with Brazilian Rosewood to make the German Spruce top pop. All wrapped up in a custom Hoffee flight case for the best protection money can buy, short of a security detail.

As it is with our own children, so it is with guitars: siblings stick together. When Jeff Traugott was approached with the concept of building two sister R Model guitars–one 6-string, the other 12–he saw an opportunity to create two guitars which would grow and sing in tandem and bring out the best in each other. These two guitars are built from matching sets of Brazilian Rosewood for the backs and sides which came from the same board that was saved from its droll life as a bookshelf and transformed into two astonishingly rich guitars. Similarly, the German Spruce tops are a matched pair, as are the Fossilized Ivory nuts and saddles.
The 6-string twin may have half as many strings, but it has half again as much bass and snap as its 12-string sister. Jeff’s taste for fine-grained Brazilian Rosewood, with its enveloping sonority, and his ability to voice the German Spruce top to accentuate the upper registers, combine in the form of a guitar with flawless separation of notes and a dynamic voice. Naturally a fingerstylist’s dream, this Traugott R exudes both sizzling responsiveness and sweet, subtle overtones.

Jeff’s abilities continue to astound: here he’s made a 12-string R with all the focus and precision of its 6-string sister. This is a 12-string like no other: where most 12’s have a big, brash voice, this 12-string is clear and articulate; where many 12’s fill a room with the sheer force of their projection, Jeff’s 12-string envelopes the air with the bell-like clarity and focus of each string pair. In a word, this 12-string speaks directly to you when another would shout at you. Fingerstylists will adore how well-balanced the guitar is across the registers, and the myriad colors that can be discovered in alternate tunings.

This is one of a pair of R Models from Jeff Traugott’s hands, with love. Adorned with Larry Robinson inlays and sporting primo-grade Brazilian Rosewood and European Spruce, this R Cutaway cut a striking figure with sparkling Abalone trim and Venetian Cutaways. Knife-sharp trebles with a warm and responsive middle register, and that with a focused bass response to keep the voice tight and snappy. Jeff’s guitars are equally at home with picks as with fingertips, and we couldn’t help ourselves when it came time to dip into altered tuning territory—this is an incredible DADGAD guitar. A heart-throbbing Traugott R.

We’ve seen a number of Jeff’s R models come through the shop, and a fair number of his BKs too, but only rarely have we had the chance to see a 00. And that’s a shame, because this number from 2008 is here to tell us that Jeff has perfected the small body guitar just as handily as he has the medium and the large. What an exquisite voice, lovely balance across the registers and equal parts energetic and elegant. Lots of projection under the hood, ready to burst out of the soundhole with even a light attack. It’s really a wonderful example of Jeff’s lutherie chops. The classic Traugott combination of German Spruce over Brazilian Rosewood is here in full force; combined with a 24.9” scale, 1 3.4” nut, and 2 3/8” saddle spacing for a spacious, comfortable righthand experience. Try and find a bad note on this guitar, we dare you.

Crystalline clarity across the fretboard; perfectly balanced from bass to treble. This is a Model R from Jeff Traugott that’s opened up handsomely since 1999, and offers a glassy, engrossing voice for the fingerstylist who makes every note count. Incredible. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides paired with German Spruce on top, with a medium thickness, C profile neck that feels smooth and familiar in hand. We’re excited that this beauty has a Highlander IP-2 pickup system installed—reliability of a UST plus the warmth and breathiness of an internal boom mic. It sounds just as good amplified as acoustic. There’s hardly a mark on it; this has been a well-cared for Traugott. All the better to let the premium BRW back set shine! The grain has a gentle wave to it that’s set off by the brick-red hues and black ink lines throughout.

Like many other guitar enthusiasts I picked up my instrument as a teenager and haven’t been able to put it down since. My interest in woodworking and construction developed independently at about the same age. I decided to try to combine the two when going to school at Evergreen State College. My first foray into instrument making was the construction of a dulcimer that I managed to cobble together with information I got from the Guild of American Luthiers.I returned to Northern California where I grew up; there I found a guitar and violin builder in Santa Cruz and arranged to work in his shop. Under his tutelage and with lots of help from a book called Constructing a Bluegrass Mandolin: A Complete Technical Guide (by Roger Siminoff), I built my second instrument, an F-5 mandolin.Needless to say, I became hooked. I started a small shop in a garage and began building my first guitar. After the garage I graduated to a small store, where a friend and I did repair work and built a couple of guitars a year. After six years I was hired by the Santa Cruz Guitar Company; there I was able to hone my skills in all aspects of guitar production and repair work.I left in 1991 to open my current shop, which is is located in an old industrial complex that now houses a diverse community of artisans and craftspeople. I moved into the empty shell and proceeded to design and build my dream guitar shop. While I was developing my work space the bulk of my production consisted of repairing old Martins and other high-end acoustic guitars. It has been my good fortune to do repairs for some of the premier acoustic guitar shops of Central California, including Gryphon Stringed Instruments and Carmel Music.Currently the majority of my time is spent building guitars, although I still do some repair work and have occasionally taught workshops on neck resetting. I’ve developed a line of guitars that have a clean, classic look and simple elegance. I really like to let the materials speak for themselves. Tone and playability are crucial and because each player has her or his own needs, I listen carefully and try to make each instrument one-of-a-kind.I’ve been motivated from the very beginning to try to be one of the best at my craft. This is the focus of my business. I work by myself and I love what I do. I hope I have the opportunity to work with you!Jeff Traugott
