Here we have a gorgeous Palen Archtop in Sitka Spruce and Flamed Maple. This Palen immediately draws the eye as soon as you walk into the room, the sunburst has been beautifully executed over the whole instrument. The tone of this archtop can easily keep up with its looks. We played it unplugged first and were surprised by the richness of tone we achieved, Then we plugged it in, and that is the game changer. The stereo pickup combines magnetic and piezo for a wonderful acoustic tone and incredible versatility.

This is one of the best sounding and playing twelve string guitars we have ever heard! This is an R.Taylor style 1 made from Red Spruce and “The Tree” Mahogany. Tonally this twelve strings is sweet and powerful, not at all brittle like twelve strings can tend to be. This is a showpiece guitar, the woods are top notch, and the inlay work is exquisite. This is a lifetime guitar!

The R.Taylor division of Taylor guitars really knew how to build a perfect guitar, this style 1 is flawless. Built from a great set of Sinker Redwood and East Indian Rosewood, this guitar has chocolatey tones in appearance and sound. Balance is the major draw of this guitar, the basses and trebles work in harmony, never competing with one another. It is easy to get lost in the music while playing this guitar, playing is effortless. Yet another fine guitar from the R.Taylor shop.

This is an absolutely stunning Taylor Custom Dreadnought in Redwood and East Indian Rosewood. All the hallmarks of an exceptional Taylor are here, perfect execution of build quality, playability, and that Taylor tone. Redwood isn’t a tone wood that gets used a whole lot, and it’s hard to understand why, it imparts a beautiful warmth of tone. The combo of Redwood and Rosewood is a knockout pairing on this guitar, all the crispness of the Rosewood is tempered by the Redwood. The trebles are clear and blend perfectly from the mids, and from there to the basses. Also another nice touch on this Taylor is the green in the purflings, which is something we don’t see too often from Taylor. Come check it out!

From the late, great Lance McCollum, we’ve got a sweet 2002 Prototype Slope D in The Tree Mahogany and Adirondack Spruce. Lightweight and agile, this McCollum has a very quick response and deliciously crisp trebles. The Tree is such fantastically figured tonewood, it’s always a special treat to see it used on such a lively and exciting guitar, and it pairs nicely here with Adirondack Spruce on top for extra power and drive. Under the hood there’s a K&K Pure Mini pickup (one of our all-time favorites), and this McCollum comes wrapped up in a TKL case for those rare moments when you won’t have it in hand.

Ervin Somogyi is one of the most sought after builders in the luthiery scene today. He has helped blaze the trail for what we now consider to be the modern guitar, so when we get word of a Somogyi coming in everyone in the shop puts down what they’re doing to take a look and a listen. When this OM arrived we were having a house concert. Steve Baughman was in the room warming up when we brought the box in and when he found out what was in the box, he immediately stopped playing and said “Open that thing up!” That’s the kind of weight a Somogyi can pull.

This OM in Brazilian and German Spruce is exactly what we have come to expect from Ervin. The aesthetic is one hundred percent Somogyi, from the segmented rosette to the beautiful bridge and body shape. Everything about this guitar is enticing, but it’s when you play the first note that you see what all the fuss is about. The tone of this guitar is like no other, fat and clear, full and ringing. The basses are huge and thunderous and feel like they could be coming from a grand piano, and the trebles, bell like and meaty, make a perfect match to the bass. This is a wonderful guitar that not only sounds and looks incredible, it is also a great representation of a luthier whose work has changed the way the industry thinks about what a guitar should be.

This Taylor custom GS in Sinker Redwood and East Indian Rosewood is a flat out fingerpicking monster. This Custom GS is one of the best we have played from Taylor, It has a warm and sweet voice that reminds you of being snuggled up to the fire on a cold winters night. The howling wolf inlay is tastefully done and enhances the dark color tones of the woods used. This guitar would make player and collector alike incredibly happy.

Here we have an R. Taylor style 1 in Red Spruce and “The Tree” quilted Mahogany. We currently have a twelve string here from R. Taylor made from the very same wood combination, and it has been interesting to see how the two different versions compare. This six string has a full voice with plenty of headroom thanks to the Red Spruce and an underlying woodiness that we expect from Mahogany. This really is an incredibly comfortable guitar to play, great for intimate practice or the big stage alike.

Mario Beauregard was one of the early apprentices of Ervin Somogyi along with Michihiro Matsuda. Mario’s guitars are superbly built, with a little of that Somogyi flare that he picked up during the apprenticeship. This OM in Italian Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood is an all out fingerpickers dream. The tone is decadent, trebles blend perfectly with the bass creating a nice fat sound that is just brilliant. There is a good reason why renowned fingerstyle player Antoine Dufour plays a Beauregaurd as his main guitar, they are responsive and able to produce any tone you can dream up.

Built to the highest standards of Southern Spanish construction, the guitars in the Ramirez R line are an affordable alternative to their NE and Concert lines. Without the cypress lined back and sides, these guitars are an adaptation of the traditional Ramirez designs. Built in East Indian Rosewood and silky Red Cedar, the R4 is lightweight and quick to respond. The top model in the R line, the R4 offers beautiful quality of sound and gorgeous aesthetics. Using only the finest grades of wood and carefully crafted in the traditional Spanish style, the R4 is a force with which to be reckoned!

Paul Reed Smith is known for building some of the finest electric guitars in the world, pick up this McCarty Signature edition and you will know why. This guitar will take your breath away; The quilted maple top is of a super rare quality only enhanced by the excellent stain work. Paul Reed Smith himself oversaw the construction of this guitar, the build quality is flawless. Versatility is the name of the game here, if you want it to sound like a Stratocaster it will, or how about a Les Paul? it can do that too, or play around with the selectors and find a sound all your own!

We are big fans of Jeffrey Yong here at Dream Guitars. Jeffrey is able to achieve an incredibly consistent tone from one guitar to another, so we know when we get a new Yong, it will sound great right out of the case. This JJ-MP has all the hallmarks of a Yong guitar. From the Monkeypod and Bearclaw Sitka Spruce to the comfy arm bevel and cutaway scoop. The tone of this guitar is all modern with big open basses and bright ringing trebles. This guitar is a work of art you will have to come in and see!

This Avante Gryphon by Veillette in Sitka Spruce and Mahogany is one of the most fun and inspiring guitars we have played! You can play any song that you know on a standard guitar and play it on the Gryphon for a wonderful mandolin effect. Playing one of these Gryphons is an almost meditative experience, with the drones of the strings making the sound full and chorus like. These little six course guitars are expertly built and play as easy as a dream right out of the box. The neck attachment is left to one bolt, so adjustments are a breeze. They are favorites of many headlining artists around the world and it’s easy to see why: with a unique and intriguing aesthetic, incredibly versatile tonal range and a perfectly palatable price point, the Avante Gryphon is a strong contender for that next instrument you’ve been thinking of…

This is a stunning Somogyi 1980 Modified Dreadnought in East Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce. It’s remarkable to play this guitar and hear firsthand the fingerstyle voicing that Ervin Somogyi was so critical in developing in the early years when steel string guitars were first recorded solo. Tonally, this guitar has a rich, expressive middle register and a low-end with presence and warmth. With three decades of play time to open up the Sitka Spruce top, this guitar has smooth action and fearsome projection. All the warmth and richness that Ervin is so well known for? This guitar has in spades. This guitar is a great piece of Luthier history, the serial number is 62, and the label is from the Berkley shop. This is a rare guitar just waiting for someone to love it for another 30 years!

Marc Maingard‘s instruments are long standing favorites here at the Dream Guitars shop due to their breathtaking looks and tone. Marc’s native environs of Scarborough, South Africa clearly influenced his work as here where the stunning landscape manifests in this lovely Grand Concert model. Built from rosy-cheeked European Spruce and a colorful and vibrant set of Brazilian Rosewood, this guitar has excellent focus from string to string, with a shimmer that adds a wonderful complexity to the sound. Marc has been a performer for many years and knows precisely how a guitar should play and feel; This GC is one of the easiest playing instruments we have ever had in the shop, no matter where you play up or down the fingerboard. And with the sleek arm bevel and rib rest, this is a guitar that anyone can feel comfortable playing, even those with shoulder issues. This is an incredible guitar from a master craftsman and it deserves a place in your home!

This is the first guitar we have had in the shop from North Carolina-based luthier Wes Lambe, and boy are we impressed. Just holding this Jumbo 000, you really get a sense of the passion Wes has for building guitars. Wes has a great ear when its comes to voicing his instruments, and this particular one has a full and rich tone with a panoply of pleasing overtones. The time-honored combination of Brazilian Rosewood and Adirondack Spruce has been utilized to full effect here, and the evenness of tone and power from string to string, up and down the fingerboard, is remarkable. Without a doubt, this is a perfect fingerstyle guitar, with enough headroom to be really dug into with a plectrum if needed. Wes has garnered some high praise from incredible players like Pat Metheny, Charlie Hunter, Mark Kelly, and quite a few others, so you know his guitars can really sing. Grab this little gem while you can, it won’t be around long!

This Henderson D-18 in Red Spruce and Mahogany is how a pre war style guitar should be done, and is a perfect example of why Henderson guitars are so sought after. This thing is a flatpicking cannon, it would be hard to find a better suited flatpicking guitar. When you pick this guitar up you instantly realize why Wayne is so well regarded in the guitar world. His guitar are light as a feather, superbly built, and sound like heaven. This is as good as it gets in the D-18 world, if you are looking for the wholly grail of bluegrass guitars, look no further.

Here we have a custom, Mint condition custom Cornerstone guitar in Brazilian Roswood and Red Cedar by luthier Peter Marreiros. Originally built for renowned nylon string player Rodrigo Rodriguez, this steel string guitar has a 1 15/16″ (49 mm) wide nut, making it ideal for someone transitioning from nylon to steel or the fingerstylist looking for a wider neck. The combination of Brazilian and Cedar gives this guitar incredible responsiveness and clarity, with truly pianistic note separation. And while the slotted headstock and 12 fret body joint hearken back to classical roots, this one has modern fingerstyle appointments like a Ryan style arm bevel, custom leaf-shaped soundport. This is a guitar that sounds stunning and can fill a large room by itself, ready to go on the main stage!

This Soderlund Multi Scale Short Baritone is one of the easiest guitars to get into “The Groove” with that we have had come in to the shop recently. We could spend hours with it. This thing is absolutely packed full of mojo and ready to jump up and play at a moment’s notice. Everything we played on it seems to have a little extra emotion behind it, thanks to the combination of the lovely Ovangkol back and sides and Sitka Spruce top. Some baritones can be difficult to play because of the longer scale, but this Soderlund with its 13 fret body joint and multiscalar design is incredibly easy on the hands.

This is our first guitar from German luthier Wilm Stotzel, and it is quickly becoming a shop favorite. This is Wilms Zoe Small Jumbo model in German Spruce and Wenge, and it sings out with full round basses and powerful trebles. Wilm attended one of Ervin Somogyi’s voicing classes and the inspiration shows in this build. He achieved a balanced tone here perfectly suited for complex fingerpicking melodies, but versatile enough for light struming and flatpicking as well. This guitar draws the player in and inspires endless playtime, it is a true joy.

We loved this one so much that we teamed up with Al Petteway and recorded it on our latest album: Dream Guitars Volume II Hand Picked. It is Track #4 – When We Were Young.

Nick kukich has always impressed us with these Franklin guitars, they are superbly voiced with a wide open sound that just envelopes the player. Franklins are in high demand, as soon as we get one in you can count on them heading back out again in no time. This OM in German Spruce and Brazilian Rosewood, has aged beautifully and will almost vibrate off of your lap. It is just that responsive and ready to make music! Once Again Nick Kukich proves why his guitars are so sought after, this is a killer guitar that needs a great home!

Here we have a mindblowingly beautiful 2011 Ryan Signature Series Nightingale Grand Soloist with premium dark Brazilian Rosewood and Italian Spruce. Add to that the Fluted Arm Bevel, custom Abalone Rosette and Kevin’s renowned EO Bracing and you have an instrument you won’t want to take your eyes away from!

The bass response on this guitar is phenomenal, with all the clarity and sparkle that we look for in a high end fingerstyle instrument. It has a breadth and depth of tone that we rarely see, and the low end has an almost untamed nature about it that leads you to explore unknown passages and possibilities. It’s for instruments like this that we began this company, and we look forward to hearing your thoughts!

Let the Somogyi party commence! We just got in another Brazilian Rosewood Mod D, this time #231 built in 1999! This Mod D has the immense, triumphant bass for which Ervin has garnered praise from across the globe, along with fat, round trebles and a clean midrange to balance out the voice.

Stylistically this Mod D has more bells and whistles than a circus troup of clowns trying to fit in a washing machine: set off by a sparkling French Polished European Top, Ervin’s signature segmented rosette, carved bridge, and delicately crenellated headstock reveal an aesthetic at once elegant and exciting. The play feel is effortlessly smooth. Somogyi’s work stands at the pinnacle of contemporary guitar building, and this particular offering is just begging to be the lifelong companion for some lucky player. On stage with the dual source Joe Mills microphone and B-Band AST pickup, or travelling alongside you in its Calton case (and Colorado Case Cover), this 1999 Mod D is ready for anything and everything.

This is an A style Mandolin in Sitka Spruce and Flamed Maple from luthier Wes Lambe. Wes is a newcomer to us here at Dream Guitars and he has set himself a high standard with everything we have seen. The build quality and voicing on this mando are fantastic – it has a great “chop” but also a warmth and charisma that we don’t often find in A styles. Volume is something you won’t have to worry about with this mandolin, you can play it sweet and soft or really dig into it if you are in a bluegrass jam.
