2022 Keystone Jujube, Brazilian Rosewood/Sinker Cedar
Keystone Guitars crafted us this wonderful Jujube model featuring Brazilian Rosewood plus Sinker Cedar. Snakewood appointments throughout, plus a custom and stunningly executed inlay design along the fingerboard and headplate, makes for a striking aesthetic–and these qualities of beauty are echoed in the voice as well. Great punch, clarity, and power, all at the same time coming from a small-bodied design. Frankly, we don’t know how Keisuke pulls it off.

Keisuke Nishi of Keystone Guitars, you can send us a guitar any day! This SJ is unreal. Expressive, articulate, powerful yet clean—perfect for modern fingerstyle. Multiscale setup at 26.25-25.5 inches makes for effortless playability in Standard and all the way down to CGCGCD territory, and the upgraded Brazilian Rosewood and bearclaw German Spruce make sure that the voice remains consistent, clear, and dynamic no matter what tuning you’re in. A dramatically scooped rib bevel (also in Brazilian Rosewood) adds creature comfort; ditto for a soundport at the upper bout and a florentine cutaway. Additionally, Takayuki Ogawa of Ogawa Inlay Craft in Niigata prefecture inlaid a gorgeous scene of maple leaves and Mt. Fuji at the headstock and fretboard that perfectly complements the gold Alessi tuners—and the 3D Amboyna Burl rosette at the other end of the fretboard.

So good, and so gone. We couldn’t manage to hold onto this brand new Keystone SJ for a second before a lucky client snatched it up! This is our latest spec build from Keisuke Nishi, which Paul based off his personal specs. Thus, premium Brazilian Rosewood back and sides (as well as bindings, bridge, fretboard, headpalate—and neck!) with German Spruce on top, multiscale setup at 26.25-25.5”, and an exquisitely executed inlay sprawling along frets 4-10.
This one-piece BRW neck is a real gem, and part of what gives this Keystone its very clean, very dynamic sustain and projection. What a voice, this one has. The bass response is thunderous, yet paired perfectly with a present midrange and smooth trebles. It’s practically perfect.Other keywords: keystone guitars, lutherie, spec guitar, custom guitar, japanese guitar, ales, soundport, sound port

This is why we do what we do: pairing up players with builders. Keisuke Nishi of Keystone Guitars recently finished up a commission for one of our clients after they played our last Keystone—and this SJ is 100% magic. Supremely rich, red Cocobolo back and sides are paired with a German Spruce top, Keisuke’s scalloped Burl rosette, and bedecked with Ogawa Inlay Craft inlays along the headstock and fretboard in a motif of a full moon over low hills.

This guitar is a piece of history from one of the most talented young luthiers working today. Nishi Keisuke’s first guitar in 2006 after his apprenticeship with Mario Beauregard, this SJ-C is what happens when talent and patience come together: an instrument of astounding depth and flawless playability. Western Red Cedar for warmth and range, Honduran Mahogany for depth and attack, and an SJ body for balanced tone–this guitar is the trifecta for Fingerstyle music. The trebles are bright and present, and the guitar exhibits projection which is expansive but not overwhelming, meaning that even delicate waltzs or somber airs sound clear and expressive. Nishi’s honed the low-end to have a well-defined edge which persists even in lowered tunings, making the SJ-C an instrument that can easily handle your eclectic tunings. Thanks to a gorgeous set of Honduran Mahogany for the back and sides, this guitar is responsive like lightning, sonorous as thunder.

It is always an honor to feature one of Keisuke Nishi’s guitars in our store. Formerly one of Mario Beauregard’s apprentices, Keisuke’s work is absorbed by muscular voicing and 3-dimensionality–and the 2015 SJ we have here showcases both. From Keisuke’s furrowed rosette (made of Amboyna Burl with a narrow channel routed through the center), to his painstakingly sculpted cutaway and heel block, whereby the profile of the heel continues down and into the Florentine Cutaway, this guitar is as much a work of art as it is an instrument. When you stumble across the smaller details–the magnetic bone truss rod cover or the gracefully mitered Brazilian Rosewood fretboard–it’s almost enough to take your breath away. But you’ll want to keep your wits about you, because once you actually strum a chord on this SJ, you will be overwhelmed by the immensity of the voice, how the middle registers expand and hang on the air, and the trebles murmur with airy overtones. This guitar has heaps of headroom! Clear and focused, the SJ has excellent balance. Keisuke knew what he was doing when he paired Cocobolo Rosewood back and sides with German Moon Spruce, and we’re grateful to have this inspiring instrument in our midst.

We love getting in guitars from builders we haven’t had in the shop before. It is at once a fun and inspiring experience to see what new ideas luthiers are coming up with. Keisuke Nishi, the man behind Keystone guitars, was an apprentice of Mario Beauregard, who trained under insdustry legend Ervin Somogyi himself. The fact that Nishi worked under such a capable master was a major indicator for us that Keisuke has incredible skill and talent for building guitars, so we were already excited to see his work. Then we heard and played it and couldn’t be happier!
This Keystone Mod-D in Granadillo and Adirondack (Red) Spruce has the build quality and voice we have come to expect from a builder coming out of the Somogyi school of building. This Mod-D sings as sweet as a bird when fingerpicked and has a full, resonant bass that seems to jump at a player’s touch. Pick it lightly and it will resonate with warmth and brilliance. Pick it a little bit harder and it will shine and shimmer. This is a guitar that has a mastery of all things fingerstyle and will surely bring you to new heights as a player.

Built in Leningrad in 1978 this excellent classical guitar is the work of luthier Andrei Khomiachkov. It was originally owned by noted Russian virtuoso Alexander Frauchi; one of two Khomiachkov guitars that he owned. The Khomiachkov is well built, and its point of origin notwithstanding, has a decidedly Spanish tone. The overall volume and projection are superb and it plays extremely well. This is a concert level guitar priced for everyone.

We search long and hard here at Dream Guitars to find the best of every type of guitar for our customers. In BCKingston Guitars we have not only found you the best, but they come at a wonderful price point. This CR-E model is a worldclass 17″ Archtop from Brain Kingston crafted in the highest quality at his shop in beautiful Prince Edward Island. But what our pictures can’t show you is how alive and responsive this guitar is. It’s amazing and it rivals any Archtop at twice the price. This should not be a surprise as Brian has over 30 years of experience building his archtops. We are truly delighted to now represent BCKingston Guitars. From Brian Kingston “The CR-E was designed to have a homogenous look. The maple bindings, part of the 3 piece maple/ebony purfling/binding setup, are cut from the same piece of wood as the sides, matching up the curl where feasible.”

What player hasn’t longed for one of those great old Gibson 335s. Well once you play this Kingston Fusion you’ll never want a Gibson again. The craftsmenship and tone of this guitar are extraordinary. Much more responsive than a factory build semi-hollow guitar and the woods are top notch. We love the rich brown stain on this stunning solid Quilted Maple carved top. The Bigsby Tremolo and custom Fralin Pickups give it versatility and style. The playability and tone are superb, as you would expect from a luthier with over 30 years of experience. This is the real deal, a custom, handmade semi-hollow guitar perfect for blues, jazz and of course Fusion. From Brian Kingston “The Fusion is my take on this venerable guitar. To find more tone I’ve replaced the plywood top, back and sides of the “335” with solid select tone woods. The Fusions mahagony neck, sides, kerfing, centerblock and fully carved back form a homogenous unit that really warms the tone and feeds the sustain. When the bite of the fully carved premium quilted or European curly maple top is coupled with the clarity, articulation and punch of the custom order Lindy Fralin humbuckers and added to the equation; the result is that the Fusion is capable of almost pure acoustic sounds right up thru those big, fat, creamy Duane Allman sounds.”

Stephen Kinnaird’s P-1c is a petite powerhouse if ever we saw one. Modeled after the early Martin 1-18 design, the Kinnaird P-1c weighs in under four pounds with a trim lower bout of 12 7/8” and sides that taper from 3 1/2” at the heel to 4” at the tail. This 2010 beauty comes decked out with select Figured Maple back and sides and an Engelmann Spruce top with dark sunburst, Florentine Cutaway for a touch of the modern. Brazilian Rosewood bindings, head plate, bridge, and rosette! And Stephen’s MOP inlay chops sprawling across the guitar from rosette to tuners.
Short scale at 25”, plus a 12-fret body join, makes for sweetness to mellow the bright Maple projection. We enjoyed putting this one through its paces in Standard and Open G, and while it shines best with a fingerpicker’s touch we found it also held up well for some strumming. The treble strings have a round, smooth quality that ties it all together in a sweet voice.Other keywords: steven kinnaird, parlour guitar, ameritage, englemann

While exploring somewhere deep into the cavernous recesses of the Luthier’s Mercantile lumber supply, Stephen Kinnaird discovered an incredible set of Bubinga that he just had to have. Once he paired it with a delicious Sinker Redwood top, the guitar practically built itself. This 2014 P-1 is brand new, and already the voice is absurd. Use whichever words you prefer–huge, fat, grand, rich, enveloping, sonorous–and they will all come up a bit short to describe the complexity of this instrument. Notes might actually sustain for days. Give it a strum and start counting, and while you wait for those sweet, rich notes to expire, explore the depths of the whorls in the Bubinga back and sides, and the panoply of colors in the Sinker Redwood top. You might find yourself caught between staring and playing. Stephen knows how to build a Parlor guitar, that much is certain.
