Brand New Klein Big Pink 457, Pink Ivory/Bearclaw Sitka
Honestly, does this thing have a ceiling? Cuz we can’t find it. We laid into it with a multitude of tunings, attacks, nails and picks, and “Big Pink” kept coming back for more. Well, we did learn one thing: this Klein’s got bottom end to spare. Our teeth are still chattering at the memory of playing it. Steve Klein and Steve Kauffman have pulled off an incredible feat here with this 457 model. Jaw dropping Pink Ivory for the back and sides are matched with a Pink Ivory fretboard, bridge, and headstock veneer—and they pulled out a gorgeously bearclaw figured Sitka Spruce top (at a fearsome 17” lower bout, we wonder where they found these sets?). And Larry Robinson flowers and vines round out the package at the headstock.
The voice is exactly what you’d expect from Klein & Kauffman: huge, expansive, voluminous, and at the same time precise, clear, defined. We don’t know how they manage to strike that razor edge balance, but the proof is in the Big Pink-flavored pudding.Other keywords: custom guitar, custom build, lutherie, luthier, steve kauffman, steve klein, big guitar, bass response, gotoh, ameritage

Perfectly in tune, right on down to D and C tunings: our 2018 Klein & Kaufman 396, and yes, it comes in multiscale. 26.25” on the bass on down to 25.125” on the trebles, the spread is a pinch over an inch and makes for easy playability and reliable string tension and intonation in altered tunings. Sitka Spruce top, Flamed Koa back and sides, Maple bindings and gold EVO frets for longevity. This Klein is built for the long haul.
There’s excellent string definition, especially between the A and D strings, that helps render notes in crisp detail. There’s clarity to the treble overtones, and a lively response across the board. There’s a lot, frankly, going on. We love how easily this one plays, and at only 4lbs 1oz, this Klein 396 is featherlight in your hands. The latest 457 from Klein & Kauffman has arrived—and it’s not one we’ll soon forget. The brand new “Blanca” 457 in English Sycamore and Engelmann Spruce is a force of nature. The lower bout measures in at 18 inches (even though the total weight is a slim 4lbs 7oz), and the expansive Engelmann top is tuned for instant response, even with a light touch. Played with flatpicks or fingertips, we could only find bright, balanced notes and easy-on-the-ears string separation, and Kauffman’s dialed in the setup on this Blanca to be nice and easy on the hands.
Here you’ll find Holly bindings, integrated Ivoroid nut, and Klein’s hallmark bridge with individual saddles. The sharp headstock angle maintains a consistent break angle for the strings for extra clarity and projection, and the whole package comes wrapped up in a custom Ameritage hardshell case that fits snug and secure.Other keywords: steve klein, steve kauffman, fingerstyle, carbon fiber, gotoh

Another typical Steve Klein guitar, in that there is nothing typical about this guitar. In fact, this is a prototype from 1998 for the M-43 model, featuring an access panel below the neck heel and all-wood braces in the typical arcing Klein fashion. Indian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka Spruce top, and a Brazilian Rosewood bridge with added mass and surface area on the bass side. Here you’ll find a one-piece bone saddle, which is an interesting departure from other Kleins, and the 1 3/4″ pearl nut is integrated into the headstock veneer and capped with a zero fret. A 25.4” scale extends over nicely crowned frets and terminates at the saddle with 2 1/8” string spacing. The Rosewood neck is smoothly contoured in a C shape that’s slim enough to pass for an electric, and the lack of a traditional heel enables the left hand to easily access the upper frets.
This Prototype M-43 is great for both fingers and picks, but really shines as an explosive strummer. Flatpicked tunes ring out beautifully in the clear, punchy attack that defines the voice. The focused upper and mid registers are balanced by a thunderclap bass response that manages to be enveloping and articulate at the same time. Explorations into dropped tuning territory yielded excellent results; the play feel remained crisp and the bass actually mellowed so as to further improve the balance across the registers. Wrapped up in a custom-fit (thankfully!) Calton flight case, this ’98 M-43 is a unique glimpse into the evolution of Steve Klein’s lutherie genius.

This is a first for Dream Guitars: a brand new Klein 396! From the two Steves that matter most (Klein & Kauffman, respectively), we have a gorgeous example of contemporary, freethinking lutherie at its razor’s edge. Where to begin? Let’s start with the basics: impressively colorful Myrtlewood for the back, sides, neck, and headstock backstrap; Sitka Spruce top; 25 1/2″ scale, iconic Klein bridge plus individual string saddles, nut integrated into the headstock with a zero fret; distinctive floating and carbon-fiber-reinforced braces.
To discuss the tone of this instrument, let’s first start with one provision: that Klein guitars just don’t sound (or look) like other flattop guitars. Klein & Kauffman have managed to find themselves an honest niche in this already niche market, and this medium-sized 396 confirms that. The trebles have at once a breathy quality and a wide range of response. Which is to say, there’s a dynamic overtone response that comes out in different places across the fretboard, and the upper register itself has great body and poise. That responsiveness is well-mated to the even-keeled middle register and the defined, crisp basses.
While powerful, this Klein 396 is hardly boomy; rather, the overall voice is balanced like only a Klein can be, with equal space for each string and register. It lends itself to lowered tunings, especially spacious arrangements with floating open strings–but let’s be honest, just about anything sounds wonderful on this new Klein. This, friends, is a guitar you need to experience firsthand.

Getting a Klein in your shop is like opening your birthday presents and finding exactly what you asked for: the gift of this Klein is, like all of Steve’s guitars, a gift of immense proportions. Frankly, we wonder were Steve manages to find so many gorgeous sets for his larger-than-life tops and backs, like the gorgeous Sitka Spruce and Flamed Maple here. Bound in yet more Maple and with Klein’s trademark asymetrical, pinless bridge, the body of this L45.7 is surprisingly lightweight (weighing in at 4lbs 3oz for the entire guitar), and features an access port by the endpin so you can take a glimpse into Klein’s complex and fascinating innovations in bracing systems, from the carbon fiber reinforcement to the flying X brace that shoots down to the sides from the center of the X.
As expected, the bass is cavernous, bone-rattling. Paired with crisp, agile trebles, that fearsome bass response creates a huge wall of sound with each strum–and just wait until you put this bombshell in altered tunings! Truly, the Klein guitar is a unique manifestation of contemporary guitar design; each Klein as powerful and complex as two or three lesser guitars combined. Plus, this L45.7 comes with a Calton flight case to ensure that no harm can come to it.

Looking for a full-bodied guitar with a huge, enveloping voice and the playability of a parlor? This, one of Steve Klein’s first guitars, can foot the bill–and then some. Built in 1976 as a lightly-braced model, this L45.7 has gorgeously tight-grained Brazilian Rosewood back, sides, neck, fretboard, and headstock, and a Spruce top which, when tapped, murmurs about the sheer depths of the guitar’s voice. Any fingerstyle arrangement will sound like heaven when these strings are set to vibrating. As we mentioned, this is one of Klein’s first guitars, when he was just beginning to experiment with the shape and design of acoustic steel string instruments, has a unique provenance: in this L45.7 you can see where many of his innovations will have come from. Moreover, this is an amazingly large-voiced and articulate guitar which performs best with lowered string tension to accentuate both the dynamic range it’s capable of and the almost breathy ease with which the Rosewood neck can be fretted.

A guitar from luthier Steve Klein is an experience unlike any other. An instrument like this 2003 Klein M43 has stepped outside the land of traditional construction, and explores a new (and curvaceous) realm of possibility. Accordingly, the bass response has a depth and scope to it which speaks in clear, articulate sentences about what a low E string can sound like, if given the opportunity. Folks, Klein has most certainly given this guitar the opportunity, both to express itself with an enormous, enveloping voice and to maintain a focused, precise tone. Trebles which sing confidently, accompanied by subtle shimmering overtones, and a middle register perfectly attuned to the overall balance of the voice–these features help establish this guitar’s incredibly complex, defined tone. For such a large instrument, it’s effortless to play, thanks in no small part to Klein’s delicately thicknessed Spruce top, East Indian Rosewood back and sides, and lightweight bracing system. More than capable, this M43 is an opportunity to explore new textures and plumb new acoustic depths–and the Highlander IP-2 Pickup and Internal Mic allows those explorations to spill into electric territory with amplification that’s 100% faithful to the M43‘s acoustic range.

In this shop full of strange and wonderful guitars, a regular ole Klein guitar would fit right in. But this? The Deco? Instead, one of the five large-bodied guitars that Steve Kleincollaborated with Steve Kauffman and Paul Schmidt to create? No, this calibre of unique stands alone, even in a room of Symogyis, Matsudas, Walkers, and Olsons. These guitars are living legends, both in terms of their collectibility and the ferociousness of their voice. Klein’s guitars look almost as different as they sound, and that’s not a bad thing: the voice that booms out of this wide Brazilian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce soundbox is enveloping, loud, gorgeously articulate, with mids full of richness and a low end that sneaks up on your ear, until you find your head absolutely teeming with its huge, expansive voice–and all without the aid of a soundport in the upper bout! The custom made tuners (from David Rogers), integral Pearl nut, and Pearl-and-Abalone rosette which crouches on the bottom of the Ebony fretboard, when combined with Klein’s trademark asymetrical bridge and extra-wide lower bout, reveals a guitar which strikes as fresh and exciting a figure as its energetic and polyphonous voice. This guitar comes with a custom Calton Flightcase.

Having a Steve Klein guitar in the shop is always a treat, and this M-43 is no exception. This monster is still young (having been brought to life only in 1997), but has a voice which seems to come from another place, another era altogether. Thanks to the 16 3/4″ lower bout, this larger-than-life guitar has a low-end which is cavernous and resounding, and yet is paired with trebles that are instantly responsive and crisp as bells. Despite its voluptuous dimensions, the M-43 feels natural in your lap, and is effortless to play–one of but several reasons why Joni Mitchell, Michael Hedges, Steve Miller, Andy Summers, and Sting prefer to play Kleins!
With Indian Rosewood back and sides and a Sitka Spruce top (both Master Grade), you can rest assured that the voice has herculean strength. The top is drum-thin and has a tap tone which resonates wildly. Klein achieves this degree of thinnness with his progressive bracing techniques, which manifest in an arching ply baffle in the M-43 which connects the soundhole to the sides and helps project sound outward. Bundled with a Calton Flight Case and a Highlander IP-1 pickup, this M-43 is the complete package: fingerpicked or strummed, acoustic or amplified, at home or on the road, this guitar delivers the goods.

And now for something completely different! Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein commissioned a one-of-a-kind instrument that started with a completed Steve Klein top from the 1990s and became much more…
Paul collaborated with Luthiers Steve Kaufman and Jason Harshbarger to build this wonderful Klein inspired Jumbo guitar.Rare Pink Ivory wood was chosen for the back and sides and layered with Rosewood for added projection. A Klein solid Rosewood neck was added for feel and sustain and a Klein L-45.7 Bridge as well. Inlay artist extraordinaire, Larry Robinson was enlisted to create the stunning inlay designs by German Art Nouveau artist Peter Behrens. The inlay has a real sense of movement and flow and is done completely in real silver! Inset into the headstock is a hand carved solid Ivory Moon Face by Ron Fromkin. The body was then completely bound in real Ivory and tuner buttons carved from the same. So in addition to Pink Ivory wood, there is real salvaged Ivory in abundance. Something very rare these days.
There is a plaque affixed to the back on the inside (next to an original Klein label) that has all of us that participated and a quote, along with the name of the guitar – Pink Ivory Moon – it’s engraved real ivory as well. The finish is an oil finish with a French polish top. To keep it safe there is an original Klein Calton Case as well. Truly a work of art and an incredible musical instrument capable of voices that only a Steve Klein voiced top could produce. Big bass, bright trebles and everything in between.

Paul Schmidt, musician, teacher, designer and author of The Art and Times of Steve Klein worked with Jason Harshbarger of Highland Strings to build this Klein inspired 12 string guitar.
It started with a Klein Spruce top, bridge and solid Brazilian Rosewood Neck. The body was bound in Holly wood which frames the Mahogany body beautifully. Paul enlisted inlay artist Larry Robinson to create a simple and artistic fretboad inlay in copper. Inset into the headstock is a fossil-like Fern carving. On the back is a bloodwood Asian character that stands for ‘awareness’, “something the world needs much more of” says Paul Schmidt.
To complete the project a hand-made wooden case was created featuring vintage latches and handle and a Jade Oroboros adorns the interior. Paul used this guitar with heavier strings tuned down to D. It has a loud and deep voice that remains beautiful at all times. Not harsh some some 12 strings can be. It plays very easily and the Rosewood neck feels amazing.

This Klein M.43 is a like a full band in a box, the voice is complex and huge. Not big and boomy, but big, clear and beautiful. The M.43 body is 16 3/4″ at the lower bout but it’s easy to hold sitting or standing. Klein necks always play tremendously well, it’s easy to fret anywhere on the neck and intonation is superb. Micheal Hedges’ symbol adorns the 12th fret of the board as well. This one is Indian Rosewood and Sitka Spruce, both are Master Grade and exquisite and it comes through in the voice of this rare preowned Steve Klein M.43.
