2011 Walter Millennium Classical, Brazilian Rosewood/Redwood
From venerable luthier and classical guitarist Steven Walter, we’ve got a special Millennium model in the shop today that is an absolute delight. This 2011 Millennium was Steven’s personal guitar for several years, and has the rich and opened up voice to prove it. Brazilian Rosewood back and sides over Redwood, an elevated fingerboard in Thomas Humphrey’s style, fan bracing up top and twin soundports flanking the neck heel. 650mm scale and a medium thickness neck; weighs in under four pounds; responsive to a range of attacks and articulate to a fault.

Plug this one into the mainline! What a powerhouse. Steven Walter’s been building in the Humphrey Millennium style for years, each time resulting in a strong, vigorous voice, and this beauty from 2013 is just that. Great fundamental, with a powerful projection from the elevated fingerboard and activated top; plus twin soundports to add a bit of “me in the monitors” fo the player. The back and sides are dramatically figured Malaysian Blackwood, and we’ve got Cedar on top. A softer tone wood than Spruce, but here producing a crisp and dynamic tone. 650mm scale feels right at home, and Walter added a side dot at the seventh fret for easier fretboard orienteering.

We relish classicals that capture our attention from the first pluck, and this 2003 Concert Classical from Steven Walter did just that. Clarity, energy, and responsiveness characterize this beautiful example of Steven’s work, here in Madagascar Rosewood and European Spruce. The elevated fingerboard in the style of Thomas Humphrey’s Millenium Classical helps upper fret access, and adds to the sheer resonance and projection of the Euro Spruce top. A single side dot at the seventh fret is a modern concession that we find incredibly helpful. The neck has a decently full D shape that’s easy on the hands, and playability is superb. Hauser-style Rodgers tuners are a wonder to look at, and even more so to tune, and the entire guitar is French Polished for maximum resonance.
This is a cherished Walter Classical that’s been taken care of over the past 15 years, and it’s definitely more than ready to keep at it!Other keywords: nylon string, stephen walter, fingerstyle, classical music, rosette, lutherie, luthier

Our latest beauty from Germany’s Wilm Stötzel is just that: gorgeous from tuners to tail, with a voice to match. Here we find Wilm’s Small Jumbo model decked out with Wenge back and sides and an Italian Spruce top, 25.5” scale for a touch added power and projection, and gorgeous geometric motifs at the rosette and headstock veneer. This instrument excels for fingerstyle playing, and has the right amount of depth and clarity to work wonders with a flatpick as well. Naturally, we had a blast with the Stötzel tuned to DADGAD.
The voice is clean, clear, and balanced across the registers, with a vibrant string energy that we really got lost in. And this beauty is only going to open up and open up!Other keywords: fingerstyle guitar, modern guitar, somogyi, stoetzel, winge, fingerpicking

This is only our second Stotzel guitar in the shop, but we wish it was the third or fourth! Playing one of Wilm’s guitars is like having your own personal muse at hand at all times–if the richness of the voice can’t inspire you, the low-profile neck and silk-smooth setup will definitely tip you over the edge into new arrangements and compositions! We’ve got Palo Escrito Rosewood back and sides, an interesting choice which gives Stotzel’s Grand Auditorium “Courage” the pop and responsiveness of a Maple guitar, with an extra dose of tonal dynamism. Add to that a cream colored plate of the ever-adored Sitka Spruce, and you’ve got an instrument capable of explosive projection and soothing sustain in your hands.
Looking for a guitar that’s equal parts fingerstyle dream and flatpicking dynamo? Look no further: the excellent balance across the registers makes this an excellent tool to explore your fingertips’ wildest imaginations, and the snappy, articulate low-end really opens up under a flatpick with moderate to aggressive attack. When you’re not playing Courage (read: if you’re not playing Courage), there’s plenty of well-appointed eye candy to satisfy the sweet tooth of your guitar collector’s aesthetic, from the thin, emerald green purflings and asymmetrically shaped heel to the gold Gotoh 510 tuners with Ebony knobs. Bound up in a Hiscox Pro II hardshell case, there’s no chance for harm to come to this courageous beauty from Germany, so you better be prepared to carry this guitar wherever you go, so you won’t have to go too long without playing it.

This is our first guitar from German luthier Wilm Stotzel, and it is quickly becoming a shop favorite. This is Wilms Zoe Small Jumbo model in German Spruce and Wenge, and it sings out with full round basses and powerful trebles. Wilm attended one of Ervin Somogyi’s voicing classes and the inspiration shows in this build. He achieved a balanced tone here perfectly suited for complex fingerpicking melodies, but versatile enough for light struming and flatpicking as well. This guitar draws the player in and inspires endless playtime, it is a true joy.
We loved this one so much that we teamed up with Al Petteway and recorded it on our latest album: Dream Guitars Volume II Hand Picked. It is Track #4 – When We Were Young.

Here’s one for the professionals out there. Stephen Strahm’s Eros model, especially this lovely number from 2021 with German Spruce over Granadillo, has great balance across the registers, a clean projection, and lots of headroom. In short, a guitar that you can do just about anything with. Lean in, and it’s got growl. Pull back, and a touch of sweetness in the mids will warm things up. We had as much fun playing fast as slow, in standard or down to DADGAD. It’s fun! Energetic, quick, one you don’t want to put down.

We originally custom ordered this all Mahogany resonator after hearing Joseph Striebel’s resos on a recording by own of his professional customers in Germany. We trimmed in Curly Maple trim instead of the typical white Ivoroid for a more beautiful look. We also requested a short 24.9″ scale for easy tension and had him install a McIntyre Feather pickup so it’s ready for stage. The tone is strong with the woody character an all-Mahogany body produces.

We custom ordered this guitar with Cocobolo Rosewood, German Spruce, a cutaway and a slotted headstock. We are thrilled with the results, it’s not only striking but the tone is warm, rich and punchy. This one is very versatile and easily switches gears from soft and sweet to strong and clear. The Cocobolo is a wonderful set with perfect grain and gorgeous brown color. Being a German builder the German Spruce is of course perfect.

A beautifully preserved piece of history sits in your lap, and what else could you want? It’s one of the only of its kind, bedecked with pearl and brass and rosewood, Figured Maple back and sides, Spruce top—the 1945 Stromberg Ultra Deluxe. Grover sta-tite tuners, original pickguard, and wrapped up in the original velvet-lined hardshell case, this is an all-original example of one of the early-to-mid 1900s archtop builders work at the peak of their powers.
Elmer Stromberg worked to keep his instruments in the hands of players during the Great Depression fo the 1930s, and during this time evolved his archtops to better compete with a full orchestra by widening the lower bout to a full 17 3/8”, enhancing the volume of this Ultra Deluxe and lending an extra cutting ‘oomph’ to the trebles. The slim neck and narrow nut (1 11/16”) make for a deft left-hand work, and the setup is in a tasty sweet spot for both solos and rhythm.
It is an inspiration just to see an all-original vintage instrument of such rare provenance in person, but this Stromberg follows up that with the seasoned voice of a well-preserved and eminently playable piece of history.Other keywords: jazz, arch top, flatpick, jazz guitar, birdseye maple, mop, f holes, f-holes

A modern rendition of a vintage classic. We’re stoked to have this powerhouse D-18 from Japanese luthier Hiroshi Suda—Honduran Mahogany with Adirondack Spruce, 18-style appointments, and an immediately vibrant and expressive voice. What’s not to like? The neck profile is just a touch fuller than average, which totally fits the vintage inspiration, and the overall build weight is a svelte 4lbs 3oz, making this 2016 Suda D-18 exceedingly comfortable to play. It’s incredible to hear how wide open the Adi top sounds after just a few years, and we can only imagine the heights its bound for in the future.
